Those transparent shadows shows that they REALLY understand Saturn hardware
The Saturn deserves all the love it can get.
True that , I always thought sega was too far ahead and never at the perfect time. The Saturn with its graphics and then the memory card that allows arcade perfect imports to be played, Dreamcast and its online play, oh and I almost forgot the Sega Channel.
The more love it gets means, the chances of getting top tier games to get translations will go up too!
No it doesn't.
@@hpickettz34 Yes it does. Gtfo
When I saw the 6-player, two screen cabinet my mind was blown way back when 🤩
They had one at my local mall arcade back in the day. It was a beast. 😁
Wondering how much $$ they go for now?
Same here, 😂I remember asking for quarters from my mom
I miss the arcade days
Same. Privileged enough to have played it like that!! :D
Current day developers are doing absolutely amazing things with old hardware, they're showing us that all the old consoles had a lot more potential than we were shown or imagined.
Indeed. I can imagine so many possible ports and projects killed off at the corporate round tables.
The X-Men arcade game was released back when Konami was still firing on all cylinders and was awesome. I can still remember playing the dual screen 6 player version at my local Aladdin's Castle arcade back in the day. Those were great times when you could play through a beat 'em up with random people and have ton of fun!
These should have been the kinda games dropped on the Saturn from launch. Because it would have helped with the "bringing the arcade home" feeling
Unfortunately in 94/95 2D gaming was thought to he outdated. It was 3d or bust. 2D didnt really see a resurgence until the mid/late 00s.
I still have an Xbox 360 and a PS3 with this downloaded onto them. It’s insane to me that those downloads (which were only available for 3 years) are still the only official home console releases!
Same! If my ps3 dies I’m gonna scream lol have MVC 2 and Marvel Super Heroes on there also😂
Emulation 🤑
@@Aragorn7884emulation is my last last resort…and I got full custody of 4 kids…I still got plenty to play.
I also still had my 360 so every once in awhile I could play X-men/TMNT/Simpsons arcade. But my 360 got destroyed in a house fire. I brought one of them retro consoles to play old games, now I'm thinking of getting a retro handheld to play instead.
@@HeyDrGameryou can still download it can’t you? If it’s in your account
It would be great to see a port like this of Golden Axe: Revenge of the Death Adder to the Saturn.
That was a good game, that shamefully had zero ports to anything.
@@Boogie_the_catastro City mini
Did anyone port Sonic Mania to the Saturn yet?
60fps & figure shaped shadows baby. I hope they finish best wishes for the devs. Knock on wood!
The arcade version was a cherished part of my childhood too! So it's awesome to see _new_ developments.
I saw a working 6 player version being sold for $500ish in the late 90s from a mall arcade in Taylor, MI. I wrote down the number to call and ask about buying it, then realized there was no way I could get it to fit in my place at the time.
Also......no one mentioning those ground shadows in the demo!?! I knew something looked different right off the bat and it's super noticeable when you look at the side-by-side footage with the arcade. Looks like a great improvement over the arcade version in my book.
Yeap. Not just circles, but actual sprites silhouettes. All this on base (no RAM expansion cartridge) Saturn hardware. With additional 4Mb RAM, it might even boast some audio/visual improvements.
Hopefully he will use the 4MB expansion & pack as much of the arcade as he can with its extra ooommph!
Would be even better if link cable support could be added so the game can go into 6 player mode with 2 tvs.
@@HellTantrumbullor even multi tap support!
Disney: "Oh that's nice. Kill it."
Not true. we got a new MVC2 cabinet out of it.
"Welcome To Die!"
@@MacUser2-il2cxthe least they can do consider what they did the last fighting game they made. MCU vs Capcom Infinite sucked
@@Linklex7
Infinite literally was the worst possible outcome of a Disney Marvel Capcom crossover. They pushed so hard for characters and no one cared about and everyone looked like crap.
70th like
These fan works are amazing
The last few generations do not know how amazing arcades were in the late 80s and until about 1998. It was truly a great time in gaming! The golden age for sure! This game and so many others were just so much fun and we're not possible at home at the time!..Arcade games were generations ahead of home consoles, now arcade and home games are similar or even better at home... Different time and different mindset!!!
Way lower suicide rates back when arcades were a thing. That’s for sure.
It's nice that someone spend lots of time porting it on the Saturn. This is close as we can get for a console ports today.
my mall had the 6 player version. packed arcade in the 90's and seeing that game have 6 people playing was a site to see. man if I could go back and video record that with a camera that woulda been some historic footage
My RI mall had it too... that wide screen was impressive to young me! 😁 I wish my mom had brought a camera when me and my friends would visit and see all the new games like MK 3 etc. We didn't think that way back then but the 90s Arcade was a dying era. Many memories now stuck in our heads only. 😳
Amazingly, a sporting-goods shop in my local area had the 6-player cabinet in a back room. A strange place to encounter the deluxe version for sure. Getting in on a six-player game and beating it is one of my favorite arcade memories. And, yes, I was Dazzler.
