Hey Max, as a life-long Contax/Carl Zeiss user I can recommend one thing. Never sell that lens! The 35 1.4, 85 1.4 and 50 1.4 were back in the day and still are the best in class manual 35mm slr lenses. When I was studying photography in the 80's shooting models in studio, my photography instructor was blown away by my Zeiss 85 1.4 because it showed every imperfection on the model's skin, too sharp! For the price, can't beat that 50 Planar. Have seen your other videos, you've got some great portraits. Cheers...

I just stoped shoting digital after ive tried this camera... Is faster to use then your smartphone, big as an mirrorless m4/3, batteries just goes on and on... Used with projector lenses.. Its outclass any camera i used, from m4/3 mirrorless, analog OM, m42 manual cameras, analog rangefinders...

My first and only (aside from P&S’s) current camera was also a Canon A1, so hearing this review practically made the decision for me. An aesthetic yet practical camera that isn’t extortionate…the F3 can wait 😅

The 167 is a bit of an oddity in the Contax manual Focus slr range, as most of the contaxes used dials instead of the slider and buttons approach, I guess that is why is doesn't seem to have been very well liked, and they seemed to drop that approach. I suspect makes it more of a bargain. I think it was the first of the slr range to have spot metering in addition to centre weighted, which is handy . Excellent lenses and a good viewfinder and a good high maximum shutter speed. The program modes only work with the later MM lenses. Most of the contax models can suffer from mirror slip, which is repairable but a nuisance when it happens.

I’ve tried the Contax 159mm with a 50 f1.7 and it was great. My friend gave me the camera but sold the lens for $300. Looking back I should of bought it. I do have a G1 and T2 as well. Love the Zeiss lenses.

Just got one from a local camera store for 230 euros including the Zeiss Planar 50mm 1.7. The camera feels like a tank and i just started taking it through the first roll. Really impressed with the body, and although the controls are indeed a bit confusing, I usually stick to Aperture control and shoot away.

I had almost the same experience to yours. Wanted something compact for the photography I do, and have tried different point and shoots, and realized it wasn't for me... because of the autofocus, and I just can't appreciate the 28mm/35mm wide range lens that most of these cameras have. So I used Nikon SLR for several years, but didn't like the cameras/handling/noise. Found a 167mt with the planar 50 1.4 in a shop where I live in Hong Kong and have never looked back. Now I rotate the 167mt with an RX and RTS with also the 45mm tessar and have had no need to search for other camera setups. You also shoot outside with the Planar 50mm without a hood/filter? I like the lens so much that I can't force myself to put anything on it, while at the same fearing for its "safety"

    • @mmh53
      @mmh53  4 роки тому

I totally understand you :) it's a great system, especially for the price point! No I don'T use a hood or anything, I am usually not so picky with my gear :D

While the 167 MT is a very decent camera, I have two of them, I don't care for fidelity buttons and LCD display interfaces, preferring dials. The Contax RX is a far superior camera, mostly because it has the best damped mirror action of an film camera that I have used.

Contax 167mt is a great camera! It’s underrated compared to other Contax cameras. I like the Yashica FX-3 Super w/50 1.7 Planar when traveling light. I’d really like to pick up a S2 or Aria someday!

I have the CONTAX S2b and the Yashica FX-3 Super 2000. Honestly, the CONTAX is a great little camera but I'm always going for the Yashica when I want to head out the house with a nice light simple camera.

Hi Max, the *best* Contax SLRs are the RTS III (1990) and the Contax AX (1996) very late models. If you're a manual Film Advance Lover like myself, i'd suggest the Contax RTS I/II, the Contax 159 MM as lowcost Alternative. Being shooting Contax since the later 80s. Update: If you can afford it, a Contax S2 (1992, spot metering) or the black S2b (1994, Center-weight Metering) as an all mechanical Body. Whileas the former ones are being excellent gear, i dislike autom. Film Transport, or Auto xy Features.

One of my favourite cameras ( got about 60) when fitted with the Planar MMJ lens it invokes all of the programs , shutter speeds to 4000th/sec. It will work with Yashica lenses just fine but not with all the features.

In my camera the aperture values are messed up it shows 8 for 0.8, 9.5 for 1.4, and 16 for every other aperture on the lens. Is there a way to fix this?

I have it since the early 90's, came out into 1986. Of course NOT the Best, but a good one. The Infos inside the OVF, about Shutterspeed & Aperture are nice, so is the LCD Display. Negative: Auto Film Winding (Film Photography for myself implies a manual Film Advance Lever, to cock the Film, always) but i do like my Contax and Yashica SLRs, shooting with them for >3 Decades. Missing on the 167mt: Shutter Speed Dial, Exposure Comp Wheel.

Contax 35mm cameras are all great. My order of preference (of the Contax I use):
    - G2 with the 45/2
    - 167MT with the pancake Zeiss 45/2.8
    - AX with data back with Zeiss 50/1.4
    - T2
Best allrounder: 167MT for all the reasons mentionned in the video - thanks for the review by the way :-)

I love the ability to imprint apperture and shutter speed information between the frames. I only know two 35mm format cameras that can do that: Nikon F2 and Contax AX.
