I love these old black and white movies, they're the best. What cracks me up, is the fact, you ever notice how, in these mystery suspense movies, they always take place at night, after dark, and there's always a thunder boomer and lightening storm, with never ending pouring rains? I love it, becuz it helps set the mood, for a great "what's gonna happen next" scenes and scenarios. And I love all the old antique furniture, the rugs and carpeting, the fireplace, etc ... it takes you back to a whole nother world than what the world is like nowadays
Also makes you notice how social we were before TV, and the Internet. There's a person talking in nearly every scene!
And not talking on their phones.
My sentiments exactly to the top comment
You forgot to mention dumbwaiters and secret panels!!!!
I make Alexa play thunderstorms every night to lull me to sleep. I blame these films. 😂
Storms do seem to provide an excellent backdrop for a murder/mystery. Poor Andy played the part very well! Thanks for posting!
I love these old films, but there was a time that I would not watch them. I now have an appreciation for a more stable time. Life was much simpler then now.
@Charles Anthony ?
@jfsfrnd You could have owned a cell phone.

Many people go back to the classics for this very reason. As I certainly have as well. Although, I don't care for the Trump commercial at the beginning of the film. He is the reason so many are so discouraged.
This is what we call.....getting older.....there are thing we did no like when we were younger and stupid, life was different then, a totally different ...world...
Great movie for a stormy night. The storm's sound, rain and wind effects are plentiful throughout the movie for great atmosphere. Well directed anddefinitely enjoyable!
Agreed!

Yes, I love the 'dark and stormy nights' movies. Perfect settiing for heinous deeds and mysteries!
My power is out now because of a bad thunderstorm. My phone will probably go out before the movie is over!
cut out the lights and have popcorn ready.
Let's reissue all of the classics. There is nothing in theaters worth watching today.
AGREE 100000 PERCENT
Your so right. Isn't it great?
EXACTLY!!! I've been saying that same thing since college...in the 80's. The movies and TV now is absolute crap.
I'm working on that. You're right.
I agree 100% 😎
It's good seeing Zucco in this sort of role. I wish he'd made a "Black Raven" series.
More entertaining and engaging than most movies. Great Dialogue and shadow effects and cars. 30s and 40s cars are/were the coolest.
Zucco always rose above the material that he was given. Enjoy watching him.
max b Yes, he was a fine actor indeed.
"The Suave Malevolence."
i saw this with my mom in the 60's. great to be able to see it again. cant beat the old b/w cinema films.
Thank you for sharing also and keeping these Gems 💎 Alive ! Beautiful quality .
What a great classic, the kind I used to watch on Saturday mystery movies on tv in NY, my mom and brother are gone now but when I see movies like these I'm a little girl watching a mystery movie with those l loved the most.
I feel the exact same way whenever I watch an old Shirley Temple movie. NYC in the 70's watching afternoon movies with my mom during lazy weekends. Feel like a schoolgirl all over again. Sigh.
Bittersweet memories. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Yes I know what you mean I have the same memories with my family, wow those were great times.. I often think about those days.
I did the same in the 60s in Queens…NYC
❤️
This movie was excellent, far better than I was expecting. George Zucco made the film though, what a great character with a history. His character and auberge deserved a sequel!
“Why would a woman want to break in to my room?” “ yeah I guess you’re right” lol
POOR BYRON
Just good quick paced entertainment, no long drawn out dramas, no long searching stupid stares. Lots of action. Without blowing up everything in town, and riddling everything with machine guns. Todays movies are really stupid , with little or no thought.
What an incredible movie, the looks the actors give each other say it all!
Some of the lines were great :
He's just like the phone....dead
@@joelonzello4189 Absolutely, the deadpan dialogue is wonderful.
I’m thankful for turner classic movies. I love watching those old movies, more so the mystery movies.
I like to hear the wind blow through a screen door, it gives that mystery sound.
This is such an enjoyable movie! I have watched it several times, and find it,always so entertaining! Thank you,TCM,for showing this film!
This is surreal. I'm watching this movie which was filmed before my grandparents were born. This fricking pandemic is making me watch these blank and white movies, and I'm falling in love with them.
many deserve to be forgotten; but this one holds up superbly
B & W films, including this one, are the Bomb...Sherlock Holmes, Charlie Chan, Mr Moto, the Crime Doctor series, Dr Kildare films....& films like Stalag 17, From Here to Eternity, The Apartment, & countless others. They all stand - up very well.
