As a jeweler I use a set up like this nearly every day. A few tips I have learned throughout the years 1. Find something comfortable to set your hands/wrist on to help brace yourself. 2. Use the lowest magnification that you can, and train yourself to increase it only when you absolutely need it. This helps with eye strain and will speed you up a bit. 3. Pay attention to your breathing. When you are working with a microscope your breathing can mess you up. Slow controlled breathing is the key. 4.Remeber that most mistakes can be fixed. Very few mistakes are visible to the naked eye so don't worry about making a few. Keep up the great work man ! If you ever make your way to the US hit me up! I'll let you try with one of my Jeweler scopes! You'll be able to paint the pupils on a face then lol
Hi - Good advice there. I am building models and I already got a 3.5X magnifying glasses. But Iøve seen these glasses with objectives on them. I think they are called head loupes, and they magnify around 20-30X. Are they worth it? Do they provide depth perception?
@@esbenrasmussen4289 I use a headloup some days. but I tend to stay under 10x with it. Anything higher your depth perception can make your eyes go googly lol. I do have a flip down lens on my headband that allows up to 30x for me to see a bit better for a minute or two.
Painting using magnification is a lot like target shooting or archery: never pull the trigger, release an arrow, make a brush stroke on an inhale or when holding one's breath, always at the tail end of an exhale.
But if he has the right tool for the task and not just something similar he'll get better a lot faster. Mini painting requires depth perception. He needs stereo magnification: a stereo microscope or binocular loupes.

Seems like the ideal way for you to use this tool, would be to flesh out everything first, like you normally do, and then use the tool to really get in and do the super fine details Awesome video!!!
So in retrospect, i don't think i've ever tried a tool that made it so much more difficult to paint. It was quite disheartening, especially at first since it was a big set back in how my end results normally look. The final one looked better, but it was still a step back from what i normally do imho. Whats your take away?
If I may interject as a fellow artist, I think you'll find a lot more success using this tool if you utilize it as a refinement step after your normal way of painting. Wouldn't rely on it from start to finish, because you end up wasting a lot of time in the beginning worrying about detail before you even have a good base.
I wouldn't personally try it - this video is a good lesson though: we don't see as a microscope camera sees. Focusing on the minutia can distract from the overall look when we take a step back.
A good set of surgical loupes be more effective for you as a painter. There's still a learning curve but you get independent magnification for both eyes and better depth perception. I'd be interested in seeing a video comparing the performance and seeing which approach you prefer. However as a content creator this setup has the obvious advantage of also being able to capture footage.
Even with the model coming out at a lesser result, the video shows pretty invaluable information. Something pro painters repeat but the common people don't get unless physically shown - new tools are not the shortcut to a higher quality paint job. Just like with the brush, you'll need to practice to achieve a better result. I really like these videos, personally.
Honestly it will take a lot of patience and hand to eye coordination to master but so far the faces look really good. The eyes bring in the summary of the whole face so I’d recommend working on those for better practice
Your video inspired me to build a holder for my iPhone so i could zoom in on the miniature in the camera app. My eyes are not what they once were and miniatureeyes is just a blur for me. But zooming in made me able to "see" the eyes again. The holder i built is from a shoebox, as you can tilt the opening side. I used blue insulation foam that was cut in stripes to get a bar that the phone rests against. I set all in place with ducktape. 3 of the sides had to be cut out to let in light and my arms to hold the miniature and brush. And when it was set up i discovered all little mistakes i had made on my miniature :-(.
I think that's pretty cool. It's the equivalent of drawing on a PC using a tablet, which is quite different from drawing directly onto paper. The end result still looks better than what I do to faces.
I feel a little bad, but I burst out laughing at the face at 4:49 (only because I know you're a great painter) - the dude looked like he was in a car accident :D I've often thought about rigging up something like this, but I hadn't considered the loss of depth perception. A friend bought me a large magnifying glass meant for soldering, but it works really well for when I want to get in close so I can see detail, especially on faces that my naked eye just can't see.
Hey my dude, great video as always. One thing you should try if you ever have the chance is using a stereo microscope. I've used ones like the one you have for electronic projects and they're ok but not great. I now use a stereo microscope and hand soldering super tiny components is way easier. I'd never considered applying this tool to mini painting but I suspect the results would be the same. When you've got both eyes going at the same time things still appear in 3d just really big, the difference between those and what you've got there is night and day.
I paint almost exclusively with a led magnifying glass. It's only about 2x increase and really keeps me from straining my eyes. Highly recommended! like $25 or something on amazon

