I have kids young enough that I can't leave them home alone and I live in an area where my local big box gym is nearly always busy enough that I'm constantly shuffling around intended exercises and exercise order - a 45 to 60min workout can take 75 to 90 min just because I'm waiting on people to move off stations I'm intending to use. I tolerated the gym for about two thirds to three quarters of last year and I grew to hate the experience; I loved working out but not in busy gyms and trying to make sure my wife or a babysitter could be home with the kids. Getting my garage gym set up changed my workouts pretty quickly. From Sep to Nov, I went from splitting my workouts between the commercial gym and home gym (go to the gym for a few leg machines for
i've thought about getting a membership just for the winter season because my space gets very cold, but I could never go back to using a commercial gym long term. In my home gym I can consistently use the equipment I want. In a commercial gym you're at the mercy of however many people are there and which machines/benches are already taken.
If you can find a gym that you can put your membership on hold or even go month to month is a good exchange. Summers outside workout with cardio emphasis and use bands.
I have been toying with the idea of going back to the gym but after working out at home with bands using progressive overload, in addition to alternating with calisthenics workouts. I am too lazy to go back. Still paying my monthly gym fee which is dirt cheap in case I need variety but I don’t feel the need to go back. Not as big as I used to be when I went to the gym but I don’t care. Just want to be strong and healthy at the very least. The size loss is probably due to reduced frequency and not enough meals. But once I tie those things up, I believe I can get that size back.
Interesting… as a solo parent I couldn’t go to a gym on a regular basis. Small home allowed for Total Gym/Bands/Adjustable dumbbells and TRX. I moved to a larger home in 23 and went down the rack/barbell path. Gave my TG to a relative. Freezing in NorthEast. Been contemplating the local Y because of month to month and kids are older. The other thing I found gets me in the best shape at home is Tony Horton programs. So I am debating p90x3 and Hard Corps dvds versus the Y. Temped to sell rack/barbell on marketplace.I also picked up a TG fit on marketplace because I missed not having it.
Appriciate that honest in the story on what was working / not working for you. I can attest the garage is a cold place in the winter. I know it's the number one reason my wife doesn't use my equipment. Ironically just saw our old P90X dvds today. My wife used to love those
@ Thank you. I could identify to your video. Tony Horton has a newer page too. I am leaning towards getting through winter using his dvds. I use the TG as substitute to some of his moves as I follow along. Actually part of the reason I pickup another FIT off MP was when you listed the new TG as a top 2024 machine.
Going to the gym vs home gym is just like going to work or working from home. It's convenient at home, but easy to get distracted. I work out at home more than the gym because of convenience. I joined a gym because they have a very hot dry sauna; something I would never have at home (it's hard to find a HOT sauna, should be around 220 degreesF). While there, it's a good break in the routine to use their equipment. I also joined the rec center because they have a 25m pool -- city run, it was very cheap to join.
Only times I workout when not in my house is when I stay at a hotel. I’m okay if I’m in there by myself or if others are using the treadmills which seems to nearly everyone. If someone else is using equipment, my ego drops up a bit Hahaha. Getting to your point here, for the low cost options like planet fitness, that’s less than $200/yr. You can’t buy much equipment for that. I need to tally up what I have purchased over the years. So if you have nothing or don’t want to dedicate the space it is a great idea. Happy New Year.
Thanks Brock. I didn't count that in the video, but I had a few "hotel workouts" in the last few years that really made me appreciate my gym all the more.
I have a cheap $10/ month gym membership. While I definitely prefer my home gym for free weights, the gym has all sorts of machines that I would never be able to have in my gym. When I go, I enjoy using those and get great workouts. Thanks to your videos on lever arms and leverage machines, I recently bought cheap lever arms to try to replicate machines - we’ll see how well that goes. I may just go to the commercial gym day a week just to hit machines. $10/month is too good a price for access to so much equipment.
@@jtam222 awesome to hear that. It’s pretty hard to beat that membership cost per month. If I had one near me, I think it’d be worth it for the stair climber alone personally.
I’m lucky enough to live a block away from a brand new gym and in a climate where it’s a comfortable walk all year. I got the introductory membership for cheap and there’s almost no selfie stuff going on and it’s never crowded. I still only go over there about twice a month to swim in the pool. I like being able to set up my workouts the night before and do them as soon as I wake up while making breakfast at the same time. I’m seeing comments saying that they go for cardio but I find that the cardio machines at gym get beat up pretty fast. A Concept 2 rowerg or skierg doesn’t cost that much and holds its value for resale. I don’t see the value of a gym membership and I’ve got the best possible situation. I still haven’t cancelled though 😂. Thanks for the great video. It’s always important to check in on our decisions every once in a while and make sure that they make sense still.
