Though they mostly only do this if they are already hungry: It takes a bit of energy to gestate eggs and stuff for an insect, so eating their mate is done to ensure that they'll be well fed and will have a bit of extra energy for the coming days so that they'll actually survive until it's time to lay those eggs... Just like Modeus to romanticise it though. xD
