I own a G3 "molar" as well, and I found it, at my local landfill! It was sitting in their dump house on a chair and I asked them if I could have it. They said SURE. And I was shaking as I put in the truck. I have also leaped off the truck into a pile of trash to get another Mac (at the same landfill) that turned out to be a complete Macintosh Color classic! Great video. I know the feeling when you strike gold like this. Too bad I can't find a Lisa that way!
Wow, some amazing finds! So glad they all were rescued and seemed to work! That iSight G5 is a rare one too, they only sold them for a few months and they go for a lot more than the early Intel and G5s go for online right now! It's amazing how many people just throw away perfectly usable technology just "because it's old".
I've always loved these machines. My fifth grade teacher had six of these in his room and he used the one with video output to show us multimedia content constantly. It's so funny that they only sold them for so brief a time because they really were great machines, not nearly as attractive as the iMac, but so much more capable and expandable. And yes those were some great CRTs, so awesome that all that one needed was a cable snapped back in.
Yo honestly I just stumbled upon this channel. I actually like it, it gets my attention and it’s not a boring channel, I’m glad to see there are people that like old apple items. I’m glad you found all those rare apple machines!
Oh my God, that Molar Mac! It is so unbelievable that it boots and works so well, after everything it has been through. That and the clone! Congratulations on these great finds, and thank you so much for sharing it with us.
18:38 Fun fact: View sonic CRTs are amazing because they are usually Trinitron tubes. Mitsubishi also made monitors using Trinitron tubes. View sonic, Sylvania (for 2 or 3 high end models), Mitsubishi and a couple other brands bought the tubes and built them into their own branded units, usually with some kind of licensing agreement with Sony so they could advertise the fact the TV's used Trinitron tube technology.
Is there any way I can add more than one 'like' to this video? What a great story, and what a fantastic find. Thank goodness you're out there saving these Macs Steve!
So I was in Middleschool from 2001 to 2003 and HS from 2003 to 2008, and these things were everywhere in the libraries and corners of classrooms. I had no idea they were rare because I saw them so often. ALSO HOLY CRAP THOSE 5500S WERE EVERYWHERE!
Harbor freight has an actually pretty nice rechargeable flashlight for $24 and Walmart has a rechargeable headlamp for $24. I’d highly suggest picking up one or both. The head lamp is so handy when working with small components, and everyone should have a working flashlight in their car.
The trash is the best place to get old computers and game systems. Rescued my G5, G4 graphite, Mac Pro, iMac G5, several Thinkpads, Xbox One, original Xbox, Xbox 360, etc. saves on ewaste and preserves a nice piece of history.
Glad I watch you, you just named 2 more Macs I had The 5200-75 and the LC-550! and I played with the Molar Mac at my school back then! Huge computer! our computer hunt reminds me of y many trips to my school district's computer warehouse! Where I live there are very few if any of these places to hunt down such rare items. I can't wait to see more of your videos on these finds! Your making my day on saving these gems!
I was the sixth grade when the G3 all in one was released. There is one in the the computer lab in our school and I remember our teacher talking about how fast it was. I really liked the way it looked with that weird translucent plastic on top.
You got the best eMac! Congratulations on finding so many working, delightful items! Reminds me of the time I found an iMac G3, 2 eMacs, and an iBook G3 on the same day at a similar event!
I came to watch your channel because of your skills, but will stay because you have to be the most lovable tech guy on the entirety of UA-cam!! I hope that your wife understands and doesn't mind sharing you with us!!! She must be really cool, too! Best to you both and to your continuing success here!
This was epic, and your storytelling kept me at the edge of my seat! No MacBook Pro’s there? Also, does your wife care how many Macs you bring home or do you keep them in the garage?
A few months late - but always awesome to see rare Macs get new love by being found. :) Particularly this model. Great work - really enjoying this video.
I"m sure I saw the Molar Mac smiling at you. In the Uk we never had that model for the school I worked in. We only had G3 iMacs and Later the G4 Emac but we didn't buy many.
I used to collect a bunch of vintage Apple computers, but stopped a few years ago. Now they are sitting at my place, but most are at my parents. There's just something about the old Apple hardware that is so appealing to me!
