    Shaving and beard oils : Avacodo oil, olive oil, vit E oil, plus one of the following extracts like cinnamon, peppermint, vanilla extract. Basically what we already have in the kitchen cooking cabinet.

    Put the bottles in the water before it reaches boiling point so that the glass heats gradually/slowly to prevent it from breaking. When you turn off the heat, leave the bottles in the water for it to cool down before exposing it to air. Sudden shifts in temperature can cause the glass to break so you have take time.

    You never want to hit the bottles together like that. If you wait for a second the drops come out easily and where you can easily count them. Nice video.

    I've found that there's really not much in it when comparing more expensive beard oils with cheaper beard oils. To a large extent beard oils are beard oils are beard oils. If you get my drift.
    Tip: Avoid the big name manufacturers! and go with 'funky' independent ones who strive to not put crap in and charge you the earth for it. Oh, and avoid any which contain Palm oil.....even if it says 'from sustainable sources' .....at the end of the day it's STILL Palm oil, and therefore should be avoided on principle.
    Try to also avoid ones that contain 'paraffinatum' (paraffin). Why does beard oil need to have paraffin in it??!!? This one is more about putting healthy stuff on your beard, rather than principle.
    Yea, I've started paying much more attention to the 'ingredients' of beard oils, face washes, moisturisers etc. It's something I wouldn't have given a second thought to a few years ago, but now I do. Why? ...because it matters. Well it does to me anyway.

    is beard oil generally different from pre-shave oil? The recipes seem very similar, but is there a difference or ingredient that makes them different?

    • @ToolsofMen
      @ToolsofMen  8 років тому

      They are extremely similar. Usually a pre shave oil will use castor oil as its primary carrier oil. In addition pre shave oils tend to have a slightly lighter scent.

    So if I only want to do one sent like the lavender, what ratio would I use? Should I be filling up the bottle to the brim with the carrier oil, then add the few drops of Lavender after figuring out how potent I want the sent to be?

    • @derekn3336
      @derekn3336 6 років тому

      Essential oils should be around 3%-5% of the total beard oil batch. Example: 18-30 drops of essential oil(s) per 1.0 fl oz of carrier oil(s).

  • @somnorila9913
    @somnorila9913 6 років тому

    What if you use plain cooking oil? Sunflower, olive or grape seed would do the trick if you're not interested in scent but rather in keeping your beard hair healthy?

    • @ToolsofMen

      Typically that hasn't been refined and will leave your beard looking greasy. Never recommend going that route.

    How would i use multiple carrier oils like the big name companies do? Do they do them half and half or thirds when they use 3 or do they mix it in other combinations?

    • @ToolsofMen
      @ToolsofMen  7 років тому

      +dunbar1471 largely comes down to preference and cost - would recommend testing a few small batches until you find one that you like.

    • @dunbar1471
      @dunbar1471 7 років тому

      Tools of Men ok one more question and this may sound like a stupid one. Lets say i start with a half ounce for testing and i like the way it smells. If I used 10 drops of essential oil would i then need to double that to 20 drops when i double the carrier oil to 1oz to have the same smell?

    "Full AND Complete Guide?" Nah, I wouldn't really call it that. I'd say it's more like me listening to a bunch of pricing history, the nuances of "carrier oils" and then me just walking you to the store to watch you shop for the aforementioned carrier oils and other stuff (and some more of you talking)..... Yeah, it's just me listening to a lot of useless information until you get to some actual useful information. Seriously, this video could have been a minute and a half long if you cut out all the stuff that I (and probably most others) really didn't need to see or hear. But hey, if people want to see you go shopping and giving historical lessons on beards, beard oil prices and other stuff, then sure, go ahead, my man. I'm going to go check out a 3 minute video that I am pretty certain will spare me the trip to the supermarket, or co-op, or whatever that store was. Later!

