Hiya Folks! Welcome to the end of patch 9.1, Chains of Domination. We get to see Anduin’s message left behind with Varian’s compass while he goes hiking with the Jailer.
Uther & Jaina finally talk about Arthas, Thrall and Mama Draka talk about Papa Garrosh & Darian talks about Tirion Fordring with Papa Mograine. Juicy lore time!

It was about time Jaina reunited with Uther.
Arthas has such a legacy in Warcraft, the minute he's mentioned his memory dominates a scene and I love it.

Glad to see I’m not the only one. Anytime I hear Arthas or key characters mention Arthas, you immediately get the jolt feeling rush in, and can’t help but hear that iconic theme in the background. Arthas movie when?!

He's the best character in Warcraft, and one of my favorite characters period. He is the fallen prince archetype done to perfection. His actions at Stratholme were rooted in grim necessity, and seeing his fall from there was perfectly done.
Uther to jaina be like: “so right before arthas was gonna kill me I told him that there was a special place in hell waiting for him, little did he know I dropped him in that special place in hell, hah!”

Uthor is sharing memories of Arthas before he took up Frostmorne. In the Sylvannas/Anduin cutscenes, it’s noted that your will starts to slip away when you become compelled and bound to the jailer. So it’s no surprise that Jaina and uthor wants to talk about Arthas through that lens.
I mean he did it out of spite?? i may be wrong ofc, but seems like everyone is coming full circle in this arc. hopefully we do hear of Arthas in the future and not let him just be a damned memory :(

Grindfest? I started back up in 9.1 and hit the renown cap each week by gearing/having fun in other aspects? If you think grinding renown is a grindfest, then I highly doubt you played any MMO seeing how this is super easy shit you senseless troll.

Oh and renown is nothing but a time gate. Now if you want to have Alts it’s an even bigger problem and let’s not forget about switching covenants because of changes blizz makes

Poor Anduin afraid that people would start to call him a traitor and compare him to Arthas
Well the people didn't start calling Arthas a traitor after he became a death knight. He became a traitor to Lordaeron's eyes when he massacred an entire city. Sure, they welcomed him back-not knowing he's a death knight already-but him killing his father only added to their mistrust.
I don't think they would be too harsh to Anduin since everyone knows he is being controlled. If they do, Jaina is there to likely protect him since she knows first hand how it is like to see a righteous man be corrupted.

Because he only saw her as the enemy and not the one who fought and gave her life for her people and got dominated after.

The only reason WoW brought back Arthas’ storyline is because they know the power he holds over the loyal fan base. He’s THE best character they created

His caracter was good in warcraft 3, more than a decade ago when we were kid. He's now just a corrupted prince, pretty bland.
I like how people called out the garrosh cutscenes because a fan made version was lip synced while the original was not and now the Anduin one is lip synced.

Sadly Garrosh felt the harsh reality of blizzard writers, from amazing warchief who went as far to try to defend the cliff walker tribe in stone talon with honor to a corrupted maniac pushing things way too far.

In game, Garrosh only says he feels he might be unprepared for the life of a ruler, but he will strive to be worthy of the honor. Not exactly like Thrall forced him, he never even refused.

Exactly the reason I stopped playing. Too much resource grinding that were just daily/weekly chores. Busy work.
Nah just renown. There's no "grinding conduits", they have a very high drop rate and once you get them it's forever. You also don't grind soulbinds as they get automatically unlocked with renown. Soul ash and shards of domination are irrelevant to get access to the story.

And no, you don't have to be suscribed for 6 fucking months, the whole story of 9.1 ended this week, it took about 2 months or so. As far as cringe goes, cringe is the only reason I've replied and am replying at all, I cringe when people bitch and moan about stuff that's not real and employ mental gymnastics to be in a state of perpetual dissatisfaction. I don't mind people being dissatisfied (there are many aspects of the game I'm dissatisfied with myself), so long as they're not just blatantly making stuff up to fuel their bitching.

