- David Hettel and Chris Tyler left Florida on a mission to surf and explore Guanacaste, Costa Rica in 1981. What they found was a vibrant rain forest leading to an isolated coastline with perfect, desolate waves quietly peeling off.

Loved this old footage, brought back a lot of memories. I especially want to thank you for the Caldera footage. I forgot the name of that break..one time when the shore break was too big at Playa Hermosa , I decided to drive up to Boca Barranca but on the way saw this amazing left off a jetty. Had no idea where I was or anything about this break. I paddled out alone and had an amazing surf session. The only thing was the water smelled like gasoline and stung my eyes. Probably from the nearby refinery/ship yard. I swear if I lit a match the ocean would have been ablaze!

Awesome memories, but at the time we listen to T-sol , or whatever old 8track from the bands from Herbie's wave warriors vids that came later on , absolutely some The police and Pink Floyd 🤙🏼🇨🇷💯

My first trip to CR about 18 mos later. Myself and 3 buddies the only surfers in Tamarindo at the time.

@Heavymetalhettel Don't recall the names but there were 2 guys that supposedly had a charter boat biz (Tamarindo). Used a Big Boston Whaler. Went back the following year and they were gone. Rumor was they were USA feds (CIA?) as the Iran/Contra thing was going on up the coast.
yes that's them. Warren continued ti be a captain in Tamarindo and Louis built the hotel at playa Grande and cleverly helped get the government to ban any further building and declare the beach at Grande a turtle sanctuary.@@alcurry5669
We bought gas for the rented Toyota in Nosara from a guy that rolled out a 50 gallon drum of unfiltered gas. Lucky our surf guide was a mechanic because before we hit the soccer field our gas pump line was clogged. Incredible free diving at South end of Giones, endless Langosta for a song and a dance.

Pretty much the only empty waves of that quality these days are going to be really, really cold...
A lot of empty tropical waves out here to be enjoyed on the daily...and usually just around the corner from the popular spots 😉
When we hung at your( supposed) place wasnt until mid late 2000’s. We stayed at a hotel that was a treehouse?
Im watching this from Guanacaste.... crowded peaks, everyone surfs now in CR and everyone knows about CR. Tamarindo, wont go near it. Its a clown show.