      OK, so me not putting up a video somehow negates all I said? Sweet comeback, dude! Look man, you might want to try and also look at my comment as a kind of positive critique, rather than a slap in teh face. I really wasn't trying to insult you. Seriously, I am sure I am not the only person who felt this went on at least 10 minutes longer than it should have gone. As much as we, yes, even me, appreciate the DIY videos, none of us still want to sit down and watch something longer than necessary. Just saying. Have a nice day, my friend. :)

    • @Squidwardsclarinet69
      @Squidwardsclarinet69 7 років тому +3

      Mondo 357 and you know what? There were people who enjoyed it, you're not special. His comeback was rather sensible, if you find his diy tutorial to be lacking, whelp, make your own. It was informative and helpful for me, length is inconsequential to me if I've obtained the information I desired. Maybe you shouldn't watch videos before having to do something important? Maybe you should watch videos before bed so time isn't relevant? He certainly shouldn't mold his videos to your criteria or standard, because there might be millions who enjoy lengthy videos. You're not the king, you do not pay him, if you click on it and its too long, you could always just leave and watch another video? Why are you so special? This isn't a restaurant or store, you're not the customer, you do not always come first. He takes the time out of his day to film this, buy the products, do research, edit the video, etc. etc. And you have the nerve to crawl inside of his ass because its slightly longer than what you personally find acceptable? A bit of a princess aren't we?

    Hello my Bearded Brother. I heard you say Rosemary Essential Oil. Rosemary can strip the color out of a color treated beard. You have to keep that in mind when using Rosemary. I use Rosemary to lighten the color of my beard if the color I used to dye it turned out a little to dark. I add the Rosemary to my conditioner and let it sit for about 15min. and rinse. I do this every day and with in about 3 days I have lighten my colored beard to the color I originally wanted.

    I know this video is a few years old, but I wanted to point something out I did not see you mention in this video or in your links above. The essential oils you choose to put in the carrier must be SKIN SAFE!!!! There are many other essential oils out there that smell the same, however are used for diffusers and aromatherapy and not designed for contact with human skin. The can be very irrating, can cause rashes and can eve burn upon contact. Some are worse when exposed to sun light. Please ensure that the essential oils you use are skin safe oils.

      +WreckingBall hey there - beard oil won't make a difference regarding growth. The ingredients are conditioning agents like your typical lotion. There are some men that apply minoxidil - but results vary. Hope the info helps!

    You can use little measuring cups / spoons. And they make small funnels too.

    I used to shake my essential oil bottles also. However, If you hold the essential oil bottle with the restricter valve upside down and wait for a bit, individual drops will dispense and you don't absolutely need a pipette. If you need more than x amount of drops--like a tsp--you can pop the restrictor valve off.

    Hooray for beard oil! A great way to keep the hedge soft and manageable.

    Been making my own beard oil for a few months now. My favorite things about is the ability to create my own scent and the money I'm saving. The beard oil recipes have been greatly helpful too!

      Yeah especially when compared to some of the big names out there - you just simply can't beat the value. What's your favorite overall scent profile you like to stick with?

    Great video. Definitely look online at places like Amazon or other discount retailers for essential oils at discounted prices.
    You want to make sure you get one that is pure oil with no fillers. You may have to read the labels because they can look like the real thing when they aren't.
    Places like TJ Maxx (in Columbus Circle, if in NYC) has all kinds of essential oils. Again, make sure to read the ingredients to see that you are getting the real thing.

    Thanks a lot I've been looking for something that's gonna smell nice and some of the brands I looked at were upwards for 45 bucks for an oz. I can't wait to try this out.

    Great information. Suggestion: I give my almost great mixes to my son/son-in-law. And try again. Request: Information for silver beards (I'm 71) that get really wild hairs and hair that breaks easily,

      Hi Bob - I have been meaning to respond to you on the Facebook question as well - greatly apologize on the delay! I have a little bit of grey underneath my jaw on both left and right sides - but haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary when applying beard oil. For wild hairs I would recommend perhaps a balm since it contains a bit of beeswax in the solution. Regarding breaking, I am not 100% sure to recommend - perhaps a solution with Vitamin E may be able to help provide some strengthening to your beard follicles.
