I work at a toy store and we sell yoyo factory yo-yos. I'll have you know kids come in everyday talking about you. I just restarted my yoyo journey, learning some advanced tricks and I'm trying to spread that knowledge to kids as well. I definitely use what you've taught here to teach the younger generation. Every time a kid buys a yoyo factory yoyo I make sure to give them a lesson pertinent to the style of yoyoing they're trying to achieve. I mostly teach them binds and trapeze but I've had kids come back in and teach me tricks. Whatever you're doing is working. Keep it up man!.
As someone who has recently started their own yoyo journey at the age of 27, i see many similarities between this community as well as the community i've been apart of for years, that being the Fighting Game Community. The level of discipline, self discovery and elation that comes from finally landing a trick you've been practicing for months feels exactly the same with learning a complex combo or doing a "setup". In that moment every time, everything just seems to come together and finding others who share that same passion is a feeling like no other Gentry.
I agree! I came the opposite direction, doing yo-yoing for years but got into SFIV for a while there. I didn't get great or anything but enough to appreciate how interesting it is. I believe Yuuki Spencer was pretty active in the FGC.
@@ShawnFumo I agree, I started playing SFlV when I was younger and I can remember not being able to do something as simple as a hadoken and now I feel the same way when trying to land certain tricks. The process, however is what drives me to keep going because I manage to impress myself whenever I look back on what I've been able to accomplish.
I am so hyped about the new yoyo boom and your announcement. I learned the basics from you about 1.5 year ago and I believe that if you traveled in countries that don't have access on yoyos(Europe) then the yoyo craze would go crazy. Anyways glad that you are trying to introduce more people to our community. You are amazing!
4:30 I agree with Rei. I love IRL level ups. Unlike most hobbies prop manipulation has such clear progress points, unlocking new tricks and honing them to a high accuracy percentages, I get such a thrill from the process.
Yup, THP was the big Crazy not only in Japan, but also in Hawaii. Everyone wanted to play like Alex. I am so fortunate to be apart of the THP team for Hawaii (year 2000) and continue to pursue yoyoing because the nostalgic feeling it brings. Keep up the great work Gentry. Looking forward to your announcement.
I started to yo-yo a month ago in my late 50s and I have advanced in about four weeks to doing the double or nothing smoothly. What I think makes the yo-yo a fascinating thing is not that you can’t do anything else but a number of other things. Historical significance of a yo-yo is almost magical. You cannot overlook the history of it. Then there’s the sense that if you put the work in you will always get rewarded and that sense of continual accomplishment is bar none. To play a yo-yo is also to build yourself in areas of motor ability and mental acuteness, you have to be aware of what you’re doing wrong and make the physical and mental corrections to make the particular trick successful. Taking up the yo-yo was the best thing I did in the last 20 years.
I was very much there in 1998 & 1999. My high school in NYC had everyone playing with yo-yos, and Yomegas were generally the brand of choice. The fad died by summer of '99, but I always kept an appreciation and appetite for it. Still pick up a throw now and then (I like Japanese loopers like Spingears and Something LP, but still appreciate Duncans), and can do a number of classic tricks and some loops. Nothing spectacular, but I'm happy with what I can still do and more. My kids get a kick out of it. It's also a great fidget/stress relief, and a good way to keep ultra-fine motor skills sharp (when not picking up an instrument 😉). Good luck restarting the boom!
I started 2 months ago. What i find is that yoyoing keeps me away from my phone. I wasn't super addicted but nowadays i sometimes don't even know and don't care where my phone is. Also a friend of mine smokes and i join him outside often, yoyoing just increased the joy a lot i have when im going outside with him and keeps me from being tempted to smoke too. Point is, i think in this time period many people would benefit from getting into yoyoing. Society is in need of a trend like this. I'm happy you're doing whatever you can to promote it but i also think people like myself should help and spread the word. Just pass someone a yoyo and the yotricks first 50 trick Playlist and they're bound to get hooked. People like me can do that too
I was part of that Yoyo craze. I remember my X-brain yoyo and doing the cradle for the first time. I was extremely good for having no guidance. Wish I could take up yoyo again, but I'll always have those memories of being the best and frankly the only real yoyo enthusiast in school, lol.
Two years ago in the USA this channel led me to start yoyoing. I came back to Papua New Guinea and started a miniature yoyo boom amongst some of my peers. Thanks so much for helping me get into yoyoing!
