He seemed kinda unpickable after the innates/facets patch (or somewhere around that time), because he no longer did what he used to (e.g. his sustain in lane got gutted), so his new playstyle received a few buffs since then (stronger spell talents, no mana cost for Q etc.) and eventually people realised that these buffs kinda made him broken, as long as you understand the fundamental differences in how he's played (e.g. being a super strong late game carry instead of an early active one).