STEVE VERY INSPIRING VIDEO YOU CAPTURE HOW ALL OF US MAC COLLECTORS FEEL ABOUT OUR OWN MACS AND FINDING GOLD WHERE YOU LEAST THINK TO FIND IT, VERY ENJOYABLE TO WATCH I HAVE 3 POWER MACINTOSH G3 AIO’s ONE WAS A RESCUE FROM A SCHOOL AND A PILE OF AIO’s TO BE FIXED AND I WILL BE DOING THAT, FINDING THE CLONE MAC GOT ME AS EXITED AS YOU, BEAUTIFUL FIND MY FRIEND, I TRUELY DELIGHTED TO WATCH THIS VIDEO AND I HOPE THERE IS MORE TO COME!
I always loved these. My elementary school had these as well as the iMac G3s and Performa 5400s. All three of these made me fall in love with the Macs from that era.
So you ARE from Central Jersey. I guess you must be the one who beats me to half the local listings I miss haha! Keep up the great work! Maybe we will meet at a local flea market or festival once they are open again!
Wow. I remember my secondary school in the early 2000s having a computer lab *filled* with these G3 "Molar Macs". Loved the fact that it had a built in zip drive. One of them in our library was upgraded to run Mac OS 10.1. I wonder what happened to them .. I also used a number of Power Macintosh 5500s in elementary school into the millennium...
I've worked in public school IT for 20+ years. I think of the interesting stuff I've recycled over the years. We had 3 or 4 of those all in one G3s. One was tricked out with high-speed SCIS for video editing. Heavest most awkward machines ever. I wish I held on to a rev A iMac and a few other machines (I had a pile of Plus, SEs, and Classics we sent off when I first started). I did keep a few goodies over the years though just to take me back...
Just found mine! I remember vividly when my school (elementary) received their 2 units. I was so excited to see the boxes and got scolded to NOT touch them even though I was just looking at them 😂. The one I found today is completely embedded with Nicotine, i just started to clean it entirely, it’s already getting back in shape. Problem though is that there is no chime and video for now. No sign of accessing the HDD too… I’ll see if a battery change and PRAM reset will do the trick.
It’s a great feeling when these opportunities arise, it works out and we get lucky. Had a similar situation occur for me. A Roland JX-8P, posted 11 minutes before I saw it. Getting in my car and assuming somethings going to happen that will sour the deal. Fortunately for me, it was the will of god or my destiny, but I still have to keep reminding myself, I own a Roland JX-8P.
I just recently saved one of these a few weeks ago. I saw a listing on Craigslist for this and a heap of other vintage computers. And I mean literally a heap. I drove the 30 or so miles out to go get it. Loaded it up in my car. Left them the $10 for it. Now... I didn't get a chance to really look at it when until got home. This poor thing along with the other computers have been outside for who knows how long. EMI shields are rusted and shot. CD drive was impacted and made the carrier crack into 20 pieces. The delicate casing has been cracked on top in a few spots and the corners on the bottom have been hurt. It's stand was snapped off and missing. But I'm hopeful for it still. The logic board and it's audio personality card seem good. Though full of dust and dirt and spiders. Unsure about the CRT. I was trying to get the casing off following the Apple Service Source guide but it just won't come off. In any weird chance, would you have some tips? I really want to save this rare machine. It's an early one with a 4/98 date code.
Yeah but for every stand out like a Molar Mac or god forbid an SGI, you'll have dozens of E-Machines or other hohum PC clones. Although finding an eOne or a Wedge Packard Bell would be cool if in decent shape.
OK, not technically an "eMac" but that's what we called it before they came out with their own eMac. Congratulation on the wonderful finds. I love this stuff.
I've been there with the phone flashlight taking valuable power... I haven't regretted buying a slim (yet powerful) flashlight, which runs on AAAs or slim lithiums. Plus that way you can aim it without being tethered to the camera lens! I carry that thing everywhere. And I use it all the time, even indoors. It's just more convenient to pull out this little flashlight and click the button on the end, than to turn on the flashlight in my phone. Highly, highly recommend picking one up. You can get really solid metal ones for $20 or $30, which are usually waterproof and drop-proof to boot. If I'm going on a long drive or something, I can bring a few more low-self-discharge batteries along with me. Awesome monitor and clone finds by the way... holy crap. Some rather good monitors in that pile if they're fully functional. Decent colour accuracy etc etc. Nice BNC ports on that one particular one too. Lots of opportunities to harvest this pile, repair and then sell on, even if you're not interested in keeping some of these pieces... real good find.