@@Gentrystein I have already learned the tricks in both of your learn to yoyo series, and I was wondering if there were any tricks or combos you'd recommend learning after.
I'm 47 years old and was introduced to YoYo's back in the 80's when there was a boom at the school I was at. I didn't stick with it but I'm back now to learn the basics and hopefully keep an interest. I think an untapped market would be impoverished countries in South America and Africa. YoYo is inexpensive and kids in those countries have a hunger and drive that could seriously breed imagination and innovation. If you can just give them the exposure the rest would be history. They don't have the distractions like video games and Internet like more developed countries do. Either way really love you content and infectious enthusiasm for the sport you love.

I hope yoyos go big again, I haven't had a yo-yo since 1999 and haven't thought about them once since. My partner asked me what I want for Christmas a few days back and for some reason my brain instantly thought of yoyos, I've since been researching and watching videos and my partner's ordered me a yo-yo factory arrow, can't wait. Think I'm going to order the DNA too because it looks awesome, when I was a child it was so difficult to learn and I got bored doing the same few tricks over and over. If a new boom happens with social media videos available to learn, I can see it being unbelievably big with everyone yo-yoing everywhere
@@Gentrystein yes I have the arrow and the DNA and it's going great thanks to your videos 👍 With the responsive bearing fitted I've noticed it becoming less and less responsive, I'm guessing I need to order some bearing lube, I didn't think I'd need it after only a few weeks, but maybe that's normal ? It would help a ton if Evan, Brandon, and Angel2up all produced similar content around this same topic. If you really want to start a boom collaboration with all the big influencers is key.
I can completely relate to the whole "it was the one thing I was good at" thing. I was not the most athletic kid, was pretty much that quiet kid on the school yard. That was until one day I snuck a Yomega brain yoyo to school and showed my friends some very basic tricks...walking the dog, around the world, and rock the baby. From there, yoyos took off. It was kind of cool because I pretty much started the craze at school when my small circle of friends began to learn how to make a yoyo sleep. This was in the year 1997, just before the boom really took off.
I had a yoyo as a kid, now 50 years later, I fly stunt kites and trick them. For me playing yoyo is a means of training my hands with small precise hand movements.
i was one of those kids that had a few yoyos during the 90s yoyo boom..... and i brought it to an area of another state a few years later and started yoyoing at school and then turned a few friends onto yoyos then most of the school was yoyoing.... then it died off and it was sad to see.... and i stopped yoyoing at some point..... but glad to say that i have picked it up again at age 38 and so stoked about it.... yoyos have come a long way..... i still remember my blue yomega brain.... it was THE yoyo back then
Just ordered the arrow off of your website, I can’t wait to get it! When I was a kid I was into yo-yoing and then lost interest but now hoping to pick up where I left off
I wish I could start yoyoing again but, I do not have a yoyo. Right now, I cannot afford a yoyo because I got to make sure me and some of my family are feed. I live with my aunt, my twin brother, and one of my cousins. Most of our money goes to bills and food. So, we do not have money to spend on ourselves right now. Especially because of inflation. It is still great to see videos about yoyoing. I do love these videos.
I got hyped as soon as you said that you are going to make yoyo more accessible. But I would like to say one thing don't get pressured by the people's hope for something big, just do what you want to. As we are not standing behind you and pushing you forward, we are standing together with you walking along with you.
I'm a 90s kid so remember the craze well. Earlier this year I got myself a cheap yoyo on a whim and took to UA-cam to improve on the basics I knew before buying an unresponsive. Here in the UK it doesn't seem as popular but I have started to throw while in public, personally I havent seen anyone with a yoyo since being kid and being in my 30s some may think I'm strange but I'm building on my character. The analogy about leveling up in video games vs real life is 100% correct the sense of achievement from landing and getting consistent with new tricks definitely builds confidence. Good luck with your mission.

@@craigseeney3355 no not at all she thinks it’s kind of funny, I need to be occupied so I think she’s glad it’s something like this and not something financially crippling or dangerous (had a motorbike obsession a few years ago but had to get rid due to space needed at home) I don’t really have a main, but of the ones I do have I love my Yomega Maverick the most, it’s not the best by any means but was the first metal one I bought and I have somehow bonded with it! Other than that I have two Luftverk plastics, the Fulvia and the 000 which really perform and I have a yo-yo palace code which is probably the best of the bunch in terms of playability. I can’t DNA, haven’t really tried it yet I’m kind of working through string tricks and trying to get better at catching etc so that I never miss. It’s slow going but fun! I do find that if I learn a new trick I can tend to unlearn a previous one! Somewhere in the maelstrom of catches and string hops the muscle memory takes over and the theory is lost, so if I learn a new trick I have been forgetting the old ones! Frustrating but a fascinating insight into memory and how we learn things. I think its made me realise I am a lazy learner, which explains a lot and is something I am working on improving. The power of the yo-yo huh! Who knew!
