thanks for getting back Graeme. I was thinking of the Airflo 40+ sniper line. Should be a good match I think. I'm wondering how this rod compares to the feel , action and performance of the G loomis short stix

I wish I knew how it compares with the G.Loomis ShortStix. Sadly, they are not available locally. :( I also haven't tried the Airflo Sniper 40+: the head is a bit short for my liking, but I know it'll be pretty good on the MM. (I used to use a Rio OBS regularly on the MM with good effect in close on the yak.)

Great vid. Would the minimag suitable to cast big pike flies?

Absolutely! I took it with me to Michigan a few years ago and used it to cast huge flies at Muskies. (Hooked one and saw a few others follow. None landed though. :( )

Graeme Hird many thanks - would you advise a 9 or 10 floating line for the minimag for pike?

Definitely the 10wt line. Although it's labelled" 8-10", it's a 10wt rod for sure. When you factor in the size of the flies you're going to throw, you wan't lots of line mass available.

Graeme Hird thanks again. Will probably buy the MM - Is 8ft ok To fish from the bank? I plan To mix wadding/belly boat/bank fishing.
Sorry for all this questions - I am a lure fisherman, it will be my first fly rod. Best regards from France.

I use mine everywhere but I'm a good caster. If you're in water above your hips, any single hand rod will be more difficult to cast because hauling gets more difficult. Otherwise, the length of the rod itself is fine. You just aim your false casts higher so they don't tick. (By the way, I STRONGLY advise getting a casting lesson from a certified instructor. Casting big flies is very difficult.)

I'm looking into the mini mag. how you like it? I no its a power stick and can put the wood to big fish. But how is the casting? is it ok for distance with big flys? Thanks for any info you can give.

G'day Brian. I love the MiniMag as a 10wt rod. Distance with big flies is absolutely no problem for me with the MM, but remember the size of fly that can be cast really relies on the line being used rather than the rod. In any case, I've never felt I was missing out on any distance with any line on this rod. The shorter length (8') means it feels lighter to cast than 9' rods with similar line weights, so casting all day with it is no problem.
