... additionally, since the demise of the electric milk-float used for door-to-door milk deliveries in the UK, adapted versions of these could easily provide the near silence required to make the service's early-morning drops effective and acceptable again, helping to regrow the industry. The German postal service even developed their one electric cars for exactly that reason - and they're working brilliantly!
Drove a VITO during my move, several hundred km of driving around a big city and out on the country side. Lovely cars even though the one thing you need to get used to is the short cludge... it was a Diesel with manual transmition and it was the only car in my whole life I ever scotched more than once ^^'
I am in the U.S. South Carolina. I just bought a 4cyl turbo model. (gasoline) LOVE IT. I am sure the bat. life will improve in future models. This van should be great for city and residential deliveries. If you are going to spend a whole workday in a van you need more range than this model currently offers.

I'm looking for a latter-day VW e-van. It doesn't have to be a VW, of course (maybe better if it's not!), but it should be high quality and also economical. Ideally, it would have a range of at least 200 miles, more of course being better. I would be looking for something big enough to take something 48" wide (e.g. a sheet of plywood) in the back (even if I may need to leave the door ajar to carry it - need not worry about exhaust fumes), and would be looking for simple, conservative styling (actually, I DO want it to look like a box)! I think it's silly to pretend that a box is really a stylish coupe! What I want is a cleanly designed, good-looking VAN.
Aaah yes. These are more appealing to me than any other sports car.
They could use the top of the vans as solar chargers, while driving during the day in traffic.
Jolly John Would be interested to see the calculations on this. Unlikely the solar would be enough on its own, based just on what Musk said about fitting solar to a Tesla, but given the bigger roof space you'd think adding solar would give a noticeable boost in range at least.

No real benefit for this, except for help in keeping the climate in the cabin with less energy cons from batteries. Look for Bjorn Nyland's calculation in this topic.
Sun shines at a power of about 1 kW per square meter. If you have good panels, you may get 20 - 25 % of that power in a perfect day, so 200 - 250 Watts per square meter. Because the charging is not 100% efficient either, you get less, so you get maybe 160 Watts per square meter. Area of the roof in vito is about 1,8 x 3,75 m, so with that area of panels you would get about 1 kW of charging power. With that power it would take 42 hours of good sunshine to charge the Vito's 42kWh battery. If you have that good sunshine 5 hours a day, it will take about 9 days to charge the battery. It is not exactly bad actually, as these vans have so much roof area and quite small batteries, but doesn't extend the range much either while driving . . . For a car like Tesla, these numbers are a lot worse, because of bigger battery, and smaller roof area.
@@wopmf4345FxFDxdGaa20 You forgot to factor in the extra weight of the solar panels which increases the amount of energy you need as you make the whole vehicle heavier. Thats why nobody does it
My future van is an electric van with 600 miles range, self driving and self refill. I will retrofit the van to live in it. And when I am not living in it, I will let it go pick up people and/or products to deliver to others to make money.
then you have to go fuel cell wise , mate ... as a matter of fact , Mercedes has brought a Sprinter based model , with 600 km range ( with 7,5 kg of Hydrogen )
tanking takes some 3 minutes ... since it has no battery pack ( less weight, bigger range, better performance, less expensive to produce, less problems by recycling of the old battery ...).
Mercedes officials haven't made any statement yet, when it' going to hit the market, and the cost to the public ... we are anxious !

@Jolly John not while driving but while parked. Commercial vans are often sitting in the sun doing nothing at the shop or work site.

They should made a hybrid. Diesel/Gas engine to run front wheels with gas tank on left/right and a motor for rear-wheel with battery pack on the left/right
So weight distribution would be perfectly balance, you dont run out option one of the other in worst situation and still can get good performance either in road or 4x4
8:47 I argue that those electric vehicles are actually a lot easier to maintain. Think about it; almost no fluids, no turbos, no air intake, no exaust etc.

I’m waiting for the electric sprinter in the US. With 400 mile range it would be a dream.
I love EV's and golf-carts. And vans too. The Vito van is quite nice (and expensive). But BS about the ergonomic front. Some BS on range: "...for the vast majority of customers... 150 km makes this a very viable prospect for a business". BS, surely, at 25:20: what vans have small mirrors?? And at 34:50 Brian BS's the Merc man by saying: "...I think they're extraordinary!" Eh? Anyway, even the 2014 Nissan e-NV200 has a 170 km NEDC range, and up to 180 miles on WLTP.
We like our Zoe (mostly!). But are thinking of changing to an e-NV200 combi - they've been around for a while, and they have nice controls, and a more interesting digital dash display than that eVito! Like you johnny, I don't see why Brian gets so wound up by that eVito - unless it was the free lunch!
Great video. Many companies has a pool of shared cars, and if they are servicing customers i city centers, some of these vans could be EV´s. You will then also get the advantage of free parking while charging(in many cities)

Bearing in mind the size of these vans, I do not understand why the range is so poor. The flat floor could be made a little higher to bring a significant change in range. 60 miles or so can’t be much use to many people?