Good for you. The best!
I was born in December of 1943..I love TCM and these films
Hero of the stupid.
thanks for saving these films. I love old movies.
Thank you for the great movie! A fun distraction during this horrible Corona. Sad day when real life is more frightening than murder on a dark and stormy night.....Thanks TCM!❤
Well said.. seriously.. "if it were possible to cross, you don't think I'd be standing here!"
Well said.
Truth is stranger than fiction
Corona is truly frightening because you do not know the end.
I hope it ends soon
So many valuable lives good people lost.
Till then take care
Stay home even if it is boring
And no going out without a mask
Do not ignore any minor symptoms because the rascal virus gives no chance at all if it reaches the lower respiratory tract
Corona is easily prevented but if allowed entry into our system it is fatal
Such a terrible disease never ever happened in human history where the whole world is affected.
Praying for everyone.
Watch movies at home to keep the disturbed mind engaged.
Glenn Strange. Sam the bartender from the long running series Gunsmoke. And here as Andy at 6'5" you can imagine this big guy as the Frankenstein monster cast in the role three times for Universal Studios from 1944 through 1948. Frankie's last appearance was in Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein. Roles in hundreds of films, credited and uncredited. Mostly western roles. Born in Weed, New Mexico 08/18/1899. Passed away 09/20/1973 in Los Angeles, California. Thanks and R.I.P. Mr. Strange...
Sheriff is played by Charlie (Charles) Middleton. MING the Merciless in the Flash Gordon classic movies.
One of our favorites, too bad it wasn't remastered. Glenn Strange is awesome as the bumbling clerk and well, George Zucco is great in every movie! this movie has it all, rainy night, stranded strangers, murder, theft, thugs, a dumb sheriff, and a cpl of good chuckles thanks to Strange.
wow glen strange, who knew he'd be comic relief? played the Monster for goodness sake(frankenstein)
he's wonderful in this, and as you said, always count on zucco
Zucco is always worth watching even if the film is weak. He will always be in the hearts of horror fans..
Yet another "Classic" reason to subscribe to this channel. Without fail they provide quality uploads of great classic movies. Well done I say!
I love this movie. So much suspense and the acting is A+. Great HD quality, too, like all your movies!
I love that I can find movies like this here on UA-cam. If you haven't watched this one yet, definitely do!! This is an excellent movie!!
This is a pretty good one. Smarter than most of these old 40's movies. And it's way back in 1943!
Another great mystery! The rainstorm kept my nerves on edge! Thx again Timeless Classics!
This one is one of the better b&w movies I have seen. Still beats the crap out of the modern stuff. :D
You´re right. But the good news is, that there are still a lot of old movies which can be watched at UA-cam :-)
Timeless Classic Films Im so thrilled channels like this exist! Thank you so much for bringing these gems to us!!
I would love to bring some of the 1940's Movie's Back!
What?! You do not like super hero slug fests? I agree and seldom attend modern movies. The vulgarity and action CG orientation are unappealing.
AGREE 1000 PERCENT!
Wanda McKay was a model and was the Chesterfield girl. She also represented TWA. She was married to Hoagy Carmichael, the song writer, during the last 4 years of his life. She had a child from a previous marriage during WW II.
Hoagy Charmichael is from Bloomington Indiana and use to play the piano at a pub there long ago. I believe the pub is still there too.
Cool facts!
Thank you for that.
Hoagie hails from one of my hometowns.
Love Hoagy's voice.
Creepy Cool from the good ole days!! So fun! Thank you
Back for the 3rd time~ it's dark, and raining heavily out, and this is a perfect movie for my evening! Woops~ I forgot the popcorn! I always enjoy Noel Madison~ great in "hoodlum" roles.
Love it when Zucco teams up with Sondergaard in some classic horror flics. TIMELESS is classic! Great finds!
The Sheriff was Ming, the Emperor of the Universe in Flash Gordon. Andy was Sam the bartender in Gunsmoke.
How could you leave out Andy was The Monster/ Frankenstein in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
Yes! The vilest creature ever to ooze-forth from the Galaxy - MING THE MERCILESS - Emperor of the Known Universe!! OK fine, whatever, but the real worry all had and do-still was WHO (or worse WHAT) was/is reining over the unknown one!?! To-date, this remains unaddressed subject-wise and requires discovery!
Yes, loved Sam!
