LBJ had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of senate rules and procedures. He was also instrumental in corralling the southern states inspite of their objections to the party platform in 1960. They felt they had been betrayed by the party since the 1948 election.
Sorry...I am a vet from that era and I voted for him in 1964, but he is responsible for the grinder in Vietnam. He got the Civil Rights Bill passed because it was time and the work of MLK and others made it happen.
Lyndon Johnson carried the following states for the Kennedy Johnson ticket : Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama , Georgia , south Carolina, Delaware, Nevada, New Mexico and Hawaii for a total of 83 electoral votes which gave the Kennedy Johnson ticket a total of ,,,,303 electoral votes without Johnson Kennedy would have only had,,220 and Nixon would have won election
LBJ will go down as one of the most successful Senate majority leader in the history of our country but one of the most mediocre Presidents of all time. He was on the ticket for one reason and one reason only to carry Texas and not get wiped out in the south. Once the election of 1960 was done, LBJ served no use to Kennedy and which is why they deeply resented each other afterwards
Another reason JFK wanted LBJ on the ticket, was to have Senator Mike Mansfield succeed Johnson as Majority Leader of the Senate. LBJ had one of the biggest egos amongst the "power players" in the Congress. It would be easier for JFK to deal with LBJ, in the role of Vice President compared to LBJ, in the role of Senate Majority Leader. Senator Mansfield is closer to JFK on a personal basis (both entering the Senate in 1953 after serving in the House together) and there wouldn't be a "clash of egos" with Mansfield.
He wasn’t a mediocre president at all. One of the most consequential in history. Vietnam was awful to be sure, but his domestic accomplishments were second to none.
I wonder if this is the last time he was on one of the Sunday news shows,or did he make any appearances as vice-president?
CBS's use of Stravinsky's FIREBIRD as theme music was a stroke of genius. LBJ always looked older than his actual age.
LBJ was only 64 years of age when he died in 1973-two days after Nixon’s second inauguration.

Even with big majorities. Taft-Hartley has never been repealed to this day
They didn’t carry the entire South. Nixon won Virginia, Florida, Tennessee and Kentucky
Still carried the Deep South plus West Virginia and Missouri

@@stewiegriffin12341he had to gave Republican votes. After the 1966 election his agenda was DOA in the house.
