My wife and I just finished the series. It was riveting, painful, sad, and yet hopeful, with incredible performances, especially from Mark Ruffalo, who should win next year's Emmy for sure. It's 6 episodes long but well worth the time spent. Don't miss it. Thanks for this session with Mark, Wally, and the director.
30:00 what an awesome interview. Derek talking about how Mark went from being Dominick to becoming Thomas and how it changed Mark as a person for the shooting. So great. Love these guys!
This talk was nothing short of brilliant. True artists across the board. And the show reflected the brilliance, care, humility and craftmanship of these men and the entire cast and crew. Bravo. Thank you for making true art and putting process ahead of performance.
My mom and I stayed up until 5am to binge this whole series, which we never do. The show followed me through my dreams, as well as through my day. We are Italian immigrants, the predecessors of cursed women, and haunted by family trauma, so this hit home. Cianfrance is one of my favorite contemporary directors (The Place Beyond The Pines), and I would put this masterpiece on par with The Deerhunter or One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. I think Wally handled this project with grace (he's very sincere and humble in this interview), and Mark Ruffalo transformed. Not to mention the soundtack (oh!) Harold Budd! This 'film' will stay with me. One of the absolute modern greats!
The series blew me away. My husband said it was too distrubing, but, I found it liberating as there were people even more broken than myself having had a horrific childhood but survived it but forever traumatized by it. This series gives me hope for my future. I can relate on so many levels.
Blue Valentine my favorite movie and everything done by Derek Cianfrance is so real and pure, no insincerity, everything is relatable to the core. First it was Blue Valentine making me reflect on my lovers throughout my life, than Place beyond the Pines about my absent father, then this which reflects my own schizophrenic mother. Ty for it, Idk where else to comment like this lol Derek Cianfrance doesn't have a twitter lol anyways thank you so much
Turning beautifully written books into a limited series is marvelous. Remember Roots and The Thorn Birds? Some book to movie projects are good but there’s no way to turn a novel into an hour and a half movie without omitting details. Thank you for your brilliant work. All the actors did so good in this, this is the best work Rosie O’Donald has ever done. She is superb. Mark playing both twins blew me away! Congratulations really great meaningful work.
I love me some Mark Ruffalo. Dude seems like such a good guy but also in the early 00’s he was kind of relegated to the Romantic Comedy “nice guy” roles. Like “Rumor has it” and “Just life Heaven”...So it’s a relief to see him in shows like this where he can really show his range because he’s a great, completely underrated actor. I’m enjoying the show.
I have to agree. Hands down the best book I have ever read, I have just finished it. Did it in 5 days and stayed up to all hours reading. Outstanding novel and the tv show was amazing. A lot happened in the later bit of the book that was left out so I'm hoping for a 2nd series
Kudos also to the Dir.of Photography's gifted images. We were impressed with so many scenes, including the love scene in Episode Three........such an amazing cast, crew, and especially Wally's amazing work,
1st ... for some unknown reason my audio is not working and so I can't listen to this video right now??? I will return to listen later. For NOW ... I want to say This is one of The Best mini series I've ever watched ... Best written, Thank You Wally Lamb (I can't wait to read the book now). Best Everything else, really, Thank You Derel Cianfrance and all those involved with casting and editing etc ... Nearly every actor in this show deserves some award ... Great acting all around ... Thank You Mark Ruffalo especially for such a perfect performance as each brother ...WOW! And Rosie O'Donnell .... why are you not in more and in bigger roles ...You nailed this role. Again All the acting is exceptional .... To bad there will not be more ... OR is that in the cards down the road maybe??? Love & Peace to All
So many dramatic issues but it doesn't feel like it. It feel like coming home. Like the acknowledgement of our own struggles. Very extreme yes, but it was told an filmed like it's not extreme but common. Thank you so much for the efforts, it's unbelievable how you make every scene a jewel to read and to watch at.🙏❤️💪 Although I réally hated their grandfather, hard to read/watch 😁
Wonderful conversation, wonderful show. Thank you to everyone involved. Mark looked to be getting a little emotional in the middle of the talk, when they were discussing the shooting process. Must've been tough. I hope he realises how tremendous his performances are.