Thank you sooo sooo much for doing this. Since my eyesight got worse a couple of years ago, I now look at my minis by taking a picture with a 10MP camara, zoomed in to max and then bring the picture up on my computerscreen to zoom in even more. That gives me about the same close up as some of the pictures you showed in this video. Now, I've never really liked my own painting. I think it looks messy, perhaps the finish is a bit too shiny or the eyes don't look in the exact same direction, but now I saw the exact same thing on your minis and for once, I'm starting to think that maybe my paintjobs arn't that bad. Maybe I just use too much zoom...? Anyway, thank you for showing this and I really hope some of the other youtube painters do the same. It takes some guts, but I bet if they get a challenge from the great Squiggy, perhaps one or two will answer the call?
i have one of those for microsoldering. Great if you have the best brush control ever (i don't, microsoldering is a lot easier). I'm amazed at how quickly you are great with it. The better systems have a binocular setup, so you keep your depth of field / depth perception.,
Electronic technicians make a lot of use of microscopes. Especially with cellphone repair. There are a lot of options and prices out there. If you really want to try more painting this way., then you need to look more into the types of microscopes available and what would suit your needs. there are both digital and optical microscopes available, Opticals made be old school but they have some definite advantages. Better colour accuracy is one. And you can take pictures and record video with an optical by getting a video recorder to attach to the scope. But it's more money. The main thing to remember. Paying more money may not get you a better quality scope. But paying less money will definitely get you a lower-quality one.

The equivalent in work experience I have is explantation of specific organ tissue for plant research. We have to do it under a microscope. We have bracing of the sample, bracing of the tools, my arms are braced, I have to be positioned a certain way and I can only work so long before my hands fail the shake test and I get rotated out. It's a completely different skill set if I'm scoping vs if I am not. We have to learn how to move our arms differently, position our spine and elbows differently. You switching to this is probably more akin to you switching to a completely different medium or art. Yeah your skills help, but this is apples to aircraft carriers. He also probably learned all the little widget tricks he needs to do this, that you just haven't experienced. Kinda like if I compared my mini painting to yours. It wouldn't be a fair comparison.
I used a lot of videomicroscope when i worked in electronics manufacturing. there are ones with better depth of field and less imput lag, but they crazy expencive most of times I never thought i'll see theese in mini painting :D
That second face looked soooo good compared to the first one. Pretty insane how well you adapted to a new tool. Wouldn't blame you if you didn't use it except for a few cases due to how long it takes to use. Would love to see some stuff you can pull off with another 20-30 hours of practice!

