I really Enjoyed the Great Basin. We met a north bounder who was riding at night to avoid the wind. We got to the highway going southbound towards Rawlings as the sunset and rode that stretch in the dark. I trust you did the same. The trucks were fast and furious. That part wasn’t my favorite but the Basin was. Great scenery. Thanks.
Thanks Bret! Truly magical experience. The basin holds its surprises. Yes, we also took the highway. But at 3am there was literally no truck on the road ;) and that’s also why there was no interesting video footage just the dark ;)
I think the Basin was some of the most enjoyable riding on my entire trip last year. Crossing it Southbound, the wind was generally unfavorable and it was very hot, but I stopped at A & M Reservoir for a 70+ mile first day followed by a 54 mile second day into Rawlins so it was not nearly as difficult as I had planned for.
Guys this was awesome. I’ve loved riding the basin - I had the same experiences at least in variety. The basin is an enigma - unique like a fingerprint on the hand of God. If he leaned on the earth, his hand would press onto the Great Divide Basin - tender and harsh, smooth and rough, small and expansive, love it or loathe it. Whatever it is, it’s impressive
Wow, and there was me thinking that you were going to swan into Canada having perfect weather all the way, hats off for staying so positive, stunning scenery, great episode.
Another excellent episode about this epic journey! It really is surprising to see how much conditions can change along this route, with just a few hours. Congratulations on breaking through your first 1k subscribers.
I love the Great Basin from the first time I saw it as a teen in the late 1960’s. I later returned for oil & gas. Reading the tales of the first riders in the 90’s coming from Jackson to Rawlins and created the GDMR triggered me to bike packing a decade later. BTW, in winter that high elevation desert can be the most miserable and glorious in North America.
Another fantastic episode, thank you. I loved the guitar music as it fit so well with the loneliness of the wide open spaces. We started NoBo 2 days ago and are currently in Silver City, unfortunately will miss the Gila to Pie Town c/o fires but that’s the GDMBR. Expect the unexpected!
@@MarionandFred We take the HW 180 to Glenwood, then HW 12 to Apache creek and to Pie Town/TD route where it crosses HW 12 ( if open ) or HW 32 to Quemado then to Pie Town. Lots of pavement through NM with all the Forest areas closed.
You are a really tough couple and finished the day in spite of the extremly bad weathercondition successful. How long did it need to clean the bikes? great impressions watching this movie
Thanks 🙏 There was no chance to really clean the bikes out there. You simply have to wait till it starts drying scratch of the big chunks and start riding again. Gets cleaner as you ride along in dry conditions 😜
What a beautiful view! The clouds through which a ray of sun shines enhances the images. By the way: in the intro you call it day 26 but should that not be day 28 because of two rest days in Rawlings? What a mega distance, 133 miles! I did not know Peanut Butter is also an issue in the Basin, good to know. Fortunately, after two hours it was dry enough to continue cycling.
Hi Bill, we were also surprised about peanut butter conditions… and yes should be day 28 really. I did not want to confuse too much, went the opposite 😜 Will see what I can correct…
Hi Fred en Marion, what are your settings in the GoPro? Resolution (4K or 2.7K), frames per second (25, 50 or 100), Bit Rate, Sharpness, Color? My computer does not support HEVC so I cannot use 4K. I am experimenting with 2.7K / 50 fps / high bit rate / low sharpness and flat color. De last two I can optimize in post processing. I cannot get such sharp images as you have so I am wondering what I do wrong.
Hello Bill, sorry for my delayed reply. Hope this still helps. Our settings are the following: 4k/30FPS, Wide, HyperSmooth: Boost, Bit rate: High, Shutter: Auto, EV Comp: 0, White Balance: Auto, ISO Min: 100, ISO Max: 800, Sharpness: High, Color: GoPro, RAW Audio: Off, Wind: Auto. All the best!
What a day - one of the most memorable experiences of the trip. I will never forget what it felt like riding all alone through the basin... :)
Watching this brings back so many great memories!!
🙏
You guys aare amazing!
Thank you Polli 🙏 Great meeting you 😀
Great Basin lives up to its name: vast landscapes, blustery winds, heavy rain clouds leading to muddy trails. You two did a great job!
Thanks dad!
and what a lovely view @14:04
You are so attentive! Amazing eye 👁
As usual..the silence..the views..the music...your commentary....such a good job! #lookatthhis @6:53 ❤
Thank you Marcelo! Great catch 😉

Woop woop , liked it before watching it 😂🤪
This was phenomenal to watch.
Thank you Joe!
Freeze the frame at 9.40, to me it is the shot of the series, I miss the Basin. Hope you are both well.

Wow…you are the Basin expert! Oil & Gas production out there made us curious to understand more about it….

Thank you Andre! Enjoy this great adventure. Where are you heading from Silver City then? Be safe out there!!!

Great episode and great vistas. Did you need to replenish water supplies throughout the 130 miles?
Thanks Richard. We made it through without replenishing water. Marion did filter some water towards the end, but she ended up not using it.
What is y'all's bike weight not counting water and food?
Hi Mike, Open WIDE in our setup is 19.6 lbs (8.9kg). But as you mention the water and food etc in the end puts weight into a different perspective.