I'm from Lebanon and I got my first yoyo (duncan windrunner) last week! Yoyo was very popular here years ago because of the show "blazing teens" but now this toy is forgotten, so maybe i can spark a new craze in my school 🤔
To me the feeling is really similar, I started playing yoyo in 2012/3 because I entered a toy shop here in Spain, and saw a yomega fireball, which also had a CD with tricks, Ooch was my biggest inspiration to start learning to yoyo. Sadly nowadays there are no yoyos in toy stores :c at least here in Albacete
It's funny that I recently bought my first pro yoyo and just after that I saw how big some yoyo guys are on the internet inclunding you, this just happened bc I went to a toy/ party store and found a begginer yoyo, now I'm enjoying myself with this new hobby!
For the past few days ive been wanting to go try yoyo for the first time since i found out the channels of evan nagao or angel2up, they just move so satisfying and you and the other professionals make it so interesting
I was lucky. I was visiting Japan right dead smack in summer of the huge hyper yo-yo Bandai boom! It was ridiculous. You couldn't turn on the TV without seeing a special about yoyoing.
The Super Yoyo Anime make is started yoyoing, Pewdiepie make me come back during quarantine, because that's a good opportunity to do more things, you, Gentry make me stay
I ended up getting an Amazon special. Not because your yo-yo aren’t clearly better, but because it came with two. I’m going to turn one into a motorized responsive with infinite spin. I can’t wait to be able to afford a steel shutter tho.
The last huge yo-yo boom happened, for us, in 1998... when Yomega reined supreme lol. That was 4th grade for me. Probably before any of you were born, though haha... but I do hope another one comes. In my adult life, yo-yos helped me get over the hand-to-mouth habit after I quit smoking.
me and several of my online friends have gotten into yoyoing because of bridget being released in guilty gear strive. she uses yoyos in the game and it made me want to try them in real life. i am not very good yet but i have started to be able to semi consistently land trapeze! progress.
It's funny, I was into yo-yo when the hyper yoyo boom happened. I tried getting into yo-yo when I was young and I liked playing with my old Duncan yo-yo (was a 2a style responsive yoyo). At the time I remember seeing a lot of people playing with H style yo-yos, doing all sorts of crazy string tricks and I wanted to do them as well. One summer I almost convinced my father to get me a butterfly yo-yo but it didn't work out. Fast forward to about 5 years ago and I just decided to randomly pick up a yo-yo one day. Now I play with my yo-yos in my spare time (I really like 4a) and I quite enjoy it. I do kind of wonder if I had gotten one of those butterfly yo-yos would I have become better at yo-yo when I was younger or wouldn't have just been another phase.
@@Gentrystein thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the story. Been getting my nieces and nephews into yoyo and your videos are invaluable for that (since I'm not nearly as good as you). Keep it going; I really hope to see a new yoyo boom soon.
I think a big part of the problem is you can't just go to your local walmart and buy a yo-yo anymore, or if you can it's some crappy party favor. I remember for the longest time you'd only ever see duncan imperials or ja-rue or something in certain stores, but then all of a sudden Yomega was everywhere back in the 90s. Now you can't even find an imperial, let alone all the other advanced newer stuff, except for like kite shops or stores dedicated specifically to "skill based toys" like stunt kites and boomerangs, and those aren't too common outside of touristy beach areas to my knowledge.
It's funny I literally dug all mine out from 20 years ago like the day this video came out lol me and all my buddies, we'd totally forgotten how popular they were and all the different ones they had. We were obsessed in like 1999. Someone used to go around to all the schools and sell them
For me at age 7, a lot of the yoyos were cool and gimmicky. I had one that got on and off the string with button release, one that if you put it to sleep blades came out, yomega brain , yomega fireball, 4 inch heavy steel yoyo. The designs were diverse and crazy and often taught one trick well but then i could go back to the classic fireball or another one and do them etc . Like the blades with the sleeper. Then older got more into competition yoyos. But I still want like cool fun crazy gimmicky yoyos like the 90s but good quality and able to do more tricks to give to my kids
I used to game but yoyo ing felt more alive real world stuff 😄and more skill full and that lvl up feeling i get every time i learn a new trick, so instead of spending a couple of hours in gaming everyday i have decided to yoyo 😊
A modern japanese anime series with good yoyo's with good design that can be televised to most countries. This will surely make another yoyo boom. Trust me.