Only suitable for last mile type deliveries or a local business. The range seriously limits these and the lack of fast charging is a big deal. That and being a Mercedes they will be priced above the competitors

If logistics companies really understand range, then these vans may not need bigger batteries at all....BUT i fail to see why they don't at least give you the option to get a 100-120kWh battery, matching at least the short range (55kWh = 215miles) Tesla Model 3 ...
Kárpát Zoltán Because then it would be stupid heavy and the total payload decreases. With the additional battery weight they'll even need additional strengthening of the chassis making it even more heavy. Wouldn't work.
You may be right ... but the Model 3 80kWh battery pack (with inverters and chargers) is only 450kg ... I doubt these 40kWh batteries weigh significantly less.
Kárpát Zoltán It is still too heavy. A modern diesel engine weighs about 100kg. Now having all those batteries will make it carry 350kg less. I don't know but I think electric vehciles are just not yet good enough to replace petrol or diesel. Batteries are too heavy and take too long to charge. We need something better.
SDav21 Tesla Model 3 costs 18000 usd in materials and 10000 usd in labor. 310 mile range and 100 mile charge in 10 minutes. Unfortunately other manufacturers use inferior battery tech and much slower charging..

Kárpát Zoltán Not quite. The Jaguar ipace doesn't charge slowly and has great range. Same will be for the cars coming from the other luxury carmakers.
150km max????? this means that effective working radius is not more than 30km absolute max and you have to fit it in one day since recharging is so slow. I'd understand 150km range and some supercharging capability which takes range up to 80% in 30 mins... it's as stupid as mitshubishi miev was when it first came out, no serious business owner will buy these vans. So much unused realestate underneath and they only put in 150km worth batterys... Basic Tesla x with no passanger seats and with trailer might be better ROI than vito :D :D

Yes indeed. 100-150 km range is enough to pick up a crew, and back to the base. The electric van shall be the perfect vehicle for city courier, but not with half range needed.
Yeah but no one buys 50k+++ € vito with 150km range even if they need to recharge it once a week, there are 2x cheaper vans available which have 1000km range just IF and big IF you need it. Those MB vans should be plugin hybrids with that range and price.
130rapid businesses decide by total cost of ownership and not just sticker price.
It's a pity the Vito Mixto isn't available in eVito form.

This van does really look promising to cut down on city air pollution and noice.
Why no fast charge option?
130kms on a full charge. That's about 80 miles. I drive between 300 and 400 miles a day in my sprinter

Are any European EMS services using the E-Sprinter as an ambulance yet? If they're out that is. I'm an EMT in the US and while the range on those is a little poor I could see a use for the E-Sprinter as a Type II ambulance platform.
By fuel cell I assume he means hydrogen? Would like to finally see this technology take off. It's been dormant for over 100 years just like electric cars had been so fingers crossed it takes off this time. But how would it be refuelled, and would this refuelling be available to small businesses and motorhome owners?

Are the larger sprinters electric as well? Can the 3500 170 wheelbase dually super high top extended long cab be electric with option of the fuel cell? Are these eSprinters available in the U.S.?
Can I confirm that the rapid charging is available on the eSprinter and not the eVito? I was hoping it was on both but I can't find anything that says the eVito also has the 50kW DC CCS

Do they use ultracapacitors for storing recuperated energy (help keeping batteries stay healthy longer), if not, any plan to integrate them in short term?

A fuel cell makes a lot of sense for commercial vehicles. The problem for commercial vehicles is that you just can't add batteries and batteries until you get more range. Because that makes it so heavy that the payload then drastically decreases then making it pointless. So this is great however, making it a fuel cell will be ideal especially for long haul heavy duty trucks.
SDav21 fuel cell van is never going to work, he said you get Sprinter with 53kw battery for 150km
why not have 120kw battery for easy 300km with supercharger option???

Marti LPG Read my comment. Adding more batteries just makes it heavier which decreases the overall weight it can carry. It then defeats the purpose of being a van that can carry things.

fuel cell technology seems not an option right now for vehicles. it requires rare metals to produce (with limited stock so prices growing quickly), not durable enough for long term usage, etc. New technology and solutions should be developed so costs are huge. I wouldn't wait any viable solution soon according to the news in this topic

theyre both not purpose built electric vehicles and will most likely be used in public applications that dont require that much range
highly doupt that, usually local deliveries who need no more than 150km range do not need vito... they are perfectly fine with marginally smaller vans that cost 3x less.
You can buy 3 nissan NV200 vans and pay for 5+ years running costs for the price of 150km range vito
also there are e-NV200 Evalia which has up to 300km range, and costs less than vito... 50k€ vs 41k€