Good points! I was one of the people who was doing gym for half the year with the wife! I keep a gym membership year round now for the sauna, red light, and spin classes! My gym is a complete zoo this time of year you've basically got to go 5 AM or before they close! Home gym equipment all I've got is a TG, X3, and isochain! There's value in supplementing your home gym with a cheap gym membership!
That was you brother. Consider this the "shout out". I also did fail to mention those amenities. How do you like and or do you notice anything from that red light?
@@hybridresistance I like red light a lot during winter when it's hard to get sunlight. Notice faster workout recovery, reduced body fat, mood increase. Supposedly there's a substantial testosterone increase. For the cons there might be some radiation from it but not sure how much it has to be less than tanning. Helps my headaches a lot
I have a Planet Fitness membership. They have a ton of stuff at my location that would be difficult to replicate at home. I've been a member since 2021, so my membership is onky $21 / month for their Black Card membership. My issue is I hate crowds, and no matter what time I seem to go, there are a lot of people. For the price, I'm probably going to keep my PF membership, but I will try to do more stuff at home and keep my gym time less than an hour (currently spending about 90 minutes, plus 20 minutes each way commute time).
I rather use my own exercise equipment. A gym membership is far cheaper than buying home gym equipment, but there is the problem of "distance decay", which refers to the fact that the likelihood of a person regularly working out in a commercial gym diminishes as the distance between the person and the commercial gym increases.
I'm lucky in the fact that I'm still able to use my former employer's gym for free. They let retirees continue to use it. The downside is that it's 30 miles away. I live in a rural small town and I have never been inside the fitness center they have in town and have no idea what it costs or how well equipped it is. These days I prefer to work out at home because I don't want to have to wait for equipment or deal with loud people. If I had to go drive to a gym, I would probably work out less than I do now.
I'm team #HomeGym again for 2025. I hit a commercial gym 6-12 times/year and a hotel/resort gyms another 12+ times per year. I really like it because every time I go I meet new people. And the stares I get by being an old guy who can press 3 plates at my size is a TOTAL ego boost!!!! But, I am contantly reminded by the people who don't wipe down machines, re rack weights, put weights in the wrong place or set up camp to film or monopolize a machine I want to use, exactly why I love my home gym. I don't have everthing at home, but I have everthing I need and it makes me think creatively about my exercises and movements. Plus my wife just got me the coolest sign for the entrance to the basment home gym! #TeamHomeGym!
It's been 10 years since I hit a public gym. I prefer working out at home now but it does take an extra step of discipline. One perk for working out at home is I'm the strongest guy in the gym 😉
Going back to a public gym to use subpar equipment that was used and bad when they bought it and to get sick from other people’s germs once a year is not worth the few upsides. Plus who wants to pay for gas to go back and forth and use the extra time in your day. So nah I’ll keep using my nice stuff 😂
I use my home gym 5 to 6 times a week for an hour each so it’s definitely worth it. Sometimes my wife and I go to a weight lifting hiit class but that’s mainly for cardio. Only exercise I do outside home gym is hockey 3 times a week haha
@ my gym on my channel is like 90 sft which is enough for me. Got the ironmaster 2000, pepin fast series, bowflex adjustable barbell, various attachments. Waiting on the super bench v2 with the sit up attachment and the preacher pad. You don’t need much to make gains lol during covid I bought a pull up/ dip station and just did mostly weighted calisthenics
Having a membership and a home gym is really nice. You have the convenience of being able to work out at home if you're pressed for time, and you have access to way more equipment than you could ever fit in your house when you need it. I've also priced out my favorite pieces of equipment I use at my local gym, and to buy them for the home gym would cost about $16,000. I'll stick with the $45 membership for now 🤣.
I have the basic PF membership (recently jumped from $10 to $15 a month) and just go for the cardio machines. It's nice to watch youtube videos while running or walking on the treadmill, using the elliptical or bikes. Also I'm in Miami so there's plenty of other eye candy to motivate you. It's hard getting the most sought after machines or equipment unless you go at random hours though. I think it's worth it for me since I am going once or twice a week and I don't need a giant treadmill in my apartment. The rest of the time I work out in my home gym.
