- Is there really a right way to configure your FX? We've all been told that time based effects benefit from running post-preamp so that your actual guitar signal stays cleaner. But, do we want that all the time?

I am an "on again, off again" type of FX loop guy. My Germino Club 40 does not have an FX loop. I have used attenuators without a loop and ran everything in front. Then I got the Fryette PS100 with a loop and used that. The Fryette works awesome, but it started having technical issues for other reasons. So I purchased the Tone King II 100w attenuator and used it at the last gig. Because the Germino is a 4-hole amp, I ran the effects send and return by jumping the channels and used the 2nd volume as the "volume" for the effects side. It actually worked really well. Very impressed by the Tone King too. I like the solo boost foot pedal. In another band, I play heavier stuff and have a Suhr Badger 35 that has an effects loop and I use it. Like Mr. Tubbs said, playing anything with heavy gain or pushing the amp more, I agree the effects loop is a little more crucial. It becomes harder to dial in modulation effects in front of the amp of a heavily driven amp. YMMV.

i use the effects loop on the D20. i like having a single chain with just my ODs going in front and the wet stuff sounds totally fine in the loop

The only amp that I use the Loop on is indeed my 120 MKiii. As I started learning about how Loops work, I continued to think, "Why would I go through all that cabling and hassle to have one (dirty) channel in front of the time based stuff? Is the sound of that one channel that good?" So I stayed away from that and focused on clean amps and used pedals for preamp & drives, all into the front. Once I decided on the 120, I knew I wanted the loop setup because I have 4 channels to build around vs 1 or 2. TOTALLY WORTH IT!
All that being said, I'm looking into the D25 more and more, but IDK if I can justify it if I'm just going straight in, BUT I am wanting a more flexible combo than my Princeton and Deluxe Reverbs. I love the Idea of chugging with a 1x12 combo, and otherwise pretty and clean stuff. The Fenders cannot do that.

It always kinda bugs me when people are ranting about amps coming out nowadays with no fx loop, and how that can’t do without one, and how every amp needs to have them, etc., etc.. Especially about things like the Fender Tone Master amps which model 60s amps that never had fx loops. We have decades of great guitar music made with amps that had no fx loops. Personally, I tried putting effects in loop but didn’t see any need for it at all. The only things I’ve really found them useful for is putting EQ between the pre and power section so that I could boost certain frequencies without driving the preamp, or separating the pre and power amps so that I can mix them with *other* pre and power amps.

Thanks Shawn! FX Loop are cool 😎 I use a TC Plethora X3 in FX loop of G20, and it works great (in my opinion). An by the way - this guitar seems to be for you like The Excalibur for King Arthur ???

Tried and tried again many times and just never got along with FX loops. I’ll do all in front of a cleanish amp or run a mini mixer for wet FXs post amp if I need amp dirt.

Never use one. I CAN run extra cables for the time modulating stuff but that is more time as well as more than can go wrong at a gig. While I can hear the diffrrence the audience cannot.
It's truly up to the individual! The majority of the listeners won't care unless they're guitar nerds like us!! Go with what works for you!
I started playing in the 70's. There was no such thing as an effects loop. Ergo, I don't see what all the fuss is about.
I agree but, within those parameters, there really wasn't a need.
Over the years, especially in the late 80s through 90's there was a bit of a "revolution" for lack of a better term. Session players like Steve Lukather, Dann Huff, and Buzz Feiten were using "high channel gain" and it was very difficult to place the more modern delays and reverbs of the time to the front of the channel. The idea of an FX loop was much needed.