Keep up with this type of footage. I always felt that the maximum technical potential of Saturn and 32x were never met in their lifespan. These projects always give us an opportunity to see what could have been if they survived long enough for programmers to get the most out of these systems.
Your videos convinced me to rebuy a sega saturn.
Steam deck is better, you can play this and thousands of other arcade games.
So happy to see my favorite console of all time still receiving new games to this day, and yes of course I would like to see more videos of this development effort, those sprites look awesome, keep us posted SegaLord! ❤
This looks mightily impressive! It's nice to see the Saturn getting some homebrew loving!
My favorite X-men game hands down, I wish this game got ported to PS1 or Saturn back in the day it would have been a hot seller.
We had the 6 player cabinet at the local mall big arcade when I was in middle school, we beat it so much, amazing 6 player game
Great to see people are making new games for Sega Saturn and love to see more arcade originals coming to the Sega Saturn.
This and Golden Axe Revenge of Death Adder need to be fully ported. Glorious multiplayer action, I love our little big Saturn community, these projects truly give me life.
Wow the music is great in this! You couldn't hear it back in the day since arcades were so loud with a cacophony of sounds
I actually believe the dev added that music as an Easter egg homage to x-men 97. I'm pretty sure that wasn't in the arcade.
Keep us posted on this one for sure.
in 1993, i got to go to Sea-World.. and me and my brother got to play NOT ONLY The *FULL* 6 PLAYER VERSION of X-Men, but we got to play Turtles in Time.... in a ROOM UNTIL ITSELF.... the entire WALL was a Projection Screen for Turtles in Time!
the Turtles were LITERALLY BIGGER THAN FULL GROWN MEN!!!! it was... something special. holy Crap it was something special. it was like going to a TMNT Rock Concert at the tender age of 10, but YOU were the Rockstar!!
Can’t wait for the 32x version!!! 🤞…please!!!!
This looks pretty awesome, I'm interested in more updates on this.
The dialogue was pretty hilarious though.
XMEN WELCOME TO DIE.
This was a childhood favorite of mine in the arcades. It was an incredibly impressive and fun game. The multiplayer just made it even more fun! Yeah, I'd love to hear progress on this conversion. It looks very impressive so far. It really is a shame Konami didn't bring many of its hard-hitting arcade classics over to the Saturn. It would have been awesome to see like a "Konami Arcade Collection" for the Saturn and Playstation back then with X-Men, The Simpsons, Bucky O' Hare and others!
"Super rare"? I've seen the six player cabinet more than any of the others. Then and now.
Yeah I know a bar that has the six player cabinet
I don’t know about you guys, but I love to play as Dazzler.
Storm can wipe out everything easily too. So can Cyclops if you time it right.
Dazzler has been, and will always be, my main for this game.
@@icenine09I've always been a Nightcrawler man.
@@RetroRockGamer Oh, I definitely fuck with Nightcrawler. His mutant power move is very effective when you know what you're doing.
I once joined in on a game and Dazzler was the only open spot. It was a ton of fun and we beat the game with six people playing which was really cool. It has remained one of my favorite arcade games and I've played it a ton. Dazzler is my second favorite character to play after Wolverine. Her throw going forward instead of backward is probably my only gripe. Dazzler is great.
So many quarters I put into it. I remember getting it to work on MAME and the excitement from it given how many years of not playing it. Then it released on 360 or PS3 with online play…chef’s kiss
You always make my day when you drop fresh content. Thank you 🙏🏻
Only arcade co-op game that me and 5 other complete strangers actually beat! Played it at the arcade in Seaside, Oregon when I was like 12 or so.
I still have the full X-men arcade game on the ps3. Crazy how we never got it on ps4 or ps5. Hopefully one-day there will be port collection of the X-men titles from genesis, super nes as well the arcade game. Also i still have the Simpsons arcade on ps3 too,so hopefully one-day there will be a collection like they did tmnt
Ps3, 360, xbox, ps2, gamecube, and wii is the best era for retro games and arcade collections. Sucks they never continue this trend during the end of those generations.
I've been following this project and playing on my MiSTer, it plays great!
If I had a Saturn, I'd be playing this right now! Fortunately for me, I can play it in MAME, but it's awesome seeing this homebrewed on the Saturn and it'll be cool to see if it gets arcade accurate in the future.
We need more updates!
