Best Websites
Odan.org (Opus Dei Awareness Network)
Best English language website about Opus Dei.
Opuslibros.org
Most comprehensive source for accurate information about Opus Dei. Includes many testimonies from former members. The “Correspondence,” “Your Writings,” and “Vocation Trap” sections are the most useful. It is a Spanish language website. However, by right-clicking and choosing “Translate to English,” Google provides a decent although imperfect translation.
Best Books
Beyond the Threshold: A Life in Opus Dei , by Maria del Carmen Tapia.
The book Opus Dei hates more than any other. Ms. Tapia simply recounts her experiences of Opus Dei and Josemaria Escriva. The problem with this book, for Opus Dei, is that Ms. Tapia paints a picture of Josemaria Escriva which is very much at odds with the false hagiographies it pushes. And her writing is eminently believable. This book may be out of print, but used copies are generally available on Amazon.
Saints & Schemers: Opus Dei and Its Paradoxes , Joan Estruch.
1994 Oxford University Press book that traces the many contradictions in Opus Dei’s telling of its early history. Out of print, but available used on Amazon.
Opus Dei as Divine Revelation: Analysis of Its Theology and Its Consequences in Its History and People , E.B.E.
Former South American member of Opus Dei provides an accurate understanding of how Opus Dei sees itself. This book may be of interest principally to former members of Opus Dei. For anyone looking for a deep dive.
NOT RECOMMENDED
Opus Dei: An Objective Look Behind the Myths and Reality of the Most Controversial Force in the Catholic Church , John Allen, Jr.
John Allen is an excellent journalist. Unfortunately, he widely missed the mark in this book. Kudos to the Opus Dei PR team for dodging a bullet!
Anything approved of or promoted by Opus Dei or its members
These works are pure hagiographies and do not even mention (let alone explain or contextualize) Josemaria Escriva’s many and serious defects. The histories of Opus Dei written by Opus Dei members or sympathizers omit so many important details that they can only be described as materially false.
Well in my “centro de estudios” we were 5 girls. Now every one of us left.
Ex-numerary here. I agree with you. I don't have stats but 70-90% sound right. Opus Dei will be able to produce stats but never will release them. I remember when I was in OD a rabid Spanish numerary insisting to a non member that very few left. He had been trained to repeat that as a mantra. Poor guy.
Thank you very much for your chanel and this video!
How fun to see you dude. Great work!
Thanks, man! I have no idea who you are, but I love you!
@@nopusdei Yeah you got charisma
I left the faith for a number of years after a combination of factors that included abuses in/around Opus Dei. I wasn't even in it but people around me were and it was alarming. I thought if that was what being 'faithful' was it wasn't right or ok.
70-90%!!!!! WOW. Didn't knew that!
Thanks for your presentation
Thanks for sharing your experiences, findings, and knowledge about opus dei. There isn’t enough information in English. The vast wealth of knowledge in Opuslibros, as you said, is in Spanish. Translation apps are very useful, but more needs to be explained in English about the assistant numeraries (numerarias auxiliares) and their plight. If you want please get in touch with me.
I did a video about the numerary assistants with the little I know. You can watch it here. ua-cam.com/video/ETFAFfPkGpQ/v-deo.html Unfortunately, I can't dedicate more time to this project. Thanks for your comment!
Hi Gianfranco, how can I get in touch with you? I would like to know of their current situation and what Spanish Catholics think of this sect.
In the 1980s a priest told me he saw the figures for the Archdiocese of Manila, and it was over 50%. At that time we were taught that if you left Opus Dei, you were going to hell. I don't believe many members believe that anymore, so I'm sure that figure has gone up. Around 1990 I asked a Trappist monk at Saint Joseph's Abbey, MA what percentage left. He said over 90%. A Philippine Jesuit told me that one year 32 started out and years later 7 made it to the priesthood. He thought it was one of their best years. 78% attrition rate.