I can`t watch the series, unfortunately, but this beautiful talk is godsend and a syncronicity. I have finally, just recently, come to a point in my life where I am not only proud to have survived, but also no longer have to react to all the trauma that has piled up in my timeline.." it is no longer running me" I am at peace with those who have damaged my life.Thank you guys for sharing this talk..
Coming from a Sicilian American family with a brother like Thomas & grandfather like the grandfather I had to watch this. Read the book many years ago. Interesting Lamb was OK with the many changes. Hope it wins every award & we need more stories like this. Too much action/violence/horror in today's filmmaking. That's easy. This is really hard.
I have watched the series 3 times now. Keep finding new things to it. Mark ruffalo is amazing as both brothers you completely forget its the same actor. This interview was really good and interesting.
Life really really does come full circle as the BOOK incredibly ties everything together into a fluid momentous force of redemption. The show on the other hand drops the ball right at the end (spoiler alert). The show has very little of the book’s ending: Tess and Dominick get back together, raise Dominicks Ex-girlfriend’s baby and they turn Papa’s house into a mental healthcare facility. This is the redemption the world needs right now.
Audio working now! Mr. Cianfrance, Yes ... we need more stories that allow the real humans to prevail ... the real problems of life to be shown in depth ... This is part of why this show is so exceptional ... Thank You All
Very interesting, I did not read the book but I watched the series. I found it hard to watch because it was so intense, emotionally. I am very curious about the research that Wally Lamb did to create the book and show. All of the issues addressed seem to be pervasive with all cultures. I was wondering where he got the information about how psychiatrist patients were and are treated. I thought that this topic was treated brilliantly!
Yup back in 2008. He was a hairdresser. Mark sure had a tough life. Diagnosed with a brain tumour that left his left side paralysed and the hearing loss of his left ear. He also has ADHD and Dyslexia.
Live Wally. Hated the ending of the adaptation. I felt like that was the part that took your breath away and didn’t make you feel like like just a bucket of endless sh!te. Anyway, thanks for giving me that book at 19 and teaching me about forgiveness and compassion, Wally. I’ve given a copy to many people. I watched the adaptation and everything beautifully done and just so, painfully, ALMOST perfect. But its like no director can fvcking resist thinking they know better than the brilliant novelists they try to mimic on screen. Despite decades of fvcking up FANTASTIC LITERARY WORKS OF ART.... they haven’t lost their arrogance to keep right on doing it.
Hello HBO can i suggest you a movie please .... it will be very good and full bravery its based on true life story "Maharaja Ranjit Singh" 🙂🙂 I hope you can do some work on history but i think it will be a great story or movie @HBO please Kindly take a look at this topic ..🙂🙂
I was intrigued about the mini-series because it was filmed where I grew up, Poughkeepsie, NY. I never read the book. Overall, I thought it was well made and well acted, both Ruffalo and O'Donnell gave excellent performance. The story telling was poorly executed, mostly the flashbacks. The opening scene is Thomas in a library wailing about the War in Iraq and then proceeds to cut his hand off as a sacrifice. Total shock value but no set up whatsoever. Later in the first episode, their mother becomes ill and dies. Another poorly developed flashback was when Dominic was married and had a baby, the baby dies in the crib. One critique of the director's filming style was the use of too many closeups. Save the closeups for the emotional impactful moments of the story.
I would argue that the "shock value" of Thomas cutting off his hand, without a setup, was to purposefully get the audience to wonder what lead him to make that decision. He was having a schizophrenic episode, so the lead up was not logical. We soon find out that what lead him to make that decision was not a specific incident, but years of trauma and regression that eventually result in Thomas becoming consumed by his delusions.
The show use a non-linear narrative. So it doesn’t have to have a “set up” before something big happens. It will unfold it self layer by layer as the story goes.
someone give an award to Mark Ruffalo, what an amazing acting, love that show
Best Mini Series by far I have seen lately. A masterpiece.
I agree ... a Masterpiece ...
For sure
Read the book, and others by wally lamb. Mark's a joke.
I hope Wally wins for best screen play and Mark as best actor. They deserve it
every moment of this series is...so alive! I’m obsessed. Amazing work with SUCH heart. I love it.
30:00 what an awesome interview. Derek talking about how Mark went from being Dominick to becoming Thomas and how it changed Mark as a person for the shooting. So great. Love these guys!
one of the best acting performances i have ever watched. truly brilliant.