Yes, I had a head-mounted light I could have brought, and a mini flashlight just sitting in my room I could have taken, d'oh! At least next time I'll remember. Yes, very happy that everything seems to work (so far).
That was a hell of a story! I know this is an old video, but still congrats! I used the Performa 5200 and the G3 Molar Mac in school. I even have a photo that my mother took of me in class with the G3 Molar in the background. Had no idea they were rare machines at the time haha. Only reason I’m here was because I grew up with Macs, then went to PC for 2 decades, and now expecting my new/old 2017 iMac sometime in the mail tomorrow hopefully. Thought it would be fun to go down the vintage rabbit hole. I’ll definitely be subscribing by the way!
23:03 This was SUPER COMMON on higher end prebuilts in the 90's. HATED IT. Have like 12 cases in my warehouse with that same type of front panel guarded sidepanels. PITA
Great video and Congrats! While I'm incredibly jelous of your score, I'm glad this stuff was able to get rescued!(Especially the molar Mac and the clone)
11:30 This is anecdotal, but a friend of one of my college professors who SAID he worked for apple told me they designed the PowerMac G3 AIO to be harder to steal. It was a heavy as it was, as big as it was, as bulky as it was, and as difficult to grip as it was by design. Also it was so ugly no one would want one at home. He emphasized that last bit a lot rofl. Completely anecdotal, cannot confirm, as its been 20 years since I had that conversation, but makes a whole lot of sense to me.
I enjoy my G3 AIO. Did yours have a Zip drive or the fake-out blanking cover? Anyway these are mostly the same as the DT and MT models except they can't use the DVD Personality Card; they require specific Personality Cards that have the AIO video connector and the DVD card (and most of the late production Personality Cards in general) lacks it. Sadly it also precludes the use of a PCI video card on the built-in screen unless you can hack together an interface cable for it.
Yes, mine was not configured with a Zip drive so it has a black plastic cover. Yes, some of the revisions of the personality cards do have the required RGB video socket so they won't work with the AIO model. I never had the DVD personality card, but I have a few other cards and some have the RGB socket (used for the AIO's monitor) and some don't.
I had a chance to buy one for about 80 bucks about 4 years ago. I very much regret not doing so, if I had known what it was I would have bought it. I think I mistook it for a printer (embarrassing, I know), I didn't notice the screen since I saw it from the back. It was at a large region famous rummage sale where screaming good deals are common, I got my Xbox HD AV pack for 5 bucks (worth 50+) there and my four Wavebird controllers for 15 bucks each along with 15 dollar Xbox 360 S consoles and even my 15 dollar launch model PS3 that I can't use because it still works.
I know of a recording studio that uses Macs only and the last time I was there they had tons of old models even one of these. Just sitting in storage in the garage.
Done this many times from ewaste places and abandoned sites! Screw the legality part of it! You're doing the old school PC world a favor :) This reminds me of when I found an old PS/2 IBM at a place I was exploring. Carried the CRT, PC, and Keyboard for a little over 1 mile to my car! My hands were dead. Back left the chat. But hey, I was happy as I could be.
Man this makes me feel pretty sad because I came across a G3 AIO that is still at my recycling center... unfortunately I had to choose between saving it, or saving a Macintosh TV. I chose the Macintosh TV because the G3 suffered some external damage and SEVERE rusting... maybe someone else will save it before it’s too late... but I’m glad you were able to save yours! (Edit: I actually did save the unit! Unfortunately despite my efforts to clean it up it didn’t work.)
Excellent find and story. I'm glad others see the charm in these particular models. Does anyone happen to have a source for the L-shaped power cable? It is the one thing my G3 AIO is lacking, and I have been unable to track one down... outside of the occasional overpriced eBay listing. Thanks in advance.
I often wondered if someone should make a warehouse for unwanted old tech. Drop off old junk for free, no disposal fees, and scavengers can browse and take them home cheap or something. Maybe an idea if someone has an old big box or something that's not open anymore laying around.
Glad it got saved. Would love to see a video on those Palm devices sometime. Too bad we don't get many ewaste events around here, I'd be happy to just find a Mac Mini.
Man, I cannot express how glad I am it was saved.
My elementary school had at least three dozen of the Molar Macs, among other beige glory. I love them!
LOVE THIS!
Yes sir
Yes sirrrrrr