@@hybridresistance Got a set of 70lb Powerblocks and the GIKPAL adjustable bench for weights. Also have a 65 pound weighted vest, some kettlebells, a jump rope, and resistance bands + bar w/ the Step platform. I'm using the Vortex split squat belt recently and liking that a lot so far. Also just upgraded from a door way pull up bar to the Fit! Home Gym 3.0 w/ Rogue Rings on them. My main workout goals will be calisthenics and body weight related in addition to training for an upcoming 5k. For forearms and grip I have some Captains of Crush and the best tool the Sidewinder ProXtreme Forearm Twister.
if you're not working out much then to me a gym membership is a bad value but so is a home gym- if i did that i would do what i used to do and have basic stuff: dumbbells and bench. i went to the gym off and on over the years when it was free in the military, i lived near a base and could go free and last couple years before i finished my home gym i had a local gym membership... i don't like socializing when im working/workin out, i don't like other people's messes, you still have to pick up your stufc unless you're a slob jerk, the drive and waiting on the popular equipment, equipment being broken. the one thing i miss is the indoor pool but i get get a day pass now when i want to go
I was thinking about reactivating my Planet Fitness membership just for some of the leg machines. Just like the convenience of just rolling out of bed and working out. Plus it annoyed me to no end that they don't open until 7am on weekends.
It’s important not to become too fixated on choosing between a home gym or a commercial gym, as a combination of both can often be ideal for many people. Personally, I find a home gym to be perfect, especially when you have small children. It offers flexibility, allows you to set a good example, and even provides opportunities to involve them in your fitness routine.
Hi Mike, you have a gym that people would kill for you, but you just don't have much space which is a common problem. The gym industry knows that people are making New Year's resolutions, but they know most people don't keep up with it and drop off going to the gym after a while. However, the gyms get paid regardless. There are ways of cutting costs with gym memberships getting home equipment or walking weather permitting riding a bike using park equipment calisthenics. Having home equipment cuts down on going to crowded gyms, waiting to use certain equipment, and dealing with rude people at the gym. This is especially true in big cities. No doubt there are certain pieces of equipment you will find at the gym you aren't going to find anywhere else if you get a chance to use it.
I keep a cheap 10/mo planet fitness membership for the stair master and some of the more specialized pieces (hand cycle for shoulder rehab) that i dont have room for or care to invest in at home
I had a gym membership that I was able to go to so many gyms in this network for only 30 dollars. It was great having that option and a home gym, but they changed and I had to choose a gym (only one). I’m going to cancel that but I now have a gym membership for only 10 dollars. I go for like you said leg press, stairmaster, and sauna (mainly). I buy things in my gym the commercial gym won’t have.
48 yrs old former athlete and now blue collar worker with a family and beautiful home and home gym. ❤ Gyms are TOXIC now with phones and narcissistic men and women.
I miss the variety of equipment in the gym I used to go to but perhaps more so than that, I miss the fellowship with people I had met over the years. I now have a decent home gym and I wouldn't give that up but I've considered going back to the gym a few times a month. They (retro) make it hard though with the enrollment and yearly maintenance fees on top of the monthly rate. And their daily rates are ridiculous. It smells like gouging to me.
@@hybridresistance yeah planet fitness is actually starting to install some new pieces such as hack squats and plate loaded chest presses. In addition they have several pieces that are often just impractical for home gyms so it seems like it could be a good idea since they have so many locations and membership is very affordable. A single home gym piece like a hack squat could be the equivalent of 4 years of membership there
I couldn't ever go back to a commercial gym... With ppl not picking /cleaning up after themselves, fighting with others for equipment use, and then the selfie CULTure with so many goofballs filming themselves - nope. I'm done. Home gym for life
Just as you said. It's totally individual, and I'm all about getting people exercising. If going to a gym gets someone exercising I totally support it. But I'll never set foot in a commercial gym again unless, maybe it's an old school hardcore hole in the wall w/ OG Nautilus equipment. Which I can't afford and don't have space for. W/ that being said most of the people I see on youtube who have home gyms have way too much, and promote this idea of having to have so much that can become a barrier. As a matter of fact if I came across your channel today I wouldn't be interested, but I started w/ you back in the day when you were using just the total gym and showing people how to get even more out of it.
