In this new timeline, he was manipulating Leviathan, going to fail to kill supergirl and going to die.

Why is brainiac dying? I haven't seen up to this point. Can someone explain?
the room has some type of radiation that kills everyone unless the person is wearing a especial medal.
luthor was teaming up with brainiac-5 to destroy leviatan, he infiltrated leviatan and got the medal, but instead of destroying leviatan using brainiac's code, he instead wanted to wait for the superfriends to be destroyed.
so brainiac-5 went in with no protection and uploaded the code and put leviatan in a brainiac jar (the ones brainiacs used to use to steal planets), so leviatan could not destroy the superfriends, but now luthor has the jar with leviatan and was last seen putting it in one of his machines that drain aliens of their powers and will use that and his intellect to destroy the superfriends on his own.

You'd think Lex would be smart enough to just kill Brainiac instead of wandering off and assuming nothing will happen. Or maybe it's his inner sadist since he'll just assume that even if he survives his friends won't forgive him.
You're not wrong. As the way things left off, it's pretty clear whenever season 6 arrives Nia will save him, they'll get back together(which would make me happy 😊) & brainy will reunite with the Superfriends & like season 4 before, Lex will be defeated despite getting so close due to as you accurately put it egotistical sadism & predictable need to assume nothing will go wrong.
We didn’t saw Brainy death so maybe he is gonna be saved by Nia in the next season!

Whether the majority cast is men or the majority cast is women, the story & characters is what should keep you invested. & if that's not the case then we're you even a fan to begin with? Plus given most shows in general the majority of cast is men anyways yet you have 1 of the few Superhero shows where it's the reverse but that's a problem? GTFOH.