Master Jeffreys,
I was not expecting you
You're doing the Lord's work, sir, saving classic Macs from being scrapped.

Is the 17 inch eyesight G5 rare I have one with a smashed LCD

Such a harrowing molar Mac tale! I was on the edge of my seat hoping you got the Molar! :) glad you got it!
as a collector of PowerPC Macs I am very glad to have found your channel. Now I'll binge all your content

Incredible story - was on the edge of my seat! Congrats on the amazing finds man, glad this stuff was saved from e-waste!
I found one of these Molar Macs at a scrapper. Didn't want to sell it to me, told him I buy it or I break in later and steal it. Cost me $50... lol
I can’t believe how many awesome items were at that e-recycling spot!! I wish I had a similar spot near me with anything decent
The trash is the best place to get old computers and game systems. Rescued my G5, G4 graphite, Mac Pro, iMac G5, several Thinkpads, Xbox One, original Xbox, Xbox 360, etc. saves on ewaste and preserves a nice piece of history.
That was an awesome road trip and find! the clones can really be fun! I have a clone made by Radius... it is simply gorgeous.
I'm so happy for your shelf that will hold this old computer while it further ages. Congrats!
Glad I watch you, you just named 2 more Macs I had The 5200-75 and the LC-550! and I played with the Molar Mac at my school back then! I have a lot of nostalgia around the molar macs. My middle school had an entire lab of them.
Why yes officer. This is my mac, mac clone and other piles of ****. :) Great save
I do exactly what you do, man. From one Apple geek to another, thank you for doing what you do. I feel like we could be good friends in another life.
Hooray! I love a story with multiple happy endings - fantastic work on this rescue mission!
I was the sixth grade when the G3 all in one was released. There is one in the the computer lab in our school and I remember our teacher talking about how fast it was. I really liked the way it looked with that weird translucent plastic on top.
What an incredible haul! Persistence pays off!
Unbelievable epic haul! Wow!!!
I had four of these in the mid-2000s. Wish i still did. Got them from a local school.
I think the last time I saw one it was during a trade show. Haven't seen one in person ever since. I'm glad it was rescued!!!!!
You got the best eMac! Congratulations on finding so many working, delightful items! Reminds me of the time I found an iMac G3, 2 eMacs, and an iBook G3 on the same day at a similar event!

I have an Australian sold Power Macintosh 5500 that is Black with 'Director's Edition' stamp on it in storage - love it to bits. :)

What an epic tale! One the way to getting mine in another state, I dented my 1 week old new truck, but I felt content after getting the G3 AIO home.
Fun video man, thank you for putting it together. Nice to see someone else geek out about this stuff. 8 )
So you ARE from Central Jersey. I guess you must be the one who beats me to half the local listings I miss haha! Keep up the great work! Maybe we will meet at a local flea market or festival once they are open again!
Hah! I’m not too far away from there! There’s always plenty of stuff to go around, I haven’t been out looking in ages. I miss it 🤓
Amazing story telling :) Enjoyed it very much !!

