- Here I take a look at an awesome John Scofield line from Miles Davis's album "Decoy". This line showed me just how much of an influence Scofield was on a lot of the fusion guys that came after him.

The hardest thing about these kinds of modulations is playing them in a way that doesn’t sound disjunct. Getting the phrases nice and smooth so the contrasting tonalities sound inviting is what I’m still trying to work out…
Good lesson.
Yeah, that’s the eternal struggle: to have such a strong command of a concept that it can just flow out musically.
Excellent
Anyone with an Ibz jazz box and a Sega shirt is aces in my book! Great video man.
Haha, thanks man!
This was a very cool lesson, thanks for posting and keep up the good work!
Thanks! I appreciate you taking the time to watch!
GOOD JOB, WELL DONE
Fantastic!!! 👏 ❤️ the ‘outside’ lessons
Thanks!
Great line, thanks so much. Love your channel!
Thanks so much!
Great lick & lesson Mike!
Thanks man!
Great lesson ty
Glad you enjoyed!
The best tshirt ive ever seen and well great video. 🤘
Thanks!
Thank you👍
Absolutely man! Thanks for watching!
Great stuff! Hope you will have more content on John Scofield. Big fan of his work.
Thanks for checking out my video! I have three newer Sco videos that have come out in the last month or two, and will definitely be making more!
@@mbacarellaguitar I second the sco love
I was copping a Joe Pass lick from another UA-camr and Joe was using melodic minor off the tritone in a ii V I. So in G, A Dorian over the ii, C# melodic minor over the V then resolve normally to the I, in this case G. Same idea in a different context. Sounds wild! Great lesson, Mike. Your videos and playing are great. Thanks.
That's a really cool concept! I'm going to start messing with that.
That sounds so cool! I love outside sounds. Do you know any other substitutions for the melodic minor?
Never mind... I found your other videos!!! Cheers.
Nice lick, I'm always looking for those good "jumping off points" to make outside playing sound hip rather than just... outside lol. Nice tone btw
Thanks man. Scofield is the king of "jumping off points"
Love the feelin of the sound
Me too!
@@mbacarellaguitar what is the feeling though I can’t describe it in word’s
@@bitcoinman9202 I would describe it as tension and resolution.
@@mbacarellaguitar kind of
Reminds me of dozing off and then waking back up
There's definitely a whole note scale in there together with the minor.
The melodic minor scale has four consecutive whole steps after the 3rd, which is why you are noticing it so much!
Yes! And it's a great way to get to use the whole note scale without sounding "airy-fairy" 😊😊😊
Hey Mike what John Scofield album or song did you get that lick from. You sound great
Hey! It comes from Miles Davis’s record Decoy. I believe it’s from the title track!
Maybe he thinks Ab7 to Am That´s pretty common
I honestly never considered that, but now that you say it it is super obvious! Eb Melodic Minor works equally well over that chord!
How is Ab7 to Am common? Bb7 to Am is common because the Bb7 is the tritone sub of the five chord, but how does Ab7 to Am make sense?
can't hear audio! good lesson, audio sucks
Sorry about that! Over the last two years I’ve made some progress with audio quality in my lessons. This was one of my first, so I was still learning quite a bit.