It's beautiful! I've been looking at this for 8 hours now.
My top favorite superhero games list includes this along with the Sega versions X-Men and 2: Clone wars. Awesomeness
My favorite arcade game hands down. My local arcade had the 6 player cabinet. I can't count how many times I beat the game on a full cabinet with 5 total strangers, and it was always an amazing experience.
Love to see new updates! It is looking very impressive
“Nothing moves The Blob!”….*Starts sprinting!!*
Someone wants to be the Juggernaut!😵💀
That said, love when devs come together to preserve gaming legacy and use console potential to it’s very limit.
I remember this game, this was the one that was famous for lines like "Welcome....to DIE!" and "X-Chicken!". Both by Magneto of course.
In may youth we had a 3-screen version of that at the mall
5:49 Yeah, more updates as they come along. 👍👍👍
Can't wait for this to be ready to play on the Saturn! Updates please!
Can’t wait for the analogue pocket port
Yes please, bring us more updates Lord X!
The 6-player X Men cab was staple at the main arcade at Kennywood Park in PA for a few years. Definitely finished the game there with a bunch of other random kids. Great times.
Its weird that the 6 player cabinet is considered rare. at my local arcade back in the day (R.I.P Galaxy World) they had it. And another one nearby had it too. I think it wasn't until i went to a local bowling alley that i saw the 4P cabinet. Oddly enough that means i never saw the basic 2P cabinet.
I definitely see that there is still alot of work to be done, but I definitely think so far its looking really good. I also noticed that the shadows on the characters looked so much better than in the arcade 'blob' shadow. Its an actual shadow of the character, which is really cool.
I am really intrigued to see what else becomes of this project.
It was mostly smaller arcades that had either the 2 or 4 player versions. medium and large arcades had the 6 player version but it certainly wasn't rare.
Jailbroke my ps3 last year, and got a hold of this one on a website that shut down soon after. So glad i got it. great game to play with my young kids. God bless the all the pirates out there. Helpin me bond with ma boys.
Please keep us updated on this! I want a full port so bad!
Loved this game growing up.
The problem those days, with video games based on comic book characters, is the licensing issue.
Can someone imagine, how good a Maximum Carnage or X - Men Apocalypse, would look and play on current gen consoles, if they remade those games.
So cool they are still making Saturn games.
This was my favorite arcade game growing up!
I'm still hearing that X-Men theme from the 90s (which later resurfaced in X-Men '97) in that project even know that arcade game is based on the pilot "Pride of the X-Men".
Thanks!
You bet!
I love the Saturn definitely my favourite pickup from Japan I love seeing all the community ports really showing the potential it has
I once got to play 6 player on that dual screen cabinet. very fond memory.
Yes please bring updates to this!
I'm really happy to see this kind of project coming to the Sega Saturn. It gives me the energy to keep improving the Jo Engine.😁
I appreciate their work!!!!
Awesome! Definitely follow up with this project! I can't wait until you can give a review of the full game!
My arcade had the 2 screen version, I loved the intro graphics and fast animations, something I also enjoyed about Sega's Spiderman game.
The shadows on the ground are a nice touch. They weren't even in the arcade game.
Saturn homebrew is the best topic for me.
Proud Owner of The Sega Saturn back in 1997-1999.
I'm impressed.. Even with just a single credited programmer, they've doubled the frame rate, had the majority of object and character sprites in such an earlier version.
Really excited to see this. Hella Golden Axe Revenge of Death Adder could potentially get some kind of conversion like this. That would be legendary. Please keep us updated!
Keep the updates coming, thanks 🎉
Without a doubt this game has to come out... it is one of the best I have seen about the X-MEN, it has a great classic flavor and also one of my favorite Arcade games, I want to play it again on my Saturn!
I spent hours on this game as a kid. Never left the cabinet when we went out lol
Man that two screen one back in the day was my jaaaaaaaaaaaawn! Straight '92 style! 😜
I play The X-men arcade game a lot when I was a kid and it's still brilliant today. 😀👍🎮
I was lucky enough to grab the 360 port while it existed. Good times were had. You're kinda making me want to boot it up again for old times sake.
You can probably get some online multiplayer going on these days on Fightcade.
Long live the Sega Saturn!
Thanks foe the heads up on this! Looks great!
2:00 it’s different now man, tiny teams can achieve amazing results now, the tools have advanced so far that in the right hands amazing things are possible, even when one is working alone.
That is excellent work, improves the arcade release, cannot wait to see more.
