Loving that livery. Looks good on any locomotive.
@@middle_digit sure it'll look good on the N's too once they inevitably buy them (and possibly more) outright.
A70 - She looks beautiful again. Love the tiger livery
Great video, good to see her back in operation, that livery looks fantastic!
@ComengProductions it's a shame more of those freight A's weren't saved, now there's only 5 of the original 11 in existance.
Don't worry, A78 was donated to SRHC. However she's still in Bendigo awaiting movement to Seymour.
Excellent footage from someone who knows how to present locomotives from their best angles. I caught the A70 in 2000 when it was doing mainline passenger duties. Wasn’t a big fan of V Line livery but gosh, she looks great now she’s with Southern Short haul.
fantastic video mate, it is awesome to see another A back in almost service. Very nice, look forward to seeing 70 out and about soon
Great footage mate! Keep up the good work. Great to see the Old Girl back !
It’s wonderful to see this locomotive back on the rails again, nice video mate!
Well had SSR not decided to get it, would have just kept rotting at Newport. Would have definitely been the hardest to restore as it was picked for parts for A66, and then A62 when it was restored.
@@aidanthomas2510 Yeah, it's a good thing SSR came to restore it
@kclassproductions absolutely. Would have been nice if PN had allowed them to take A78 too, as Seymour don't really need it with A60 and it'd be nice to see 2 A's in this livery.
@@aidanthomas2510 It would be cool seeing them double head a train
Nothing makes a better mechanical noise than a 2-stroke turbo EMD prime mover.
Quite a transformation, a lot of work and money went into it, although I am not a fan of the "A" (I prefer the old "B" class) the video was excellent. With the push for clean emissions I hope they remedy the smoke blowing.
Wow, she looks good! 😍
And beautifully captured. 👌
Yeah great catch indeed a70. Looking good in it's new colours 😊😊
Probably needs a few tweaks still, idle being one. And not gonna lie I don't know how I feel about those name plates. But good to see it running again nonetheless, and glad to see it's lost none of it's sound or it's leslie horn.
Great video!🎉
Keep it up pannier great videos
No matter what they do to them call them an A modify the engines etc they appeal because they are basically a B class locomotive the best looking Diesels in the world 🇦🇺👌👍great video
A70 looks amazing
style, grace, great paint job. i think the same as everyone else in the comment section.
The engine is hunting at idle
Astounding!
I'm impressed really am .
A70 blowing a fair bit of smoke
Sounds like it was hunting in idle while at Kangaroo Flat Stn, a few kinks to iron out but well done to the BRW crew!
A70 is cool!
Awesome Video!
Just trying to remember, was A70 the locomotive that was pulling the passenger service on the Stony Point line for many years?
Nice video, I’ve heard that A70 was once geared for 160kph operation, I wonder why it was undone (presumably)
Think you will find A85 is the only one reported to have been regeared to 160km/h operation purely for bogie testing.
As for why it would have been undone, after testing was complete there was no need/space for the locomotive to run that fast, and the 160km/h gearing would have actually weakened the locomotives pulling power and acceleration in exchange for the increased speed resulting it being unable to keep up with her classmates on stop/start trains.
Of course, the exact opposite can also be applied. The slower you gear it, the more it can pull so i wouldn't be surprised if SSR have dropped her gearing a bit in exchange for the bit of extra tugging power.
@ thanks, my mistake for thinking it was A70, I guess the gearing on a diesel-electric locomotive has a similar effect to the wheel diameter of of steam locomotive; the larger the wheel or gearing range the faster/more efficiently it travels but the less it can pull.
@@Thetiersofmadness yeah pretty much spot on. Larger driving wheel=more speed and smaller driving wheel=more torque.
And when they switched to diesels with electric motors geared to axles, same logic applies. Larger driving gear on smaller driven gear=more speed, smaller driving gear on larger driven gear=more torque.
Its a whole pile of mathematical fuckery that i barely understand, but i have had to learn in the process of becoming a mechanic.
Nice video
is that unstable idle normal?
Have the three 3 locos just been overhauled & repainted?
What year was A70 built? And how much would SSR have paid for her in the condition she was in?
Not sure but when A70 was literally spray painted onto it, can't imagine they paid as much as they would have for a functioning N or P class (not that they have paid for the N's outright yet).
Like A66, it was returned to service (from rebuild) in 1985 I'm pretty sure. Some were 1984, in fact most of the freight ones were done in 84.
@@aidanthomas2510 Frame is from 1951!
Uneven idle but I'm sure that will be sorted.
Yeah I noticed that too at Kangaroo Flat
Brave train controller.
Does anyone know if this loco had standard EMD dash 2 electronics installed sometime in it's life ?
because its an n class in a stylish container its probably got at the least what the n's have and since dash 2 was old when this was turned into an a class its probably got better than dash 2 stuff in it.
Australia….
Smokey old thing.
More A class being saved only A60 A62 A66 and A70 have been saved im pretty sure i am a boy who loves trains
A70 is back after a while. Now in service in SSR Tiger Livery and now their A70. A70 is almost ready for service
COMENG
Good to see that old GM running again I was surprised because a pn driver told me SSR are finished and broke.
@@Robert-qi6mb no surprise PN said that, after all they're the mob who scrapped their locos purely so other operators couldn't get them. They want to be Number 1.
If SSR are broke when they cart a good majority of Victoria's freight and have contracts with Metro then there must be some serious mismanagement.
Can't be that broke or on the verge of going under. They're advertising heavily for train crew atm.
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. PN will be broke before SSR
Sounds a bit ordinary
Still got decent accelaration sounds but the idle is off... i mean it was stored for 10 years and picked for parts for at least 2 locos so it would have been the hardest and probably most costly of all the A's to restore.
