Prize Fighter (Sega CD) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

  • A playthrough of Sega's 1994 FMV boxing game for the Sega CD, Prize Fighter.
Fought and defeated all four boxers in the game, and all dropped within the first round.
I love the black-and-white look of this game! It looks super clean compared to most Sega CD FMV games, and it suits the tone that's so nicely set up by the cool intro.
I did turn training mode on to enable those little arrows around the video windows. I had most of the timings memorized, but they were a useful guide if I wasn't sure how to read a particular move. If you try to play solely by using those arrows, well, good luck. You'll never be able to press them fast enough to keep up with the pace of the match.
This is the entire playthrough, I didn't cut any matches out, including the multiple fights to raise my fighter's level to stand a chance against the other opponents. I've listed the times for each below:
    3:26 vs. Honeyboy
    12:48 vs. Mega Joe
    21:32 vs. T Rex
    36:15 vs. Nuke the Duke
45:03 - Secret bonus movie - a behind-the-scenes, making of featurette (in color) of Prize Fighter.
Man I was lucky taking out Nuke with that first knockdown - I was really wondering if I'd be able to pull off a win against him with how low my power points were. Lots of memorization to this one.
The game also had a fair number of recognizable faces in it, including Ben Bray (from Iron Man), Michael Buffer (the famous 'let's get ready to rumble!' announcer guy), Dick Miller (Gremlins), and some famous stuntmen like Gene Lebell.

And we started talking about this game because it was a Xmas present for me when we were both growing up. I could not believe that I found it on UA-cam. I can't for the life of me remember who requested that I do this (to whom I responded 'not likely'), but whoever you are, after an eternity, here it is! Hope it was worth the wait.
This is one of those games that has to grow on you. The novelty of the FMV wears off long before you really have an intuitive understanding of how to play it - if you stick with it, though, the game can be extremely fun.

+NintendoComplete I did actually when you posted the first Mad Dog McCree. You said you didn't know if your patience level could handle it. I guess you could. I'm glad I checked back in cause I could never beat this game as a kid because I relied on the arrows. You're right about the reaction time never being fast enough to win the fights. I think I won the first two, but never saw the ending. Thanks for posting it so that I could see how it ended.

Say what you want about the gameplay itself, but the production values of this are amazing. The cast is awesome, with the particular stand-out being Gene LeBell as the ref, and you can tell there was real skill with the direction. It pretty much feels like a Hollywood production. The music is also great, with the opponent's theme being really awesome. I really wish the canceled Saturn port would have come out, as it would have great to have a version with better video quality.
Two interesting things about this game: First, here is a really fantastic ending where the little kid ends up giving up his crutches and running across the ring to The Kid, but it's really hard to get since you have to TKO Nuke, which is extremely difficult to do both because it's hard not to lose before you manage it, and also, the game really likes to end the fight before you get to three knockdowns.
Secondly, if you train yourself up too much trying to make the game too easy, eventually when you enter a fight, you will just automatically lose immediately, making the game unwinnable and essentially ruining your game if you saved just before it starts. I have no idea if this is a bug or intentional programming, but it is really infuriating if you're a long way into the game.

So funny story. When I was a kid we were gifted a Sega CD with a bunch of games, sewer sharks, night trap, dark wizard, a few more I can't remember and this. Lucky me right, but this game is a two disc game, my copy only came with one number 2. So I could only fight trex with no experience or skill points. I could land ten punches in a row and he still would do more damage with just one. I've seen every knock out animation and they're hilarious 😂. Fun times.

nice job. I played the hell out of this game in my youth. Have you ever beaten nuke by decision? I did it one time. It's so incredibly difficult. You have to crank your stamina way up while keeping your punch power low to avoid a knockout. After making all the first round hits, you have to throw as many punches possible during the first 30-60 seconds of round 2 then block and move during the rest of the round. Don't go down!! 3rd round same as 2nd round strategy. If you survive and hopefully land enough punches the cutscene is both cool, and albeit cheesy, but I have yet to find it on UA-cam. Challenge???

This game looks really dang good imo other than how terrible it looks when you block, not sure why they didn’t just use a real video capture of a block like everything else. Still not sure why games nowadays aren’t made like some of these sega cd games with real video instead of cgi like all games nowadays. I know Night Trap caused a big stink about video game violence. But I have watched a bunch of sega cd video gameplay and the system seemed way better than I would think any system could do at that time. Crazy it really didn’t do all that well. What I want to see is all of the matches ending in decision and that you win the decision, especially the championship match.

Well it avoids the grainy washed-out look of most Sega CD games by being entirely in black-and-white. Plus you can frame it as a tribute to Raging Bull. Pretty clever!

This game was trying to be Raging Bull.

I cancelled HBO when they cancelled boxing. It was the main reason I paid for HBO and they took it away.

Not a game of my taste but the style is really interesting. I don't know if they did it with the limitations of the Sega CD in mind but the B&W footage suffers the resolution and palette limits much less than if it was in color.