Was literally just wondering when we’d get an interview. Can’t wait to see more from this series!

Have you read Wally Lamb’s other books? If you haven’t you should. I think you really love all of his work. Thank you for sharing.

John Cassavettes would be proud of Derek.
BV is ok but I like The Place beyond the Pines better. Ben Mendleson is such a great actor and of course Ryan Gosling 😍
This series is so intriguing, can't wait for the next episodes, beautiful camera works...
Such a special show! Truly didn't want it to end ☹️
I've seen the series about five times now. I love all the little things I pick up. Mark is a masterpiece actor. Unreal to play two different roles.

Rain yup that’s exactly what I’m talking about. The movie was cute but Mark once again was the nice guy in that
He was great in Begin Again, The Kids are Alright, Dark Waters, Spotlight. The list goes on
HUGE Derek Cianfrance fan. Also a fan of Mark Ruffalo so together im sure the the show will be a 10/10 I cant wait to watch it
Exactly the interview I was looking for now that I’ve finished the show. Lots of great details! Huge congrats to all of you, such an amazing work.
This is by far the best thing that happened in 2020. I love u Mark!
One of the best books I have read. Always my ‘go to’ book when I can’t decide what else to read.
I have to agree. Hands down the best book I have ever read, I have just finished it. Did it in 5 days and stayed up to all hours reading. Outstanding novel and the tv show was amazing. A lot happened in the later bit of the book that was left out so I'm hoping for a 2nd series

Yes, I know Rosie can be a little controversial but I have always liked her. She is phenomenal in this role. Every person delivered.

I loved the book..I think Mark Ruffalo needs to win an award..only one episode in and find his acting incredible.
Wonderful conversation, wonderful show. Thank you to everyone involved.

I read She's Come Undone literally 12 times between high school graduation and grad school graduation. MAKE THAT MOVIE. Dolores is a friend of mine.
I know Deloris well. Who would you like to see play Deloris?

Cannot get enough of it! Love all the characters. So well done!
Derek Cianfrance is one of the best directors in the world.

Those are tough shoes to fill ! (Mark's-LOL)
Mark is the best actor ever
His very versatile.
Hey Mark, you did a great job ❤️
Watched the last episode this morning ... absolutely brilliant 👏 Paldies 😔🌈🙏
great conversation!
Mark Ruffalo..... O BRASIL te ama..... Todo sucesso!!!!! Que venha o Emmy!!!! Lamb.... Você é um genio!!!!!!! Love vocês!!!!

Reading the book now for the second time, read it 16 years ago
Heavenly.
The director admits something (1:01:00) that bothered me about the series, too many closeups.
Finally someone told me how to pronounce his name!
it's a pity the cut Wally Lamb out of the tv series. Had it been a cameo like Hubert Selby Jr. in Requiem for a dream would've been quite the cameo.
Marvel fans: Hulk
Me: Matt Flamhaff
Others: Who?? Its Mark Ruffalo huh huh ha.
😂
Did you guys know Mark Ruffalo had a brother that died in real life by the way? 😕 he was murdered
Yup back in 2008. He was a hairdresser.
Mark sure had a tough life. Diagnosed with a brain tumour that left his left side paralysed and the hearing loss of his left ear. He also has ADHD and Dyslexia.

with all the hbo channels i get can someone please explain to me why they play so many old terrible movies?
I wonder the same thing ...They have a few GREAT movies and series ... and yet ???
