In this video essay we look at Brian De Palma's Carrie, the ground-breaking horror film from 1976, starring Sissy Spacek. In the second of our New Hollywood Series, we discuss how De Palma combines the suspense techniques of Alfred Hitchcock (Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo) with the self awareness of directors like Jean-Luc Godard (Breathless, Contempt).

We can all agree Brian De Palma is the greatest, right?

@@TheDiscardedImage will check it out. Love that movie. It's like De Palma is mocking both Hitchcock and himself.

You had a shot from Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. Wonder what your thoughts are about it.

Love De Palma's movies, specially from the 70's and early 80's. Carrie is one of my favorite movies. Great essay.

The discarded image is the platonic ideal of youtube. Such stunning work every freaking time. Instead we get cats farting with millions of views. It's not just. It's not fair. I do feel like each episode is dropped specifically with me in mind though.

I never really knew anything about Carrie, but I got the sense I would like it somehow. This definitely seems like a great movie. I am also not into horror at all.

if you're not into horror then Carrie might be a good film for you - despite it falling into the horror category i didn't find it scary at all but more of a teen fairy-tale gone wrong. Sissy Spacek's performance is definitely worth checking out, she should have won the Oscar.

just a quick note! when we have our periods the blood does not go down like that that is way too much blood , it starts with little speck! but it would never slide down the leg like that,

you have to give Alfred Hitchcock more credit since De Palma 'borrows' endlessly from Hitchcock

We haven't ironed that all out yet. It's tough narrowing them down as there's so many great ones. Even when you select a director, say like Robert Altman, it's tough to choose whether to do MASH or McCabe, or The Long Goodbye, or Nashville, or Three Women!