@@hybridresistance a Rogue Monster rack which is a nice staple, I’ve been enjoying the simplicity of the naked rack. Also, a Rogue Rhino which is excessive for Homes, but I’m liking experimenting with that, pulls, and bicep curls lol (I really like the feeling of a true vertical pull for some exercises). A couple “Tuff stuff” pieces which I don’t think exists anymore, but good commercial grade stuff. All the leg machines and cardio machines, bands on bands, dumbbell rack that goes very heavy, heavy kettlebells, sandbags with handles, sled. A cable crossover machine, but I think we are going to get a free motion cable machine. Fortunate to say the least.
I have a basic home gym : power rack, barbells, dumbells... I also go to a commercial gym near my home. This gym is open H24. So i go there at 11 pm and l am almost alone 😉 i only pay 20 euros. Some at home get too much and expensive equipments, they don't use.
I don’t believe the 15 dollar membership is actually the real price. My buddy at work I believe pays 25 or 30 for planet fitness. The 15 dollars is basically to use nothing. Is it still cheaper than my home gym yes but I also don’t have to put up with UA-camrs and tick tockers. That alone makes me love my home gym more. I had a gym membership in the 90’s. The only issues I had were the old timers who read the news paper in the middle of a set. I kept my workouts to 50 minutes or an hour and I got out to go to work. Now I train when I want to, no distractions, no waits and if I miss a day I don’t feel super guilty for paying that membership. Is my gym more expensive yes. I have my gym for about 8 years and maybe I spent 4 on it. So that’s about 500 a year.
Used to train at the gym when there were Gold's and World Gym's. When I went you didn't wear headphones, and you talked to folks. You mention all the machines you can use, sure when you go off hours. All the machines I want to use at normal hours I wait for the cool kids to stop texting while they actually sit on the machine for 10 minutes or so, and don't ask to work in because they are filming their non-sense. Just saying. Yup, I've become the cranky old guy now, but I actually still look like I lift. 😃

From Sep to Nov, I went from splitting my workouts between the commercial gym and home gym (go to the gym for a few leg machines for
@@Two_Names loved reading this my friend. This among the others, I think helps others put things into perspective.
i've thought about getting a membership just for the winter season because my space gets very cold, but I could never go back to using a commercial gym long term. In my home gym I can consistently use the equipment I want. In a commercial gym you're at the mercy of however many people are there and which machines/benches are already taken.
very true. When I followed a strength program at the gym that required a power rack, it was anxiety driving to the gym hoping a rack was open.
If you can find a gym that you can put your membership on hold or even go month to month is a good exchange. Summers outside workout with cardio emphasis and use bands.
@@bhvghvfy definitely a good option
I have been toying with the idea of going back to the gym but after working out at home with bands using progressive overload, in addition to alternating with calisthenics workouts. I am too lazy to go back. Still paying my monthly gym fee which is dirt cheap in case I need variety but I don’t feel the need to go back. Not as big as I used to be when I went to the gym but I don’t care. Just want to be strong and healthy at the very least. The size loss is probably due to reduced frequency and not enough meals. But once I tie those things up, I believe I can get that size back.
Love that honesty and optimism David
I use to go to the commercial gym but time was an issue cause of my schedule. My home gym helps me with consistency and that alone is worth it.
That's #1 for sure.
It's situations like this where it makes sense, plus sounds like your vibe at your gym isn't as bad as what others are describing out there.
Great perspective, thanks for sharing all of that. I can attest that a C2 does hold its resale value.
@ very interesting thanks for sharing that
I have a Planet Fitness membership.
@@edsweeney6843 thanks for sharing that Ed. I can imagine they have to be crowded.
I rather use my own exercise equipment. A gym membership is far cheaper than buying home gym equipment, but there is the problem of "distance decay", which refers to the fact that the likelihood of a person regularly working out in a commercial gym diminishes as the distance between the person and the commercial gym increases.
For sure a classical point of working out from home.
Banger after banger. Just makes sense. I keep a membership for leg day. I like to use a leg press, but I can’t justify a home use one
Makes sense to me if it's convenient for sure.
Can't beat free. I'm sure your rural town isn't as crazy as some of these other ones I'm hearing about.
@@hybridresistance Well, there is a lot of crime here compared to what the population is. It's a low poverty area unfortunately.
I love it. You're doing something right over there still pushing 3 plates!
It's been 10 years since I hit a public gym. I prefer working out at home now but it does take an extra step of discipline. One perk for working out at home is I'm the strongest guy in the gym 😉
@@scotchbudmeister9018you hit on an understated point about discipline in the home gym.
