聽到潮州話真是親切
The mom’s experience is different than that of her contemporaries in Java. A middle school kid could afford to bounce from one government office to another but a person with responsibilities could not. Even badminton players who won gold for Indonesia like Ivana Lie had difficulties getting her citizenship papers. Lusy’s experience is rare.
Almost all Chinese Indonesians changed their names. My friends who did not were ridiculed at school by the teachers. Even the civics (PMP) teacher mocked their names saying they were not patriotic when in reality their parents didn’t have the money to jump the queue , which was very long.
Maybe the huaren experience in Pontianak is different, but in Java the Chinese of my generation (Gen X) definitely suffered from racial discrimination.
This lady’s experience is not representative at all of the general chinese indonesian population

Someone from 🇲🇾
During the colonial era, Chinese Indonesians were divided into two distinct groups:
1 *Peranakan*
These are the descendants of Chinese men who immigrated to Indonesia and married local women. The Peranakan Chinese have deeply integrated into Indonesian society. They speak local languages, enjoy Indonesian cuisine, and wear traditional Indonesian clothing. Despite these cultural assimilations, they retain Chinese names, practice traditional Chinese religions, and uphold Chinese customs.
2 *Totok*
This group comprises descendants of later Chinese immigrants, both men and women. The Totok Chinese have preserved a stronger connection to their Chinese roots. They typically speak various Chinese dialects, such as Teochew, Hokkien, Hakka, and Cantonese, wear traditional Chinese attire, and adhere more closely to Chinese traditions.
In Java, most Chinese Indonesians are Peranakan, and even before Indonesia’s independence, they generally did not speak any Chinese dialects. In contrast, in Borneo, the majority of Chinese Indonesians are Totok, and many are fluent in Chinese dialects like Teochew and Hakka.
During the Indonesian New Order era, the government suppressed Chinese cultural expressions, viewing them as potential ties to communism. This suppression was particularly felt in Java, where Chinese culture was publicly celebrated only during significant occasions such as the Lunar New Year and the Lantern Festival. Outside of Java, Chinese cultural practices continued more openly.
This lady’s individual experience reflects her bright and optimistic outlook, as she never felt discriminated against. This doesn’t mean that racial discrimination against ethnic Chinese doesn’t exist in Indonesia, just that it varies from person to person and is more nuanced than the sweeping perception held by many outside Indonesia, where all indigenous Indonesians and government officials are thought to harbor animosity towards ethnic Chinese.
As we look to the future, we hope Indonesia will continue to progress towards inclusivity, where no one faces discrimination. Whether you are an indigenous Indonesian, Chinese Indonesian, Indian Indonesian, Arab Indonesian, or of any other heritage, we are all Indonesians.

Heng Ie Kheng is a beautiful name. I would rather keep my Chinese name and teach others how to say it rather than change it. This also opens up more opportunities for cultural exchange. I can say your non-Chinese name, and you can say my Chinese name. No double standard.
Yes, this is a double standard. Because Indonesians have had Dutch names, Portuguese names, Arab names, Sanskrit names, Batak names, Minahasan names, Balinese names, etc for hundreds to thousands of years with no issue. Yes, these names have definitely been butchered. Look no further than how Indonesians pronounce David (Dapit). But so what? They've persisted and become accepted by the public. But why can't Chinese names be accepted to the same degree? Actually, they were accepted for centuries until Orde Baru. So even though people "willingly" changed their names at the time, there is definitely more to it than that.
你媽媽的父母應該都是印尼出生的。也是先成為印尼公民。因為你父母還是中國公民的話會很難換到印尼籍。在中國或者海外出生也比較難成為這裡的公民。你媽媽很幸運吧。很多新客家庭（第1-2代）都吃苦了。

The difference between Pontianak and other big cities in Java and Sumatra, is the number of Chinese as a percentage of the population. In Pontianak, the Chinese are a significant minority in a pluralistic society. In Java’s big cities, the Chinese are a small minority so it’s very easy for the majority to bully. When I was growing up it was common to be called names by the pribumi kids in the street otw to or from school. “Cina makan babi”, “Cina mindering” were common ones. Threats of being beat up were also common.
As I became an adult I learned I was an easy target for bribery (pungli), whether by the traffic police, the immigration and customs officer at the airport, etc etc. It is ignorant for Lusy to claim the Chinese didn’t experience any discrimination. Maybe she led a very sheltered life.
The freedom of expression is not the courage to go on radio and become an announcer. But the right to criticize the government when you disagree with their policy. In this regard it wasn’t just the Chinese, but the entire Indonesian people had none during the Suharto era. What Lusy said about this subject is disingenuous.
Yes we could go to school, work, etc. even became rich. But the Chinese in Java definitely experienced several traumatic experiences including riots in 1998. It is delusional to claim otherwise.

華人改名不也是蘇哈托的政策嗎? 我都有改名的文件
如果查 Keputusan Presidium Kabinet No. 127/U/Kep/1966，其實上面沒有 “強迫”一定要改。我之前也很好奇為何我爸媽有些朋友都沒有改名，後來才發現原因。
不是必須改名。只不過你不改名的話很多事情都會更麻煩。譬如做護照、申請入學、開公司、等等。以前很多印尼華人羽球員都不可以出國代表印尼。說到底更容易成為中國公民代表中國隊。

It is easy to say you can easily learn Chinese during the Suharto times.
But in reality, when Chinese is banned in schools and Chinese media is banned, the standard of Chinese will naturally drop until now, most Chinese Indonesian cannot speak, read or write in Chinese.
My Indonesian friend has said he will not give his children Chinese names. That's the outcome.

排華政策影響到全國。不過每個地方的情況都不一樣。要看當地社會和市政府怎麼樣。暴亂在幾個城市發生罷了。並不是在每一個省、市、鎮、村都發生。
