If you're just using pipe with no fabric, how are the pipes not getting clogged in heavy soil? Or with light soil, how are you not washing soil away?

EdgeSanity13 the pipe has small perforations that allow the water to seep into it. Typically tile is not used in light soil either.

@@ben20197 So the reason I'm asking is because in a residential french drain, there is always fabric and gravel involved even though they usually use the same perforated piping. I have very heavy soil in my lawn. So I'm wondering about employing these drainage techniques at the residential level and whether farmers have established that fabric and gravel is unnecessary and we can adopt those lessons learned for very heavy soil in residential lawns.

@@Entertainment_Station_ES Yes you are right the gravel and fabric are unnecessary for farmers. This could be because tile is typically installed 3 feet or deeper. I don't have experience with residential french drains but they are probably not as deep, so the gravel and fabric may hold up the soil so it doesn't break the pipe. Definitely something to test out because you could save on the cost of the gravel and fabric.

We in India use gravel along with used coconut shells for this purpose.

Where you drain your tile lines is a big deal. What about following your States Drainage Laws? You can only legally drain your fields where the water would naturally drain. Not whatever is best or cheapest for the farmer. How about being respectful to your Neighbors and the Environment.
