Thanks for the video! I showed my father this at dinner, after we ate we got the crowbar, a block of wood and a hammer...all finished and loaded in the back of the truck . total time 1:30 min! his was an 8ft corner setup that he's hated since the day he moved in!
THANK YOU for sharing this! I have been putting this off since we moved in! I told myself this would be the first DIY project and had no idea where to start
Thank you for posting this! I’m ripping one out today and I’m really glad to know I don’t need to set up sheeting and wear a respirator with a grinder lol
Thanks for posting this. I just finished our ugly rock removal. It only took 4 hours thanks to this video. Our rocks where better attached to the wall so it was a bit more difficult and resulted in a vast amount of dust but the job went faster then I expected.
Loved the video. I googled how to take down a fake rock wall and found this video. Sitting around with friends one was defending how nice the rock was, so I showed her this video. Apparently now she needs to go home and check in her closet! :) On the serious side, this video shows me what I wanted to know, and that is how the rock is attached, and how to get it off.
Thank you so very much for the great video and even greater thanks for sharing it. I just found a house and this stuff is around the fireplace. I will also take a look at my closet. Even though I do not like the rocks I could be making some fashion faux pas. I don't know.
Thanks! we have the same rock (but even worse! they are browns and oranges!) Trying to convince the husband to remove them, maybe this will help convince him.
Ha ha. I have the exact same rock wall in our place - and it is coming down soon! Thanks for the tips. What did you do to the wall after removing the rock wall?
It certainly is up there very solid. But I would guess the more weight you add the more unsafe it would be. And you would loose considerable depth in the room.
After pulling our rocks down in a similar fashion, I can tell you that our rocks were MUCH better attached to the wall than yours were. And there was a huge amount of dust.
We adopted this style when we purchased our home. We hate it. We see the wire mesh is attached to plywood, which plywood is attached to wall. Could we use this same process you think?
Very, very hideous. You got that right. Lol I'm staring at my hideous faux stone fireplace surround as I type in my newly acquired home. . Ugh. It's so bossy! Dictates all the colors and undertones in the house (if you want it to look right) I need to paint it or maybe have nice millwork placed right over it. Thanks for the video!
When we bought our house in 1973 my husband covered our brick fireplace with that fake stone and used real stone on the hearth. What I would give to be able to remove all the mess and restore the brick. I don't even know if restoring brick can be done.
You could remove it the same way I did. No doubt there will be remnants of cement or grout left over on the brick but you might be able to clean it with an etching acid.
@@cgifly2 I was thinking about it then I remembered how we had the floors refinished so if we removed the stone the old floor is going to show, At some point, the FP can be restored and at the same new flooring can be installed too. I can't afford to do it but someone will. It is nice to know it can be done. Some people are complaining that the stone is an old and outdated look and it probably is - but generally speaking the stone brings character to the space. I am going to add some faux logs to warn up the room, decorate the mantel, and call it a day.
I have that rock on my fireplace probably over the original stone fireplace. Will the stone be messed up below it? How would i clean the stone to look good again?
I am not really sure you have a brick wall underneath, because this fake rock was really a cheap way to just install over bare drywall. If you did infact have it over brick they somehow would need to install all wire mesh onto the brick to hold the cement that the rocks sit in. That would be tuff to do. If it were me and I suspected that, I would simply start at a small end corner and take off one or two stones to see what’s underneath.
Do you think I can just paint it? Did that once to a great HUGE WALL FIREPLACE that was dark brown - painted it terra cotta; but have never dealt with these fake ones. Makes the dining room look so dark. Any suggestions would be helpful. Can't do what you did. Thanks.
My ugly rocks look just like that but in addition to the wall they also cover the brick face of the fireplace. Any tips for removing them from the bricks? Is that possible?
This technic works for one reason and under one condition. Incorrect installation. Your lucky, under correct conditions ,this would do nothing. That mesh should have been covered with a scratch coat, a bonding agent or at least water applied to form a hydraulic seal for the mortar bead. If done correctly, the only way those rock are removed ,is everything from the rock to the studs comes off and it is far from an easy task. Luckily tas not the case here.
Try more like the 70s, man! IF this was going in during new home construction in the late 80s and early 90s someone clearly did not get the memo that the trend was dead long ago!
Chris. Thanks for the observation, but apparently this must have been done a lot. I have many comments from people as to how well this worked for them also. No one have ever said it didn’t work for them. Just saying.
We were in the same boat... not knowing what's under it. But if you don't like it you just have to make sure you've got a bit of backup $$ to account for surprises and go for it. They're probably mostly all the same from at least the same era. Ours was exactly the same as the one in this video, but like Mr. Sarauer (above post) our was MUCH harder to get off that this one. Good luck if you haven't already done it!

