Around 1800 there was hardly anything left of the island. But thanks to dikes and polders, Ameland is what it is today: a large island with an incredible number of plant and bird species. The island has four idyllic villages, Hollum, Ballum, Nes and Buren, each with their own atmosphere will win your heart. About 3700 people live there.