Such a good movie to sleep to, constant rain and thunder, isolated location, murder mystery
I almost didn't click on this one, but I'm so glad I did! Thank you!
There was never a Suave Malevolence that was so malevolent, and so suave, as was our favorite of the sort than George Zucco !!
He could cut you down to proper small size with a mere glance!
Unique! Grand! Incomparable! Inimitable!
:+:
The man playing Andy is the actor who also played Sam the bartender in Gunsmoke.
Yes, sure is.
And the man playing the sheriff was also on ..."Flash Gordon series in the thirties,, he played the part of...."MING the EMPEROR"
George Zucco's "one-liners" are priceless!!! 👍👍👍👍
So great to watch the old movies so much better than what's being made today...
An oldie but goody. I'm a George Zucco fan so I enjoyed this one.
Thank you for posting and sharing!!
George Zucco is absolutely hilarious in this. Love his one-liners!! 😆
The actor playing the sheriff was 69 years old at the time of this movie. Just one more awesome thing about this film!
He also played Ming the Merciless in the Flash Gordon serials.
@@Makeaneffortfilms Did he also play Tonto on "The Lone Ranger"?
@@johnvono5787 JAY SIVERHEELS
69 years old? But his hair was black as a raven!
@@reynaldoflores4522 I see what you did there! Bravo😂
Another Good mystery w George Zucco, who I've always liked! The plot was fun& @ times, scary! Thanks4 showing it!
Watch the first scene when Andy goes out with his rain hat on backwards. I guess nobody on set had worn foul weather gear. In the next sequence when he returns, the hat is on correctly. It's hard to imagine a time before television when people would go to the movies almost as frequently as we turn on the TV or watch UA-cam each evening. Thank you, Timeless, for this flick!
markcoveryourassets I saw that right off. Strange grew up in west Texas, near where my folks are from, he probably never even saw a rain hat before this movie. I have never seen a real one of that type. Even so, when he put it on I said to myself, "Rains gonna run down his neck." Then he flipped the inside out collar of the coat up over the hat making a funnel down his neck. No wonder he complained about never getting dry.
His accent was fairly noticeable for someone on the Canadian border.
Can you guys explain, since the rain-hat got your attention ::
What (?) happened to _Andy's_ rain-hat & rain-coat when he came running through the door w / news about ::
"There's someone down in the cellar !"
_He was just at the cellar-door wearing the rain-gear._
Yes, that was before the wealthy started making money off the people, as they do now. Since 45 took office it's only going to get worse. He looks out for the wealthy. Especially in taxes. He's such a corrupt man.
@@cliffgaither LoL.....The killer took it. Good catch.

Opposed to Biden he’s a perfect man 2024
George Zucco deserves to be known beyond those of us who like B movies.
👍
Thank you for the upload. Love this movie.
RBM Cartoon Network
The " ZUCCSTER " is in top form in this one ! Oneof my all time favorites.
Aren't we being too informal, my dear chap? 😂
Thanks. a wonderful day of classics.
I'm shocked! I had no idea other's are into old movies like me. I love them. I've watched all Charlie Chan and Thin Man movies.
I'd love to buy a ticket and sit and eat my popcorn and watch these great old films.
Very enjoyable! Thx for posting.
I came to see Glenn Strange. Man, did that guy have range. A criminally underrated actor.
He was hilarious in MASTER MINDS.
Never call someone with a gun a "fool"!
my first thought
Decent movie. I was disappointed we didn't get more information about the Raven's history and motives.
George Zucco deserved awards for all his work. He was not recognized in his field. He's fabulous, can't touch his style. Respectfully frank
Byron Foulger was in more films than anyone I know of and always played quirky types really well.
It was a dark and stormy night. .....I believe snoopy must have written this.
😂
A common thing in most noir movies is that when people enter or exit a car, they slide across the front bench seat to the passengers side..cool!
No center post.
Love these old movies
To DAN CORDOSI - George Zucco had played a good guy before: in "Dead Men Walk," also released in 1943,
he played a sort "Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde" duo role, with Dwight Frye -- 12 years after Frye was in "Frankenstein,"
in '31 -- the year George Zucco's film career began. ("Dead Men Walk," was also Dwight Frye's farewell role.)
Wow! That's really interesting info, Pete. Thanks!
Love the classics
I Love Black and White movies. The movies back then had great characters. And it didn’t take two or more hours to find out what was happening!
A time where Hollywood was brilliant!
Great movie!! It is now October, perfect timing!!
