Meditate while you still have youth
Don’t delay, friend, don’t wait till the end
The four stages of life described in Indian philosophy are popularly understood to mean that inner work, meditation or satsang are literally a ‘last resort’, to be postponed diligently till old age while the duties and pleasures of the householder’s life hold sway in youth. Kabir turns this scheme upside down! He says the best time to meditate is now, while your body is still fit and willing. In old age, with no prior practice, will a body racked with pain, or a mind without patience, buckle down to it?

In 2011, we invited Mahesha Ram and his troupe to Bangalore for a 4-day ‘Learning with Kabir’ workshop designed as an immersive retreat for educators and artists. Mahesha ji would draw the participants into the spirit of satsang in the early mornings and late evenings. During the rest of the day, some of us sat with him and recorded new and old songs from his very deep repertoire.
Meditative and mesmeric - these are the qualities of Mahesha Ramji’s music, as is evident in this video. Unhurried and not in an eager rush to please the public, Mahesha Ramji slows you down, and compels you to step into his rhythm. He belongs to Chhatangadh village near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, and represents the folk style of the Meghwal community, who are the traditional carriers of the poetry of many bhakti poets including Kabir, keeping it alive through a powerful oral tradition.