Doing this is literally the biggest waste of time in hobby painting for 99.999999% of us but I love it. Always interested in learning more and understanding exactly where I won't be investing my hobby time!
That second face was a huge improvement. As a painter no where near you skill level can I suggest maybe a smaller brush for more control, as well as flow extender for more working time?
@Squidmar Hey, I am a noob to this hobby, so I do not know things at your level, but when I built my hobby space i bought a desk magnifier with a built in lamp. I am a dentist so my colegues at the office have them to clean tinny instruments so I thought it might be useful. You should look into that if you want to use some sort of magnification for your future projects, ita way easier to use, you do not need to look into a screen and the results from a pro painter like you should be comparable. Hope this advice helps!
In one of the comments on that video, Darren Han himself said it's not his equipment. One of his students brought it. I don't know if he started using one since then but in the other video I've seen he doesn't even use a magnifier when painting.
I feel like magnified goggles or a magnifying lamp(which i used to use before it broke in a move) would be a much better experience since you still get some depth perception. I have a friend who bought some goggles but I didnt think those were as good as the lamp
I'd say that this is a tool that you would only be good with after a _lot_ of practice, and it honestly didn't look like you had the right brushes for that fine of work. It's not going to be something that even a practiced painter is going to just pick up the stand and go right to town with. It's also something you'd probably reserve for important pieces where the additional time on just the face isn't going to feel wasted. On the other hand, you're skill with painting is already top notch. You really don't need this setup to get an amazing piece that will stand up to anything short of a microscope (which this thing is).
In many cases it's just called practice. Your muscles need to learn, your eyes needs to train. And that is with about any tool. What might seem hard at the beginning. It's like zoom glasses that surgeons,and dentists use. At first it might seem harder, but after you learn to use the tool you become better. Not saying this is the case with this tool. I say more time, and patience might result in better results, and become faster.
It's a Paradox to me. We're painting these 32mm figures in a specific way because they're meant to be viewed from a proportional distance. To fixate on painting at a this magnification level of detail is counterintuitive.
I've been thinking of trying something like this because I already have no depth perception because I lost sight in one eye and I had cataract surgery so it's difficult to focus up close any more with my good eye. I would have to clamp the figure being painted securely to the desk top, though.
What I feel would be far superior to this would be a proper inspection microscope . they will have no lag being entirely optical while and being very easy to use and not screwy with exact head /eye position like an ordinary microscope, and they let you retain your depth perception. Regretfully they are also quite expensive.
Considdering you Had Problems with depth perceptionbon the Screen try either a regular microscope (with lenses and Mordors) I'd assume 50-100 magnification should suffice or maybe some VR solution.
The type of setup is quite alright I think. There are others of the same type with much better depth perception, since these are also used for electronics soldering and damage inspection, but they are also more expensive than the one used here propably.
Someone with a generous budget and some skill could solve the depth of field issues with some off the shelf technology... The depth of field is something a talented maker could work around in several ways: You could mechanically link the camera and the model, or link the model to a mechanical sensor which control the camera focus. Regarding depth perception, I'd be curious what you might be able to do with either a 3D screen of a VR display. And yes, these would all probably be considered cheating if painting minis was an Olympic sport.
I've had mild rheumatoid arthritis since I was like 15,even if I saw the closeups that this machine gives I literally cannot do precise enough movements for this to make any difference for me. Don't get me wrong I still have a lot of control over my motions and I don't struggle with painting details etc,but this would be just too much.
Your face during that third attempt would make a great bust in and of itself! lol. In the end, it looked good and if you spend some time it will no doubt look amazing. Considering your' backlog however, I'm not sure it is worth the time sink. Even after you account for the fact that your speed will improve with use, it seems like a diminishing return...
Now what would be cool is if the company did an upgrade and had glasses you wear (like a VR headset) so it was a more natural way of sitting and “looking” at the miniature. Also when you make content like this I would love to see two identical heads painted with the different techniques so we can observe if differences. That being said you make great content as is and I’m just a faceless name in the crowd.🤔
This reminds me of when those ads of ear spoons with cameras that outputs to phones popped up a year or two ago - they were marketed to those who want to clean their ears solo. Those are dangerous to use due to the camera not providing a field of depth perception.
If you could somehow get two cameras with the right spacing between them, and someone to write the software... you could potentially use a VR headset to get depth perception.
I wish I had that setup Emil! Working with your hands through a screen takes a lot of practice, but it's practice I've had lots of. In fact it was how I learned to write. I use an iPad on a DJ table stand these days, but it's not comfortable for long-term use and it won't make for good painting. Do you have a link to the scope you bought? I have been looking at them from US sellers intended for science, microsoldering, etc … and they're out of my budget. If the one you picked up on aliexpress is working that well, maybe it's a little more attainable?

Four hours on one miniature face would drive me crazy. Kudos to you for doing it twice.

