Cyborg is a classic. I first watched Cyborg in 2004 and I loved it. At the time, I didn't know it was originally going to be the sequel to Masters of the Universe and that writer and director Albert Pyun rewrote the script and turned it into "Cyborg". With the budget, I think Albert Pyun made the best movie he could. Jean-Claude Van Damme, although some of his acting was good in the movie was a good choice for the main protagonist Gibson. The action and fight sequences had good choreography. The movie had a good pacing. The soundtrack was good. The movie had some good sets and costumes. The supporting cast - Deborah Richter had chemistry with Jean-Claude Van Damme. Vincent Klyn, although his acting wasn't fantastic, he is a real badass as the main antagonist Fender. I watched Slinger, the director's cut and I can see why a lot of scenes were cut. Some scenes could had been kept in. Cyborg is very much a futuristic western and it does have a lot of elements. The Pirates are a gang of outlaws. Gibson is like the lone gunslinger. The movie's ending which Gibson rejects staying with Pearl and the scientists in Atlanta and deciding to move on. Cyborg is a classic and personally, I think it's Van Damme's best. One of the best action movies of the 1980s. If you love Mad Max. The Terminator. Conan the Barbarian and Jean-Claude Van Damme movies, I highly recommend Cyborg. A 90-minute post-apocalyptic thrill ride.
As a Van Damme fan, who is not a fan of cyborg or Albert Pyun, this is perfect for me. I get all of this insight and insider information. I am about a quarter through the commentary and I’m enjoying this more than I ever enjoyed watching the actual film. Have you guys seen American Cyborg? The most Albert Pyun film, Pyun never made.
Been listening to bits and pieces of this so far since I’m not at home. Great so far, mates! You and Rob are a simpatico pair. As a fan of Van Damme and the cheapie Cannon gritty action genre, "Cyborg" holds a special place in my heart. The visuals, balance of action and martial arts, and Van Damme's iconic performance all resonate with my love for '80s action cinema. It’s a nostalgic piece of pop art that I can always return to.
I'm watching it now and there is are some great looking sets and such but as for "Van Damme's iconic performance" he seems iconicly coked to the gills.
Loved it ! 👌 (Would be even greater if there would be a simple ''00:00:00'' counter on the bottom once YOU pressed play, that way we'd start synchronized and even could skip to certain timeframes)
I'm of the generation who saw Cyborg on video (thanks to my older brother) and to this day Fender terrifies me. There's just something about his look, his eyes and more. I will always enjoy this film. One thing I will pick up on from the commentary : the little girl was never meant to be able to countermeasure the weight of the people in the well. It was Fender just being evil, hurting the girl and even making it seem like it was her fault.
Yes -Ralf Moeller played Conan in the 'Conan: The Barbarian' TV series and Daniel Bernhardt played the Van Damme role in the Bloodsport sequels not to mention John WIck and Matrix Revolutions of course among others. He also modelled with Van Damme way back in the day.
Never will be a bad film? Imagine only having a handful of weeks witha limited budget and hella stupid shit behind the scenes to happen, right? The movie still manages to kill it in the box office, becomes a cult classic even when they had to edit the story several times, and manages to be legendary regardless of the lack of manpower to become what it was originally supposed to be. If thats a bad movie then all of these other movies over the years that had time and still became garbage need to be taken off the shelves.
Shelton Lettiech in my opinion made made Van Damme's career. I feel feel is a great filmmaker whom had a great storytelling techniques. He also made Bloodsport and Cyborg. Even Albert Pyun was underrated. This film and Nemesis could easily be like what if The Matrix was made without CGI.
Ah sorry Gavin, i've left it too late to cover it, coverage on new films have a short window. Im currently editing a feature film so i've missed some new movies to review. I did see Oppenheimer and very much enjoyed it, a bit too long though. It did have a cracking score.
Fact. Van Damme had to fix this movie, and changed the music. The original had rock punk music ☝️ It was called Slinger. Thank goodness Van Damme fixed the movie and soundtrack
The effects in this film.....wow they were bad. When Pearl removes her wig, and looks at Fender and his gang in the alley....wtf, then the "surgery" scene. God love them, they tried, and they were using practical effects, but so bad. Considering the production issues, I can kind of understand though.
I read that Klyn (Fender) was dubbed by by someone else. There are a couple of videos on UA-cam of Klyn and he doesn't sound anything like the voice in Cyborg. So I guess you can blame that other guy for the bad acting but I always thought that was a cool voice.
Actually, I tried looking it up and couldnt find the "actor" that did the voice-over. So, I tried asking A.I. and allegedly they just took Vincent Klyn's voice then they made it deeper. Thats what A.I said at least
me and my dad were in the store and I bought Death warrant. My Dad allowed a 10 year old to choose the movie. I chose Death Warrant (I think) AND THEN AS WE WERE LEAVING i saw a 3 pack of van damme. It had BloodSport, Death Warrent and something else. I wanted that shit. We returned it and I got it.Van fucking Damme.
Special: Albert Pyun and even these guys are jealous of Van Damme. No English man Or Asian man is good enough to do Gibson at all. This movie was a gift from Christ God to Van Damme. No one is good enough to play Gibson's Character. This character was made for Van Damme only. Sept. 2023. USA.
Oliver and Rob is a perfect duo, this made my day! :)
Despite not being based on one, in many ways this is the best representation of the old arcade beat-em up games in movie form.
a lot of post apocalyptic movies are tho
Wrong

I would love to hear you and Rob talk about Albert Pyun's Nemesis! You guys are great together I love these commentaries.
grew up loving this movie as a kid. I wanted his knife shoes so bad.
That movie is a hidden gem...
This movie is trash.
not really 😅
Great job guys. Loved this.

For those that don’t know, Rob’s stuff is REALLY great! The “Knockoff” series is ridiculously informative and funny as hell!
My favorite Van Damme movie ! Fender freaked me out as a kid.

This movie is solely responsible for my obsession with post apocalyptic movies/stories.

That scene has lived in my mind my whole life. I think it's such a perfect set piece to showcase how evil the bad guy is.
the film Cyborg (1989) was very much inspired by the film Upon a Time in the West (1968). Fantastic movies.

Omg
Oliver don't disappoint
If this man made a list of movies to put back 8n theater, the world would come together with peace and harmony
@21:00 dosent sound fishy tbh, Van Damme sounds like he deserved to be sued
I would LOVE a retrospective on Killer Klowns one day!
This is a bad movie? That is news to me. Love this thing.

Any chance you could bring these videos to UA-cam?

I have always heard that the Hitman starring chuck Norris was the last cannon release? Am i on the right track?
This commentary flew by. Thank you.
Hey Oliver, when it comes to Van Damme films, would you consider doing a retrospective on The Legionnaire?
btw did you thought about makig review of "Eight Legged Freaks"?
Cyborg is maybe my favorite JCVD movie. Caught my imagination as a kid and never lost it.
Damn still no Oppenheimer review