Love the old PRC movies, LOVE George Zucco one of the unheralded greats of horror
Interesting movie, surprised who was the killer. Thanks for sharing this with us 😊
Brilliant!! those two men on those steps scared to death made me laugh to the point of tears LOL A great movie thank you for posting
55:40 Judge: "And for working with The Raven I hereby sentence you, Andy, to 20 years hard labor…parking cars in the rain!”
gracias por subir la peli, thanks for upload the movie
Terrific movie. I really like the way everyone runs toward the sound of gunfire. I guess those folks fearless!
Loved George Zucco and particularly his classic lines that raise this b film to an A
Did anyone notice the raven on the mantle? Turn the head forward and change the base and it's the Maltese Falcon.
Nothing is like the fire hose rain from the old movies😂
Fantastic! Nothing like a torrential downpour, at night to set the backdrop for a murder mystery. Love the classics; more style, fashion and drama than today's movies.
***SPOILER ALERT***
Just wished the proprietor didn't die, couldn't he been only injured? Just shot in the arm? And how could the sheriff be such a noodlehead? The proprietor had way more sense!!!
Thanks!! TCM for the upload!!
💕💕💕💕
Thank you for sharing. So many actors whose faces are familar. Glen Strange, among other things went on to be the bartender on the tv series, "Gunsmoke". On the "Lone Ranger" tv series he was the villian responsible for killing all the Texas Rangers EXCEPt one. UA-cam is a treasure trove. Happy viewing from Las Vegas, NV October 01, 2018
George Zucco playing a good guy well I'll be darn.
dan cordosi Still had a gun in the desk,as always.Check out Dead Men Walk,in which good guy George Zucco pops 5 shots at bad guy...George Zucco.
He was great in a Charlie Chan movie
One of the many reasons I enjoy these older movies better than the modern garbage today, is they do not shake the cameras. I have never understood the allure of the shaking of the cameras and I refuse to watch any movie that employs this moronic tactic.
Great movie .....watched Jul2019

I like these old movies they are better than the garbage they are putting out
Awesome movie. Loved it !!!!!!!! Thank you
First time I've seen Glen Strange in a comic role. He was very good in it. Best known as Sam the bartender on 'Gunsmoke' and as the Frankenstein monster in at least one of the Universal horror films.
Wow! I'll try to check this out tonight.
Thank you tcm!!! Keep it up with these old black and whites. I haven't seen this movie since i was a little kid watching it with my parents!! And i'm 63 years old!!!
1st lesson of revenge: avoid long, long speeches and explanations to the asshole that set you up to begin with. He already knows why you're there!!!
It's nice to that these movies didn't have "certain" words in them like today!☝️
Glenn Strange, of course, went on to play the Frankenstein monster in one movie.
The whole place littered with dead bodies at the end! You sure Shakespeare didn't write this one?
Great flick! Thanks for the upload!
Such a good thriller
thank you very entertaining movie.
I Love love love these old movies
Decent movie. Too bad they didn't have Roy William Neill directing.(Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes). He was known for directing films with meticulously lit scenes with carefully layered shadows that would become the style of film noir in the late 1940s.
This was excellent! Zucco was great! Script & actors were all great! So much better than the crap I’ve watched this entire week-- the movie houses need to reissue every excellent old movie there is-- people would flock to them- providing you would run the films longer than 2 days or a week!
02:19 "Why do I always have to go out in the rain?...why can't he go for once? It's Andy this, Andy that...."
06:56 "What the hell, again?!"
13:30 "Oh for the love of....why don't I just stay out there:"
George Zucco is the epitome of “calm cool and collected”
good movie thanks for this entertainment
A very young Glen Strange - the bartender in Gunsmoke is one of the featured actors in this film
For the longest time I wondered about that big fish hanging on the stairway wall. Then it dawned on me, it's a red herring With four known criminals and a total of six suspects there were already enough of them.
Interesting camera movement at 3:12 as Whitey moves left ( to his right)
the camera moves almost 180* to the right, almost a horizontal circular motion while focused on Whitey at the center.
A mystery why they show the register when people sign in , they scribble so small it's unreadable
Ms McKay was a bit stiff and seemed to be reading unfamiliar lines a few times she ran out of breath once leading to an awkward pause in one bit of dialogue. At 48:50 it's a bad match of a bad double for Byron Foulger as he and Glen Strange tumble down the stairs. This thing was worth watching for Foulger and Strange alone.
