    This is a smaller version of 3D end grain cutting board #1. It possible to use 13" or even 12" planer to make this board. You need light and dark wood to get 3D effect. I used maple and walnut.
    Это - меньшая по размерам версия 3D доски №1. Я разработал ее специально для того, чтобы ее можно было сделать с использованием рейсмуса с шириной 330 и даже 300 мм, которые имеют многие столяры. Нужны две породы древесины - светлая и темная для того, чтобы получить 3D-эффект. Я использовал клен и орех.

    Thank you for making this version with added tips. It almost makes me think I might be able to make one, though I'm generally way too impatient for this type of thing. ('Swhy I'm primarily a woodturner. :) )
    Tip - to prevent the wood from sliding against each other when clamping, drop a few (literally 3-5) grains of salt into the glue joint before joining the wood. The salt crystals don't interfere with the glue joint and are sharp enough to dig into the wood on either side, preventing them from sliding. (Sugar isn't sharp enough.)

    • @mtmwood
      @mtmwood  8 років тому

      +RealRuler2112 Did you ever read about this tip in any serious woodworking textbook? Why not the sand?:)

    • @RealRuler2112
      @RealRuler2112 8 років тому

      +mtmwood I've not read about anything of the sort in any book, but then I don't read many books. (Can't tell you the last time I built something from plans... just design it in my head & revise as I go.) I got the tip from an old guy in my turning club.
      Thinking about it, while either should work to keep the boards from sliding around, I think I'd prefer the salt for two reasons. It would probably dissolve from the moisture in the glue before it sets and wouldn't dull blades as much as bits of sand embedded in the wood should you hit them while cutting.

    Beautiful work. I am thinking of building this cutting board. I am very concerned with the strips shifting when I clamp them. Does the time elapsed while assembling the board give the glue enough grip that if one is careful the pieces don't shift. I think I will just do four or five at a time. Many years ago I built a herringbone tray. The author recommended using dowels between strips to avoid shifting when clamping. Have you done that?

  • @willyzook
    @willyzook 2 роки тому +2

    Quick note to anyone planning to make this: I made this recently, but I increased the measurements so that my board would end up at 18” rather than 12”. I did this by adding 7mm to each measurement listed for each strip in both panels. The finished product was correct in that everything matched up perfectly. However, by increasing the width of each strip, the finished board doesn’t look near as good (it’s the very thin width strips that really make the illusion stand out. I mean you can see the pattern, but the width I added makes the illusion of all the sides caving toward the center harder to notice. Again, it looks decent, and the illusion is there, but next time I will stay with the original measurements. I hope this is helpful to someone.

    I have run the first few strips through the drum sander but the sander takes more material from Peruvian walnut than from eastern maple, leaving scalloped finish. There are slight dips in the walnut. Do you know how to prevent this? I have been putting strips through straight, should they instead go in at an angle? I see you use a slight angle, I will try this.
