Thank y'all for the video history needs to be told just imagine the battles, the life of the people involved in wars who lived in the middle of this and the ones fighting. God bless America
Love the story of the soldiers both stopping to see their mother as this was released on Mother's Day. Speaking of which...I need to make a phone call.
1100 men held off General Sherman's 65,000 men for hours on end in the battle of Monteith Swamp. It was a battle at the Effingham Chatham county lines. General Sherman had to get though to get to Savannah. 800 of the 1100 men were from North Carolina. General Hardee had 10,000 men but left Savannah and headed North. It left Savannah for General Sherman to walk right in.
Im sure there are still a lot of locations that have not been discovered yet. Everybody knows about the major battles but very few know about all the minor skirmishes.
I agree. At cold harbor in 1864, my great great grand dad was wounded at 2nd cold harbor and recovered at a home that was demolished in 1981, to build new houses where my mom lives now. Talk about a small world. Earthworks are still visible, but are on private land, within 1000 feet of mom's house. Her house is less than 5 minutes drive from many battlefields from beaver dam creek to second cold harbor, including many cemeteries and the garthrite house (sic),a hospital. I learned much just walking as a young man.
My ancestors fought under Robert F Hoke in the NC 61 and 66 infantry regiments from Cold Harbor - Richmond/ Petersburg VA - Ft Fisher - Forks rd - Wyse Forks - Bentonville - Joe Johnston's surrender to Sherman.
Two brothers, one Confederate one Union, that saw their mother just a few days apart. That is a wonderful story and the best part is they both lived.
Chris Fonvielle's book on the Wilmington Campaign is a great read.

We just made UA-cam videos in that direction.
How about a little recognition for the Southern men who held off heavy odds in the defense of their country??