I'm a bit disappointed that Blizz didn't put in the small effort to make their mouths actually move while they talked. It's so sad to see them not care anymore after all the effort they've put in.
Came for more Arthas content, stayed for Uther and Jaina reunited. That was worth it.
I was really disappointed. Expected Uther happy to see that Jaina survived and became a strong woman, but the dialogue was just a woman confessing that she is still in love with the villain and an old man saying that she should continue to honor a love that has not brought her anything good, except a great sense of guilt.
Darion forgot to mention that after Tirion, tauren paladin named Mooburger picked up Ashbringer and wielded it with much greater effect
he also forgot that another tauren Buggernmu weilded not 1 but 2 ashbringers at once with much more greater effect ! also forgot that now the ashbringer is stucked in sargeras blade ...

Facst! The music started playing behind Jaina and Uther and I felt the lump in my throat grow.
My favorite part in 9.1. Nothing better then seeing past dead characters uniting with their former relationships. Mama Draka and Thrall, Papa Mograine & Darion, and Uther& Jaina talking about Arthas love hits the right spot real good!
It fucking baffles me that we're not getting this kind of stories as the main focus. I couldn't give less of a fuck about Zovaal or the covenants, you know why? Because Blizzard pulled them out of their asses for this expansion and put them in the center of the story with little to no build up or development. You know who had build up and development? Jaina. Thrall. Draka. The Mograines. Bolvar. Arthas. Uther. Y'know, the ones relegated to ingame dialogues after the main story is done.
Gotta say it was nice to see all the characters get some closure, but on to other stuff. We are confirmed that Zoval was the original Arbiter and also kinda confirmed that Azeroth is very important in the life/death cycle. As Primus said, after he gets the information he needs, whatever that may be, he will come straight for Azeroth

Yes exposition in a story can often times be seen as lazy writing, but whatever wow is doing is the opposite of exposition.

Nah he shouldn't die unless Blizzard goes around retconning things again. There is a comic with an old Anduin standing with Velen as they prepare for the "final fight" against the final enemy.

our baby boy Darian finally got to reconcile with his father and even hear from Mograine that he's proud of him, every Death Knight from the Maw to Acherus stands in the attention of our amazing Ebon Blade.
That was cool, but I just don't like how they keep trying to make it like being a death knight is just some choice they've all made like they just decided to join the royal guard or something. It's forced upon them except for a few like Baron Rivendare who gave their souls up willingly.
Arthas' Story is among the saddest I've heard. He just wanted to save his people, but became the very thing he swore to destroy. Kind of reminds me of Darth Vader's legacy and story, just different setting and characters

Its 2021 these in-game cutscenes need more animations than just the standing idle animation.
I don't think those are cutscenes, I believe it's just dialogue between the characters that is being filmed from a first person view. If they are though, that'd be pretty sad.

Wow , I got goosebumbs when at the conversation between Jaina and Uther when the music kicked in.
Warcraft 3 and Arthas' story is probably the best thing Blizzard made ever.
jaine and uther meeting again should have been an ingame cinematic at the very least.
Why? It's really not that important or impactful for what the two are to each other. At the end of the day, they're still just two people that once worked together and have become vastly different people. Neither one mentions the other the entire time they've been apart in a manner that would suggest they have been waiting for this moment. It's a welcome moment, but it's still just "meeting that person you worked with 20 years ago".
That's when Arthas comes to make a family reunion with these two ;)
to me it was the only interesting conversation in this whole campaign, rest of the story is just boring

they didnt bother to give one for garroshs final death (didnt even have thrall there to witness it), they didnt give one for ner'zhuls final death (the original fckn lich king and responsible for arthas), they didnt give one for kel'thuzads final death (ner'zhuls and later arthas's most trusted servant, and almost as important as them in the lore)
why should a meeting between jaina and uther get more attention than these hugely important characters, who all got shafted.
Man, if there's something I do really love is the orchestral work put in this game, they deserve a ton of recognition. Makes me wanna grab my violin again.