This was and remains one of my favorite arcade games. I've played it many times over the years. I simply do not get tired of playing it. I can beat it, and then play it again immediately. I can play it over and over for weeks and it never stops being fun. And that's just single player. I love it. I like seeing this project and I hope it's continued. I'll be curious to see if they include the different regional variations which affects how mutant powers are used, damage and HP amounts, stage length in a couple of spots, whether there are power ups, and differences in enemy waves behavior and placement. The arcade game gets cute with the hit detection for most of the bosses too. When most bosses are close to being beaten, the game will make them immune to taking a hit at one point which often gives them a free hit to a player that's attempting a combo. I verified this myself. Just a little trick by Konami to try to drain another quarter without it seeming obvious. I love it regardless. I'd be okay if they don't include that in this version.
There was a small sporting goods shop in my local area that had a back room for arcade games. I spent a lot of time there. That's where I played 6-player X-Men the most. It was a strange place to see the deluxe cabinet, and the back room was probably a bit too small as it was cramped in there due to the giant cabinet. I was disappointed they didn't keep the game long. Perhaps it was due to the sheer size of it, or because the fighting-game craze had already begun, but it was great fun while it lasted. I once joined in on a game where there was one open spot. It was Dazzler, of course. It was always Dazzler. I knew the joysticks and buttons wouldn't be worn from use. I was happy to just join in. It was cool to be a part of a six-player game and beat it. The difficulty didn't scale as well to multiple players as the Turtles games did, which was both a pro and a con. Having played the game a ton, I can say Dazzler is my second favorite character to play. She's very well rounded in the game.
first thing that caught my eye, was the demo sprites look like the are floating. If you compare it to the arcade you can see they are missing the shadow under the sprite that makes it look like they touching the ground.
Please keep updating us on this
This is so badass, I absolutely want to hear updates! I need to mod my Saturn already so I can play it
This is looking really good! I am definitely on board with this and would love to see it completed. I'd play the crap out of this just like I did back in the arcade!
And yes, I would definitely like updates when they're available!
Awesome time to be an X-men fan. This….97….and I’m almost done w a 4 player X-men arcade restore!
It was a great game, I’m shocked a console version was never ported (besides Xbox360/PS3 arcade download). I like what I see on the Saturn version, enough that it might have convinced me at the time that a Saturn was worth the price tag. An opportunity was missed by not releasing this.
Until this video I didn't know there even was a 2 player arcade version. Even going back to when it came out I've only ever seen the 4 and 6 player versions. I always thought it was strange there wasn't one, but turns out it did exist this entire time. Learned something new.
And, yes, just like with Doom on the 32x, please keep us informed! And to anyone who worked on this who might be reading this great job!
When the game came out, the advertisements showed the four and six-player cabinets. I didn't see any two-player cabinets for a while. It's possible they didn't come out until later and might have been offered as conversions. I know with the international version of the two-player game, they made changes like incorporating power ups, so that lends credence to my idea they came out later on.
@@ravagingwolverine That does make sense.
Our college arcade had the six player one and we wore that poor machine out. At one point, Storm could only walk backwards. No regrets though, that game was awesome.
Yes please to update videos on this 🙌🏻
Definitely want to follow the progress of this. This is my all time fave arcade beat em up. I would buy a retail version of this in a heartbeat if it existed.
@Sega Lord X please Keep us updated brother... It looks great already, and the Saturn is the perfect system for this...
I think its crazy that the 6 player cabinet is super rare. You're not the first place I've heard this. In Denver, CO back in the day, the 6 player cabinet was in all the arcades I went to. I saw only a few 4 player cabs. I thought that those were the rare ones back in the day. Even when I go to barcades now days, it seems I see the 6 player cabs. So interesting.
While I have quite a few memories of this game in the arcade, i've revisited this game via emulation. In my honest opinion, it was pretty good for its time, but it doesn't come close to holding up to the Capcom beat em ups of the day. And of course Streets of Rage 2 and 3 were the best beat em ups back then. Still, X-men was definitely a footnote in beat em up history.
You have to understand that the majority of US towns are not anywhere near the size of Denver. The 6 player cab would have been targeted for a place like Denver. In my area, you'd have to drive 3 hours to DC to find one. These days(2024), barcades and the like specialize in rescuing cabs like the 6 player, so you tend to see them more now in lower population areas.
With the success of the new animated X-Men show, they should give this game a remake/sequel like Shredders Revenge.
The mall in Durham, NC had the 6 player cabinet back in the day. Really wish the intro animation didn't have the animated series music as this was based off Pryde of the X-Men.
I heard Disneys working on a new arcade game X-Women featuring over powered female characters that fight and overpower men.
🤢🤮 they can keep it!
Sounds fake and gay
I hope you had tears running during your comment 😂
I still have the xbox 360 port. I do have the arcade ports on mod consoles and pandora box. But that Sega Saturn version I am dying to play!
