everyone knows its a waste and noone wants to host it, so therefore, why dont just everyone just take TURNS to host it to make it fair since noone wants to host it
It is fine to construct new venues, but then they should be built to replace stadiums that have reached end of life or will otherwise be a valuable addition to the city. Small countries should not want to host the Olympics, but if they insist then at least spread the stadiums over different cities (unless the country has just one major city anyway).
Atlanta native here. Fulton County Stadium was torn down a year after the Olympics after 30 years of use as a multi-sports venue. Centennial Olympic Stadium (1996) was converted into a baseball stadium for the Braves, which they used for 19 years until it was redesigned as a college football stadium for GA State University and is still in use.
Correct I was there too. I watched Cuba play baseball at turner field. I also went to the last 2 NLCS games in Fulto County stadium. Jeff Blouser walk off homerun. Good times
Another thing that annoys me is that most of the Olympians are not well compensated for their dedication to their sport. Most of the money generated from the Olympics goes towards officials, businesses and the IOC etc.
I mean to be fair I hate the Olympics and consider it a waste of time and money which only exists to fuel egos but yeah a little compensation isn't bad its just once the Olympics is done most of the athletes go back to being irrelevant if they weren't in well known professional sports
This time paris have restricted the new construction by using temporary structure this is a nice initiative for making it less carbon print for the event. Its a nice dicission.
Like at Melbourne 🇦🇺 Olympic 1956 they use Melbourne Cricket Ground or the “G” they upgrade the venue and still using it. The old 1956 pool still using as trying for an AFL club. Sydney Olympic park doesn’t too many use it many the Royal Ester Show and NRL in the winner few time for t/20 but where the “G” get have AFL in the winter and cricket in the summer and cornstarch’s at time
The Olympics were a noble sporting venture. Now it is more of a visual spectacle. And every cycle gets worse, as designers scrape the barrel for ideas for more spectacle. Plenty of people make plenty of money - but not the cities, so much.
Not true. Barcelona, Atlanta, London & Paris have done well with venues (utilising existing or temporary or building needed). The stadium in Atlanta had been there for 30 years already. London didn’t have a single competition level 50metre pool in a city of 13+ million. Paris hardly built anything new. For many of these cities the clean-up of areas and/or rapid investment in infrastructure is what matters and is most of the bill. For some countries - they want the spectacle and either have a 1) super strong or 2) super weak government that enables the spend. If it’s done well then it isn’t a waste at all. Paris was marvellous!!
The games have grown too big. They have been adding events to the Olympics and require more and more venues. It is hard not to lose money just because of the sheer scale of the Olympics game.
There have been many journalist trying to uncover the financial laundering for hosting the Olympics. I’ve seen articles discussing both Sochi’s Games and even Paris.
The olympic park in Munich is an essential part of the city, literally built on top of the rubble of WW2. The 1972 Olympics also gave Munich its U- and S-bahn transportation systems. For the ciry of Munich, the 1972 Olympics were definitely the right event at the right time. (Unfortunately horrible things happened during those Olympics.)
For Atlanta one was abandoned because the college that owned it lost money so they had to close it other wise they did a great job. For transportation they borrowed lots of busses from other cities like mine. You also have to take in account that there're way more venues now VS then
12:32 here you show the Olympic Stadium from Munich 1972. This stadium was used by Bayern Munich since the 1970s for more than 30 years as a football/soccer-stadium until they built their own stadium in 2005 (Allianz Arena). Olympic stadium in Munich is still in use today for big open air concerts, european championships in athletics 2022 etc. Paris 2024 with the temporary stadiums is a really good system, some months after the games it's an empty field again and those stands will be used at other events. The swimming arena in Paris is also temporary built in a rugby or concert venue (Taylor Swift played her Paris-Shows in May 2024 in the same stadium 😉👍
Since USA has some many athletes and we watch so many things, it isn't much of a waste when one of our cities host. Europe does okay with it too. Asia and rest of Americas? Not so much. It would be a colossal waste in Africa or Middle East. But that's up to those cities and countries to decide, not the Olympic Games themselves. I'm sure plenty in Rio and Brazil were proud to host it even at the costs.
So... Honestly, I see a certain misunderstanding about some regions of the world when it comes to this subject. Taking Brazil as an example, the country is the 7th most populous on the planet, with the 8th largest economy. The city of Rio de Janeiro is the 18th most populous on the planet, with more population than London, Paris or Los Angeles. Brazil was the 6th largest delegation to the 2024 Olympics and has one of the largest viewers of the games in the world. Regarding the 2016 Olympics, Rio and Brazil's view of the games in general was very positive, despite some problems, especially in the immediate future after the games, especially since they were held in the midst of a huge political crisis in the country. Today, there is much talk about how the games improved the city's transportation infrastructure with the expansion of the metro, the creation of the VLT and BRT. And how the legacy in general was well thought out. The nomadic sports facilities were all converted as if they were part of a project. The remaining sports facilities are mostly well used and maintained. And the interest in major events does not diminish in the country, as the Women's Football World Cup will be here in 2027 and São Paulo is the likely host of the 2031 Pan American Games, with the idea of São Paulo being a candidate for 2040 or 2044 increasingly strong.

I can appreciate the efforts Paris made on the infrastructure, however they failed to consider sustainability in so many other aspects, from promoting nft (which are ridicoulously energy intensive and basically a dead market anyway) and dealing with clothing brands that are either known to be unsustainable or completely opaque regarding their material's sources and supposedly ethical practices, to still encouraging the same hyperconsumerism that comes with every olympics with things like sponsored gifts of randomn things athletes already have and don't need more of, merch being sold everywhere with no regard for sustainability, Olympic limited edition goods made with no standard of sustainability, etc. It's a step, but them promoting themselves as "THE Olympics of sustainability" is one hell of a stretch.