I've always said that Arthas is the Anakin Skywalker of the Warcraft universe.
Actually Arthas' story was made based on Anakin. So yeah he is basically wow's version of Darth Vader
The way the music always transits from normal background music to Arthas or the Lich King's theme, when they talk about Arthas, always gives me the chills. It's just SO good.
I kinda feel they're saving Arthas the same way Square did with Sephiroth on the original FFVII back then. Saving him for a spectacular reveal, or.. a lame one.
I used to want blizzard to bring back arthas. Now I know the best thing is for them not to ruin the only good character they have left.

@@Roald94 I don't think it was needed then, and it isn't now. Illidan was against the Legion and the villains of TBC were Kael'thas and Kil'jaeden.
The Lich King was the villain in his expansion, but many quests throughout tell you about Arthas being consumed by evil, and his humanity holding back the true strength of the LK. Then they release that book to say Arthas was the ruling personality in it, and nobody liked it. Now they retcon it again to say it was the Jailer. Feels like at some point they'll do a similar questline to Matthias Lehner as a sendoff but the only thing needed here was for them not to fuck up on the first place.
And I started playing the original 7 yesterday for first time.

Uther and Jaina, their talk, who they talked about, how the reunion feels bittersweet, that scene right there... priceless. It takes me back to playing Warcraft 3 when I was 13 and wondering how the story will end. now 12 years later, I can say I'm happy to see it grow to how it did.
It's one thing to watch, play and be part of WoW but it's another to grow with it. (me holding back tears).

That’s a wonderful memory and you said it perfectly. The lines, the delivery and images you get as they talk makes it one of the better conversations in Shadowlands. The best thing about WoW and Warcraft spanning many years is indeed getting the chance to grow with it all!

Out of all this nonsense, as soon as i hear Arthas in a conversation, i am suddenly interested. And... the 'memory' inside the Locket really does not give Sylvanas any blue points. And i'd say that now, being whole again, she kinda needs a a few tons of the stuff.

I really enjoyed the small talks between them, specifically Vanari and the attendant guy. She's quite sneaky. Gives me few giggles while she tried to make the attendant guy spill some beans.

@Ben To each their own but, I think most would disagree. The only thing WOW is currently better at is tab targeting and the map system. Even the very first version of it, A Realm Reborn which came out in 2013 and isn't even the good part is better than Shadowlands by an absolute mile.

The other faction leaders, who's support Thrall promised him, turned on him almost immediately. Vol'jin threatened his life, Cairne challenged him to Mak'gora, Sylvanas and Lor'themar were pre-occupied with their own business in the Eastern Kingdoms, so the only support he had from within the Horde were the oldschool Orcs who wanted to kick ass and take names like they did in the Northrend campaign. It's not that Garrosh's actions were good, or even justifiable; the "Garrosh did nothing wrong" meme is just a shitpost version of the real argument being made, that Thrall was ultimately responsible for a very predictable series of events. If I threw a rabid dog into a basement with a couple of kids and leave them for a few days, it'd my fault when I came back and found them dead at the hands of the dog. Thraka's assurance that "nah mate, it totally wasn't anything to do with you, he chose to do the only thing that made sense to him in those particular circumstances into which you put him because, like, uh, destiny or summat. lol." rings completely hollow, and I can't even believe that they're still running damage control for green-jesus after Metzen has been gone for five years already.

The reason Thrall had no power in Legion was literally because the elements abandoned him after he used them to cheat in the Mak'gora. Using magic to win was cheating when Thrall did it just like it was cheating when Gul'Dan and Sylv did it.

Yes, and no. I've long considered the "solution" to the predestination/free will "problem" exists. To make it an oversimplification, consider a universe with a God that has decided the course of time, but uses creations with free will to get there. So how do you do it?
Suppose you have three friends/minnions. One is a hothead, one is contemplative and hyperrational, and one is compassionate and caring. Basically, Lt Worf, Lt Commander Data, and Doctor Crusher from Star Trek, let's say.
So if you were Picard and wanted a war to start, which would you send? Probably Worf (maybe Crusher). If, on the other hand, you wanted a scientific discovery or to talk a killer robot out of going on a rampage, who would you send? Data, like as not. But if you had a suicidal person that you want to save who just needed someone to listen with compassion and understanding? Crusher would be your choice.
Now, you don't mind control them, but you DO know how they would behave in a given situation. So then all you need to do...is manage to get the right person into a given situation to achieve your desired outcome.
So the solution to this puzzle is easy:
Give people free will...and just arrange events to where the person that would make the right/desired decision is the one that is in the situation to make it. In essence, the only "choice" removed is who ends up in the situation, but you need not mind control them to get them there, only arrange situations where they would be the one that ends up there. Then, you let their free will take its course, where their personality and natural proclivities lead to the desired outcome by their own personal choices based on their personalities.