That’s pretty cool, idk if I would buy one but I have a desk light with a magnifying glass that works pretty well.
I have a 4inch magnifying glass led light on an arm that I use. It really does help once you get used to it!
Likewise, plus some watchmaker loupes…

i just use reading glasses at 2x they cost 3€ for a pair and is just a normal glasses frame instead of such a bulky thing

I use this as a radio repair technician. It takes getting used to, but its better foe your posture than using a microscope when working on a tint pcba

I feel like magnified goggles or a magnifying lamp(which i used to use before it broke in a move) would be a much better experience since you still get some depth perception. I have a friend who bought some goggles but I didnt think those were as good as the lamp
I'd say that this is a tool that you would only be good with after a _lot_ of practice, and it honestly didn't look like you had the right brushes for that fine of work. It's not going to be something that even a practiced painter is going to just pick up the stand and go right to town with. It's also something you'd probably reserve for important pieces where the additional time on just the face isn't going to feel wasted.
On the other hand, you're skill with painting is already top notch. You really don't need this setup to get an amazing piece that will stand up to anything short of a microscope (which this thing is).
what camera did you buy please ? at 53 my eyes are not what they used to be. This could help me keep painting :)

In many cases it's just called practice. Your muscles need to learn, your eyes needs to train. And that is with about any tool. What might seem hard at the beginning. It's like zoom glasses that surgeons,and dentists use. At first it might seem harder, but after you learn to use the tool you become better. Not saying this is the case with this tool. I say more time, and patience might result in better results, and become faster.

It's a Paradox to me. We're painting these 32mm figures in a specific way because they're meant to be viewed from a proportional distance. To fixate on painting at a this magnification level of detail is counterintuitive.

I've been thinking of trying something like this because I already have no depth perception because I lost sight in one eye and I had cataract surgery so it's difficult to focus up close any more with my good eye. I would have to clamp the figure being painted securely to the desk top, though.

What I feel would be far superior to this would be a proper inspection microscope . they will have no lag being entirely optical while and being very easy to use and not screwy with exact head /eye position like an ordinary microscope, and they let you retain your depth perception. Regretfully they are also quite expensive.
Considdering you Had Problems with depth perceptionbon the Screen try either a regular microscope (with lenses and Mordors) I'd assume 50-100 magnification should suffice or maybe some VR solution.
The type of setup is quite alright I think. There are others of the same type with much better depth perception, since these are also used for electronics soldering and damage inspection, but they are also more expensive than the one used here propably.
You should try painting a landscape on a piece of rice
try a stereoscopic industrial microscope you will have a better perception of depth than on a screen

Someone with a generous budget and some skill could solve the depth of field issues with some off the shelf technology...
The depth of field is something a talented maker could work around in several ways:
You could mechanically link the camera and the model, or link the model to a mechanical sensor which control the camera focus.
Regarding depth perception, I'd be curious what you might be able to do with either a 3D screen of a VR display.
And yes, these would all probably be considered cheating if painting minis was an Olympic sport.

I've had mild rheumatoid arthritis since I was like 15,even if I saw the closeups that this machine gives I literally cannot do precise enough movements for this to make any difference for me.
Don't get me wrong I still have a lot of control over my motions and I don't struggle with painting details etc,but this would be just too much.
It would drive me nuts, the finesse required would give me a mental tick if nothing else

Your face during that third attempt would make a great bust in and of itself! lol. In the end, it looked good and if you spend some time it will no doubt look amazing.
Considering your' backlog however, I'm not sure it is worth the time sink. Even after you account for the fact that your speed will improve with use, it seems like a diminishing return...
Now what would be cool is if the company did an upgrade and had glasses you wear (like a VR headset) so it was a more natural way of sitting and “looking” at the miniature.
Also when you make content like this I would love to see two identical heads painted with the different techniques so we can observe if differences.
That being said you make great content as is and I’m just a faceless name in the crowd.🤔

This reminds me of when those ads of ear spoons with cameras that outputs to phones popped up a year or two ago - they were marketed to those who want to clean their ears solo.
Those are dangerous to use due to the camera not providing a field of depth perception.
If you could somehow get two cameras with the right spacing between them, and someone to write the software... you could potentially use a VR headset to get depth perception.
Dollar store, 3x reading glasses. Cheap and really effective.
I wish I had that setup Emil! Working with your hands through a screen takes a lot of practice, but it's practice I've had lots of. In fact it was how I learned to write. I use an iPad on a DJ table stand these days, but it's not comfortable for long-term use and it won't make for good painting. Do you have a link to the scope you bought? I have been looking at them from US sellers intended for science, microsoldering, etc … and they're out of my budget. If the one you picked up on aliexpress is working that well, maybe it's a little more attainable?