Hey man, I've watched just about every single video you've shared, and all I can say is "bravo"! I sincerely hope you don't stop talking about this, because it's important and although reporters and journalists can talk about this till we're blue in the face, hearing it from someone who actually LIVED it is huge. Vaya con Dios, and if you ever want to collaborate, just say the word.
Thanks! Sorry for my delay replying. I don't really stay on top of comments. I appreciate YOU and your videos as well as your Reddit group!
@nopusdei no worries at all- we all have lives to live! And thank you much, I take your appreciation as high praise. Keep well!🙏🏼
I was a member and can confirm all of what these videos are saying is accurate, however I did not know about the documentation of members spiritual secrets in a file. I would add that for the young men, 16, or 17 who join - they are, yes, inexperienced and also find something there which they lack at home, probably the fatherly kindness of directors and the priest who put on a huge show if you are noted as a good recruit to join, as I was... only now as a more mature person can I understand that this is a form of emotional manipulation, rather than a free choice... To parents: if your children are attending the boys club, this is not a free service, the 3 years your son will be there will be followed by weekly talks "circles" and, if they have good grades at school, they will be invited on seemingly innocent study camps and other activities and then they will be pressured to join... It's very black and white - ask yourself, why would the organisation be giving your son all this help and time if there was no something they want back? Ask yourself: do you think this organisation wants new members, and young members? the answer is obviously:yes...
I would not publicly make an intervention on this unless there was a grave problem in the organisation itself, as there is now with the current crisis in the Church, the errors coming from the top, which are damaging and Opus Dei is defending this, making excuses, attacking those who follow Cannon 212 of the Chatechism, which is about a catholics right AND DUTY to publicly criticise error at any level of the Church... (take for example the synod on synodality as one example)... Opus Dei are actively using their position to attack those who defend the Faith and support those who destroy it... Just as St Escriva would have done in the 1920s, and thats exactly the point (St Escria never had to deal with a situation like we have today and so the organisation is headless.)- anyone who wakes up to this problem is KICKED OUT as I will now explain...
Fr Jesusmary from Africa was kicked out of Opus Dei about 2 years ago for doing what he must and correctlng, publicly, Bergoglio... Cannon 212.. (you can look this up online, lifesite news and others).
and so for all of their posturing and quotations of cannons, and early CHurch fathers, Opus Dei are truely full of contradictions - and I say this as one who came from their formation... This correction to them is now public... (Mathew 18:15-17)
I don't wish to go no too much more other than to make one more observaion: Diabolic disorientation... The observations you will see from former members point to a spiritual sickness and this can be understood as a subtle demonic influence, the spirit of Pride... Fr Rippiger says that this spirit can even infest catholic orders in general and this jumped out at me, when he said that as it relates to Opus Dei - it is a general spirit over an entire community - and it is therefore contagious from one to another... once you, as an organisation, see yoursef as better than others, with a superior formation and dedication this is an open door to demonic influence,,, and what we see now is that Opus Dei has publicly backed heretical leadership in the church and they will not back down easily as this would require a degree of humility, and satan is incapable of any act of humility... Secondly, admitting to what they have done in supporting hirectical leadership would involve taking a degree of responsible for the scandal they have caused and this is an admition to guilt, which is painful, and therefore they will not make such a confession... this could be likened to the curse of those who crusified Our Lord and cried out "may His Blood be upon us and our children"... Those who understand this will know...
It is said "it is your vocation" and you do not doubt or question this.
These videos are really important, especially for the ex numerary assistants who have recently spoken out. We’d be curious to see a new video to see what backlash you have received since coming forward. Your testimony is unique because you have put your face to it.
Thanks for your comment! I haven't received any real backlash. Sometimes people leave judgmental comments, but I don't worry about that. I used to erase those comments, but now I just don't care. I don't even remember the login for my channel, so I can't manage comments anyway. Opus Dei doesn't have any real power, at least in the U.S.. All members of Opus Dei can do to me is to judge me and perhaps say nasty things about me behind closed doors. I can handle people saying nasty things about me. I just don't care.
What should we make of Opus Dei preparatory and secondary independent schools that have opened near us? Next to our parish church as convent school closed due to debts …