Going back to a public gym to use subpar equipment that was used and bad when they bought it and to get sick from other people’s germs once a year is not worth the few upsides. Plus who wants to pay for gas to go back and forth and use the extra time in your day. So nah I’ll keep using my nice stuff 😂
I don't have the most expensive stuff, but you do start to wonder how much more "better quality" commercial really was.
I use my home gym 5 to 6 times a week for an hour each so it’s definitely worth it. Sometimes my wife and I go to a weight lifting hiit class but that’s mainly for cardio. Only exercise I do outside home gym is hockey 3 times a week haha
@@aynrandfan7454 I like that, it’s a solid plan
@ my gym on my channel is like 90 sft which is enough for me. Got the ironmaster 2000, pepin fast series, bowflex adjustable barbell, various attachments. Waiting on the super bench v2 with the sit up attachment and the preacher pad. You don’t need much to make gains lol during covid I bought a pull up/ dip station and just did mostly weighted calisthenics
@@aynrandfan7454 Simple is usually better. Thanks for listing all the equipment.
@@Bro-siah no doubt when it comes to building a decked out home gym, you’re gonna be faced with either the space or money issue at some point.
I liked PF for the price gyms are up to 30 to 40 with LA fitness
That makes sense, I was wondering if they raised the price. What kind of stuff do you have in the apartment?
@@hybridresistance Got a set of 70lb Powerblocks and the GIKPAL adjustable bench for weights. Also have a 65 pound weighted vest, some kettlebells, a jump rope, and resistance bands + bar w/ the Step platform. I'm using the Vortex split squat belt recently and liking that a lot so far. Also just upgraded from a door way pull up bar to the Fit! Home Gym 3.0 w/ Rogue Rings on them. My main workout goals will be calisthenics and body weight related in addition to training for an upcoming 5k. For forearms and grip I have some Captains of Crush and the best tool the Sidewinder ProXtreme Forearm Twister.
if you're not working out much then to me a gym membership is a bad value but so is a home gym- if i did that i would do what i used to do and have basic stuff: dumbbells and bench.
i went to the gym off and on over the years when it was free in the military, i lived near a base and could go free and last couple years before i finished my home gym i had a local gym membership...
i don't like socializing when im working/workin out, i don't like other people's messes, you still have to pick up your stufc unless you're a slob jerk, the drive and waiting on the popular equipment, equipment being broken.
the one thing i miss is the indoor pool but i get get a day pass now when i want to go
Some people are straight spoiled by their pools at these gyms. Great comment all around, thank you
I was thinking about reactivating my Planet Fitness membership just for some of the leg machines. Just like the convenience of just rolling out of bed and working out. Plus it annoyed me to no end that they don't open until 7am on weekends.
That is crazy that such a major chain opens that late on the weekends.
I think i love buying gym equipment more than using them. And i do love using them
I'm with you on that.
All great points.
@@wilfredotorres6628 all great points, thank you for sharing that
I keep a cheap 10/mo planet fitness membership for the stair master and some of the more specialized pieces (hand cycle for shoulder rehab) that i dont have room for or care to invest in at home
Totally makes sense.

Sound God blessed you brother.
I’ve done just about 20 years in a gym and as of a couple months ago I’m home gym all the way haha don’t see myself going back anytime soon
Love that.
I hear you on all of that.
Lol very timely. I just went to check out my local planet fitness and have debated getting a membership to supplement the home gym
@@AlexanderRodriguez-lm1qw I’m sure you’re not alone in this brother
@@hybridresistance yeah planet fitness is actually starting to install some new pieces such as hack squats and plate loaded chest presses. In addition they have several pieces that are often just impractical for home gyms so it seems like it could be a good idea since they have so many locations and membership is very affordable. A single home gym piece like a hack squat could be the equivalent of 4 years of membership there
I have friends who can't train at home because of no social interaction and they have home gyms. Crazy to me but I am bias lol
Loved this comment and this is something I'm going to be hitting on an upcoming video.

A couple “Tuff stuff” pieces which I don’t think exists anymore, but good commercial grade stuff.
Sounds like we need some "enforcers" in these gyms now days.
You couldn't pay me to go back to a commercial gym.
If you got your set up and you're already consistent at your home gym, I don't think many would disagree with that.
Only 3 machines I can use at the gym. Cigarette machine, soda machine, and snack machine. JK!!
