I have always worn the chucks and the addidas lifting shoes but I started lifting barefoot about a month ago and it feels so much better. Like someone mentioned in the comments, I feel more connected and my foot pain subsided.
Hi Danny, thank you for this video. Switching to barefoot shoes was a game-changer for me. They let my feet move naturally, which helped improve my posture and balance. Over time, I noticed my feet and legs getting stronger too. I wear Hykes Escapes, and they’re comfortable, minimalist, and durable. It’s like getting back to the way our feet are supposed to work.
I honestly didn't know about the shoes being important while squatting. THANKYOU for the info, it will definitely come in handy as i am getting back into the gym this week
Thank you for the recomendation, I was using a heavy cushioned shoe to the gym and it was killing me, now moved to a pair of Puma Roma and the upgrade was huge.
I was looking this topic up and your video was the first to come up. Very informative. I’m opting for chucks or vans and you basically helped me decide to go that route. I currently do a full body workout from chris jones (Pumpchasers) and I think the chucks or the vans for me will work well for my back squats and deadlifts. Appreciate the video.
Great video, the extra infomation on specific lift requirements really makes a difference to someone who does not know the reasons why people wear different shoes in different lifts.
I have been doing all of my lifting and gym work in a basic Puma and love them. Nice flex in the foot. Pretty flat heal to toe and low top. They really do it all well with just enough insole cousin to be comfortable
This needs updated... what about metcons, nano x, nobulls and shoes with a wider toe box for better grounding and better spread of power with the triangle shape of your foot? shoes with minimal drop and solid sole. Yes converse are ok, but there are better options with that type of sole. Sal, Adam, and Justin are all just die hard chuck taylor guys, and I don't get it... You should never sacrifice with the one thing that delivers ground force energy and keeps you balanced on your feet. Love the channel all of the info that you put out! Forever a Mind Pump fanatic
Great video, can you do a video explaining the differences between Deadlift and Sumo Deadlift? One great tip I learned was to put plates under my heels to simulate squat shoes. Helps tremendously while I work on my ankle mobility. Also means I don’t have to carry two pairs of sneakers.
the summo make the back (down) work less but for real it doesnt matter its wich one you feel confortable with usually taller people with long legs long arms go sumo and shorter go normal
started gym recently, bought new shoes(from wearing only socks at home), and with the same weights, same exercises...., performed 1/3 of my reps bc the shoe is too high and cant even balance myself, and i dont even squat or deadlift!
For me, lifting shoes makes it harder to hold front rack position doing front squats, you really have to keep your chest up and core braced. I prefer flats doing front squats
Timely video Danny cuz just last night i did kinda 2 workouts in one one. A Full Body Db workout which I use my NIKE dsx reppers old crosstrainers flats. I use these all purpose Nike crossfit type shoes not for running. I decided to do front squats with the sneaker u had in the video Adidas powerlifts shoes different color though, it keeps me upright very vertical on front squats which are designed for that, its like Heels vs Flats. The Sole is stable so it bears the brunt well on squats front and back esp. heavy squat. Front squats are never easy for me no matter what shoe, its the hardest exercise in the gym i dont see it done often. I dont like the squat shoe for deadlift because it tilts u forward increasing the angle of dead pull but it can be used at high volume/lighter weights

I've been using my reebok oly lifters for a long time (you brought a good point about the deadlifting situation, i was having the same problem) and just realized that I have a pair of chuck taylors mid top with a cushion around the ankles. I've been seeing people wearing the high top versions, is there a difference with the low, mid or high tops when it comes to squat and deadlifts?
Sup Zo I use low vans with laces some people buy the high top vans with laces but I feel more comfortable with low laces since you can tie your shoe tighter if needed when lifting
Some skate shoes work quite well actually. You have to be careful though they have sandpaper to stand on we either have wood or cement. The shoes nike and new balance make are crap for gyms. Circa work quite well if you can find a skateshop that is a vendor. They are also made to a higher quality than DVS or Globe. I do not understand why Circa or DVS don't take an existing skate shoe and modify it slightly for weightlifting and sell a weightlifting version. The thing with actual weightlifting shoes they are like standing on a brick I had some it was better to just take my shoes off.
I've worn Converse Chucks for my whole life. I see the better athletes at the gym wearing them also. I just like to be able to feel the ground whether lifting or just out and about. There's nothing artificial in the feel. Man was designed to go barefoot and these are the closest to it.

Everyone i've seen measure converse is always surpriswd ro fins that they are actually in the 3-4% range while this is only noticeable when switching from shoes that are actually zero drop it's good to not follow the hype
Converse: the first minimalist shoe. If you go straight from lifting in cushioned shoes to something like Converse or Xero or VivoBarefoot, you will probably injure yourself. That's because padded shoe soles have been pampering your feet your entire life. Why do you think some of the best lifters in the world do it barefoot? They're not genetically anomalous gigachads, they trained properly and hard. Do not jump right to wearing them for everything. Start wearing minimalist shoes in your free time, and your feet will get stronger over time. After awhile, start wearing them to work if you walk around alot during work. Then hiking if you do that. The last thing you should work your way up to with minimalist shoes is running long distance or sprinting, or lifting heavy. And when you start doing those things while wearing them, start slow rather than going for a 45 minute run with them on. We've been lied to. Our feet have gone soft, so of course runners get injuries all the time and alot of people who switch to minimalist shoes and wear them 24/7 get injured. Nature versus nurture...it's a choice, and nature is the harder route.