It’s a great feeling when these opportunities arise, it works out and we get lucky. Had a similar situation occur for me. A Roland JX-8P, posted 11 minutes before I saw it. I was trying to get the casing off following the Apple Service Source guide but it just won't come off.
In any weird chance, would you have some tips? I really want to save this rare machine. It's an early one with a 4/98 date code.
E waste is so annoying people just dump cool old computers.
Well at least it's better to recycle it than have it just be thrown in a landfill. They are cool tho!
Yeah but for every stand out like a Molar Mac or god forbid an SGI, you'll have dozens of E-Machines or other hohum PC clones. Although finding an eOne or a Wedge Packard Bell would be cool if in decent shape.
An eMac!! I haven't seen one of these since they first came out.
I love how the description says “...could I race against time and rescue this Mac?” like if this video would exist if you couldn’t
Power Macintosh G3 All-In-One, is the best mac of all time, hands down ;)
Wow, what a sweet score!!
I had the Performa 575. Then a PowerMac 6100 with G3 upgrade card. Would have drooled over this machine at the time.
This is awesome! I would grab everything I could possible take!
23:03 This was SUPER COMMON on higher end prebuilts in the 90's. HATED IT. Have like 12 cases in my warehouse with that same type of front panel guarded sidepanels. PITA
I'm so jealous! In the USA you can find incredible things.
Wow you are very lucky good job finding all those computers!!!

A great story - thanks for sharing!

Completely anecdotal, cannot confirm, as its been 20 years since I had that conversation, but makes a whole lot of sense to me.
glad you saved all this tech.
keep and use it, or sell it for others to enjoy!
I could feel the excitement in this video! I would have grabbed a few of those Compaqs too but I know a car only has so much room 🤣
I saw a TRS-80 that you left behind.....
Also that taking off the front plate to access the sides was common in Compaqs of that era.
I had a chance to buy one for about 80 bucks about 4 years ago. I very much regret not doing so, if I had known what it was I would have bought it. I think I mistook it for a printer (embarrassing, I know), I didn't notice the screen since I saw it from the back. You finally got one! Congrats Steve!
Done this many times from ewaste places and abandoned sites! Screw the legality part of it! You're doing the old school PC world a favor :)
This reminds me of when I found an old PS/2 IBM at a place I was exploring. Carried the CRT, PC, and Keyboard for a little over 1 mile to my car! My hands were dead. Back left the chat. But hey, I was happy as I could be.
Get yourself an external USB battery mate. As someone who does a lot of traveling it's a must.
A new place for cruising other nerds :-D. Loved the video! Ciao from Italy!
Congrats on your finds. Such a great storyteller as well!
Thank you! :-)
That was some good storytelling.
so many crazy finds.
man that was a crazy trip
Now those are some awesome saves! Would have been a major shame if it didn't go home with you!
My highschool had a ton of these that were eventually replaced with red and blue dvd imacs then emacs
We had several computer labs at my university filled with these. I always loved that machine though the zip drives on them went bad so fast.
I still beat myself once in a while thinking about this Commodore PET I walked passed on a mountain of junk back in 2011.
Oh, man! That's one heck of a haul, dude!
I have two of these in my garage - one missing a motherboard - and haven't yet been able to get a working unit together yet.
I saw this on the LEM Facebook page. Good work
I often wondered if someone should make a warehouse for unwanted old tech. Drop off old junk for free, no disposal fees, and scavengers can browse and take them home cheap or something. Maybe an idea if someone has an old big box or something that's not open anymore laying around.
Gosh I need to find some eWaste
Great story. Thanks!

That almost looked like an Apple II at 8:57. On second look, maybe just a beige word processor.
I’m shocked that computer stayed up there that long that someone else didn’t grab it first that’s a heck of a haul
Glad it got saved. Would love to see a video on those Palm devices sometime. Too bad we don't get many ewaste events around here, I'd be happy to just find a Mac Mini.
Awesome finds!
Haha this is so amazing! What a great story :) I have a viewsonic p220f that thing is heavy!