Some people don't quite understand how this makes sense, and it is a bit convoluted, but it is the only true solution I've ever found to the problem.
But the short version is, if Fate NEEDED someone to become what Garrosh was, then Fate simply needed to realize Garrosh was the perfect warmongering hothead that would do that, and then rig events so that he would be first found by Thrall and then promoted by him.
The second piece of it, of course, is that Fate is up to a lot of things. It's not JUST that Fate needed someone to become Garrosh Hellscream, Warchief. Fate ALSO needed someone to become Thrall the Earth Warder, someone to become Vol'Jin, the Rebel, and so on. Fate needed all of these rolls filled, and so from there, it's a matter of properly allocating people and having them meet at the right time and in the right sequence to get the desired end result...

@@leightonmiller1267 Except it's exactly what happened. Garrosh told Thrall many times that he wouldn't be a good leader. Told him that he was a Warrior and didn't have what it took to be a ruler. Thrall everytime told him he'd do great and was the leader they needed. Thrall talked him into it plain and simple.
Garrosh said he was too much of a warrior, but Thrall left him with council to make up for his shortcomings. Thrall could not have expected that Blizz would make Garrosh into a fascist. What Garrosh stood for could not have been accounted for (superiority, enslavement, genocide), and Blizz's shitty writing is making Thrall too hung up on it. When Garrosh started he was a warrior willing to listen, when he was a warchief he was killing (or trying) those who opposed him.

I call it. Anduin will escape the Jailor because Arthas will break from the Mourneblade and free Anduin from Jailors influence. Probably being completly erased in the process.
I will be honest. I have stopped playing since cataclysm and then decided to learn the lore as it is now (just out of curiosity).
What i have to say is: the lore and story is not as bad people say it is. In fact some of it is pretty good (aside for the obvious Mary Sue mode Sylvanas).
Just a small addendum: Everyone is saying that "visit the afterlife is a bad narrative choice", I disagree exploring the afterlife has some good potential (especially in a high-fantasy setting). most of my favorites D&D/Pathfinder games were me and my homies exploring the outer planes (the afterlife in the "D&D verse"). i will never forget those moments where we plunged into the Abyss and flyed up to the top of Mount Celestia.
People have wildly over exaggerated the story telling in WoW. Each zone had plenty of good story during the leveling and covenant campaigns. The main story is what most people are interested in, and that’s been a swinging pendulum between awesome (Tyrande going on a suicide mission to kill sylvanus) to horrible (tyrande getting thwarted last minute with no prior indication or reason, undermining the whole point of the character arc). They can never chain multiple good points together without some bizarre choice or mess causing you to scratch you head and wonder why they did it at all. I know the phrase “show not tell” is usually a good way to help people feel connected, but there’s been too much showing and not enough tell. We see the stuff happen, and have no understanding of it. Once they correct that, the story will improve by leaps and bounds

Kael talks about how he wishes he killed Kel'thuzad and the accuser talks to him about it. Its a nice moment. Tbh i have no clue if this perhaps is just something you get from clearing the raid or something to that extent but figured id share
When Jaina meeting Uther again, it was so wholesome like a family bond. I wish we can find Arthas and help him redeem.

I don't play WoW, but I still read some of the lore.
Warcraft 3 was the very first game I played, and I was only 6 by that time. I kept replaying the campaign COUNTLESS times because I just love this game too much. Almost 15 years from now, to see Jaina met Uther talked about Arthas after a long goddamn period and what she had gone through, it truly warms my heart.