Are those full interviews going to be posted? It was really neat to see some legends. Definitely would like to see some more serious content and less talking over DNAs.

@Gentry Stein how fun that was seeing a notification from you. I knew it! I guess Ill see if that was the new one. Thanks for the update I'll keep my ears open. The OG and the Wangle were the top of my rotation for so long. I still need a bimetel so it'll be fun to get that and the new one soon. I've been stuck on the Vulture and the Mazel Rectifier for a good month or more. I highly suggest giving them a throw you'll love them. Can't wait to see the new drop, and from someone who got his first Duncan in 1977 thank you for everything you have done for the sport!

@@craigseeney3355 no not at all she thinks it’s kind of funny, I need to be occupied so I think she’s glad it’s something like this and not something financially crippling or dangerous (had a motorbike obsession a few years ago but had to get rid due to space needed at home)
I don’t really have a main, but of the ones I do have I love my Yomega Maverick the most, it’s not the best by any means but was the first metal one I bought and I have somehow bonded with it!
One of the best videos in terms of yo-yo information and perspective!!!
If anyone can do it, it’s you Gentry!! Even folks over 50 can learn!!
Thanks so much!
Wow, everyone speaks such good English! Must be the influence of speaking to all the western yo-yoers!
The Japanese yoyo scene is amazing. Cant wait to go to worlds this year in Osaka.
Thanks for bringing the Spinstar to Woolies, gentry
Shhh don’t give away the announcement :p
I've been trying to make the yoyo boom happen again for 5 years now. I carry a yoyo with me everywhere I go. Best toy ever
Yo gentry you’re my favorite you’re the one that got me into yo-yoing almost 3 years ago❤❤❤
Love to hear it. What tricks are you working on now?
@@Gentrystein omg i’m working on Black hops right now omg
Gentry thank you so much u inspired me so much I have got in to yo-yos ever since
Love to hear it! Keep up the good work
your the reason i yoyo thank you!
Thanks for the support! Happy to hear it =)
I would say the anime Hyper Yoyo did help a lot in Asia. Its easy to get kids hooked and learn from it
It's funny that I recently bought my first pro yoyo and just after that I saw how big some yoyo guys are on the internet inclunding you, this just happened bc I went to a toy/ party store and found a begginer yoyo, now I'm enjoying myself with this new hobby!
For the past few days ive been wanting to go try yoyo for the first time since i found out the channels of evan nagao or angel2up, they just move so satisfying and you and the other professionals make it so interesting
Love to hear it! Check out the yo-yo master pack on my website at the link in my bio! It’s perfect to get started. :)
This inspired my to buy your yoyo (DNA), cant wait till it comes!
Good choice! Cant wait for you to get it =)
Gentry is literally making the next year boom right now while putting yo-yos at every corner of the planet rn
Australia vlogs coming soon 😮💨
@@Gentrystein let’s go
I've played with a modern yoyo since 2015 since you won nationals. And today I see alot of young students in my school starting to yoyo
Love to hear it!
I started a very slow growing yoyo crazy in my school😅😅
yooo, Angle's speed is god, your video is god.
So are your comments. What trick are you currently working on?
Banger of a video, gen🌳
Hey awesome video! so im a 90s boomer and back into it! let the new boom begin!!
YES! Love to hear it.
I was lucky.
I was visiting Japan right dead smack in summer of the huge hyper yo-yo Bandai boom! It was ridiculous. You couldn't turn on the TV without seeing a special about yoyoing.
Aw man I thought you were gonna interview 6 time world yoyo champ shu takada
The Super Yoyo Anime make is started yoyoing, Pewdiepie make me come back during quarantine, because that's a good opportunity to do more things, you, Gentry make me stay
I love it 90s kid here man never will stop
I ended up getting an Amazon special. Not because your yo-yo aren’t clearly better, but because it came with two. I’m going to turn one into a motorized responsive with infinite spin. I can’t wait to be able to afford a steel shutter tho.