Thank you for making this video!! I can't wait to redo my ugly stone fireplace now!!
Thank you! Thank you ! Thank you. I have been looking at this forever and hating it soooo much!! You are a life saver!!!
I bought a house with a bathroom with these Hideous walls! I’m thankful for this video. It’s the first thing I will get ripped out and remodeled!
Your very welcome, there is another video in my collection that shows what we did with the wall AFTER we put another layer of drywall up.
Loved the video. I googled how to take down a fake rock wall and found this video. Sitting around with friends one was defending how nice the rock was, so I showed her this video. Very helpful! Thanks for sharing this!
Haha I laughed so hard!
Good for u for taking that down!
Thank you for posting this, extremely helpful!
Your welcome if you go to my channel you can see what we did with the wall when done.
Thank you so much for this video. My ugly fireplace looks almost exactly like yours so I am going to give this a try.
So very welcome, do as I say not as I did make sure to wear goggles and gloves.
Oh, bless u. I have been looking at this ....stuff.... For a year now and i cannot live with it any longer. This i can do. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this!!
Thanks for the inspiration! We took out a fake rock fireplace today in 40 minutes start to finish on a whim!
I'm all about the DIY-thanks, I'm on it
Thanks for the video. I hate that stone too. Gonna try this.
thank you for the video. i wonder if the same technique will work on an outdoor stone wall. it looks like it's set in concrete
wow you are the bomb for showing this, very helpful , thank you !
I am glad this was helpful to all feel free to share with others
Thank you. I am about to tackle a fireplace and wall, I am glad I saw this
Okay. I just got this house in Largo, Florida and it has that same thing. I need to get rid of it and I will follow what you said to do.
Yes once you get the rock off and uncover the wire mesh, removing the staples will be relatively easy.
Thank you so very much for the great video and even greater thanks for sharing it. I just found a house and this stuff is around the fireplace. I will also take a look at my closet. Even though I do not like the rocks I could be making some fashion faux pas. I don't know.
Yes! This make me feel like I can do it without sending alot of money.tyank you for the share.
Thank you for sharing. I just bought a house with this all over the fireplace. Hopefully the same rules apply
Antonio Carter same for me!
Were you able to do this? I have the same and curious if there's a brick wall behind it.
Helpful and funny! Thank you.
Thanks! we have the same rock (but even worse! they are browns and oranges!) Trying to convince the husband to remove them, maybe this will help convince him.
Thank you for this vid!!
Good job dadio!
We are going to try this on ours! It’s time for it to go!!
I will be trying this. Wish me luck!
Yes almost impossible to clean real well. And you can do so much more with wall when it's done. Like mount a 70" tv!
Thank you
Ha ha. I have the exact same rock wall in our place - and it is coming down soon! Thanks for the tips. What did you do to the wall after removing the rock wall?
Omg I have a 12' long wall that is 10" high, with a fireplace. I'm starting this project after Thanksgiving. Fingers crossed.
i will be doing this soon . thanks
ooohhhh thank you I have that in my basement
Thanks for this! I need to pull this ugly stone off the front of my home and was wondering what’s the best way to do it. Hope the outdoor is the same!
If it is please post here so others will know.
Was is the same outside? I have the same rock outside and inside on my fireplace.
It certainly is up there very solid. But I would guess the more weight you add the more unsafe it would be. And you would loose considerable depth in the room.

Oh so its not actually like carved into the wall. Thank you im definitely trying this. I dont like the rock slabs design I have around my fireplace
Oh my gosh! That's the exact same abomination we've been looking at for the past four years. Now we know what to do. Thanks for posting!
Yeah it’s a snap on pry bar that has a small bend right at the end. I am sure any pry bar will do.
That is normally how all face rock ( or decorative) is set in and same technic would work. But be careful of what's behind.
Yes, carefull with whats behind. The backer board is supposed to be fire rated, and can contain asbestos.
We adopted this style when we purchased our home. We hate it. We see the wire mesh is attached to plywood, which plywood is attached to wall. Could we use this same process you think?
Very, very hideous. You got that right. Lol

Omg, thanks YOU!! I hate hate hate my flag stone wall. Another diy for hubby and l.
You wouldn’t happen to be my neighbor in Holiday Lake Estates because you have the exact stone and ceiling lights I have...LOL

Nice
Hello from the future! They say trends come back every now and then, if in 2009 you thought this was ugly, it is 2022 and still ugly AF!!!
I have that rock on my fireplace probably over the original stone fireplace. Will the stone be messed up below it? How would i clean the stone to look good again?

Can’t wait to take mine down!
What did you replace it with????
If you look at my other videos,it’s called “fireplace” it’s what we did to the wall after we demolished it.
Is that just a pry bar?
you just figured this out?
Oh man we have to do this when we buy my grandparents house the stones have the copper tones it’s not my favorite or pretty to me
What about outdoor stone set in concrete any tips ?
Sorry but I have no experience with that.
My ugly rocks look just like that but in addition to the wall they also cover the brick face of the fireplace. Any tips for removing them from the bricks? Is that possible?
Did u ever do that? Im in that situation
You just now saw this!!!!???
Put a clean sheet of drywall up and tiled just around the fire place. Check the video out called " fire place"

Our house was built in 1976, no remodel, and same ugly stone!
Ours is an exterier front wall I HATE
Chris. Thanks for the observation, but apparently this must have been done a lot. I have many comments from people as to how well this worked for them also. No one have ever said it didn’t work for them. Just saying.