The last huge yo-yo boom happened, for us, in 1998... when Yomega reined supreme lol. That was 4th grade for me. Probably before any of you were born, though haha... but I do hope another one comes. In my adult life, yo-yos helped me get over the hand-to-mouth habit after I quit smoking.
How do you not have more than 5 million subs?
I know right😂
Working on it. Patience. Thanks for your support!
Awesome yo-yo content and I found a way to wind the aarow yo-yo in it's responsive form
Thanks! Check out my learn to yoyo series here on my channel to learn some tricks.
me and several of my online friends have gotten into yoyoing because of bridget being released in guilty gear strive. she uses yoyos in the game and it made me want to try them in real life. i am not very good yet but i have started to be able to semi consistently land trapeze! progress.
Interesting, I haven't heard of this. I'll look into it. Happy to hear you've started! Thanks for the support. =)
Yo gentry I copped a shutter eco and I am sooooo impressed! I love all of your vids and hope you have a great day
Shutter evo I mean
I appreciate the support! How do you like the Shutter EVO?
@@Gentrystein I LOOOOOOOOVE IT
Agreed. Also, nice with the Fontaines.
Picked up a yo-yo today. First time in 15 years at least. Cool channel
Love to hear it! What tricks are you working on?
I just started yo-yoing, and only have two fingers on my left hand. I can only rock the baby, but its super fun tbh
You’ve already got me hooked I might get a master pack from your website soon
Love to hear it! That’s a great choice. Make sure to check out my learn to yoyo series once the master pack arrives to you!
I only started yo-yo 1 month ago
I started with a fixed axle and now i have a replay and a DNA
Love to hear it! Thanks for the support! What tricks are you working on right now?
@@Gentrystein i am working on godspeed
@@Gentrystein i really like your content
Can you make a godspeed tutorial because your tutorials a super easy to follow
Thanks for sharing your story! I enjoyed reading it. Happy to hear you're back into it.
@@Gentrystein thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the story. Been getting my nieces and nephews into yoyo and your videos are invaluable for that (since I'm not nearly as good as you). Keep it going; I really hope to see a new yoyo boom soon.
Let’s start this boom gentry! Let’s go!
Now you can't even find an imperial, let alone all the other advanced newer stuff, except for like kite shops or stores dedicated specifically to "skill based toys" like stunt kites and boomerangs, and those aren't too common outside of touristy beach areas to my knowledge.
just got my first yoyo because of you guys
Love to hear it. How are you liking it?
This video is incredible. Love= YoYo
BRO IM GOING TO MEET CONNOR SEALS IN PERSON SOON! i cant wait!
It's funny I literally dug all mine out from 20 years ago like the day this video came out lol me and all my buddies, we'd totally forgotten how popular they were and all the different ones they had. We were obsessed in like 1999. Someone used to go around to all the schools and sell them
YES. Bring in the nostalgia. Have fun.
I love your videos gentry
you are my favorite yoyóer and your videos got me into yoying
What tricks are you working on now?
I am working on the dna still but I can
I started yo-yo because of you
Love from Slovakia
Strong work Bro. A new boom would be welcomed for sure.
It will happen. =)
Bro gentry u r a goat at yo-yoing
I appreciate you =)
@@Gentrystein np man
I AM HYPED!! Can’t wait!
Your videos got me into Yo-Yoing and that with 43 !
bro i just got into actual yoyoing, and literally today i purchased my first pro (ish) yoyo the magicyoyo V3, its gonna come in 5 days :D
Do a easy guide for your Godspeed speed combo
I used to game but yoyo ing felt more alive real world stuff 😄and more skill full and that lvl up feeling i get every time i learn a new trick, so instead of spending a couple of hours in gaming everyday i have decided to yoyo 😊
A modern japanese anime series with good yoyo's with good design that can be televised to most countries. This will surely make another yoyo boom. Trust me.
Are those full interviews going to be posted? It was really neat to see some legends. Definitely would like to see some more serious content and less talking over DNAs.
Is the announcement that new Shutter you're spinning? Just a guess. Curious what that is you're throwing there. My favorite color way of yours. I may be crazy. Love hearing some legends talk about their inspirato! The Boom is here.
announcement coming tomorrow!
What would you recommend yo-yo one or magic yo-yo k2 crystal plus
I'd suggest the Arrow from my website for you.
We need you at the czech nats gentry!!
I love your videos keep going forward ❤️❤️❤️
