Thanks for showing this - If you are getting generic replacement filters like I did, be sure to pre-bend the sides slightly so that you can maneuver the filters in place - the BMW ones are very flexible and the generics were not! Be sure to un clip the little door by pulling up and off to the right when it's fully open. One of the most frustrating things to do (because I don't want to spend $50 on official filters)
I paid my dealership £130 ($185+-) for this, as an extra to my standard service, was mansplained what a difficult and technical procedure it was. was also told that the filters were very very special!!! Well done for getting the camera into the tight spots :)
Well I can see there are some more special antibacterial whatever filters selling for 55 euros or so. Probably a bunch of marketing wank for some chemical layer they add there for a fiver extra cost. I'm pretty sure the 15 euro one will do just as fine for most cases 🙂
They love to do that and that's one of the reasons why I stopped going there a few years ago! They always made it sound like anything on any BMW is super complicated and requires special knowledge and tools, but in reality, most everyone can easily service their own cars for 1/5 the price. Thanks for watching!!
A big thank you for the video, picked up a used 2016 Rex and this was one of the first things I’ve swapped. Greatly appreciate you making the video. Definitely a tight spot to put an air filter but trying paid off and saved me money!
A small but another 'very' necessary improvement/service.... Based on how the vehicle looked on arrival this was a real must... I use a crevice tool on a vacumn cleaner when I change cabin filters... There are so many nasty, ancient pollen spores, industrial fallout in there that it's best to start with a clean filter housing...
I wanted to do this as soon as I started driving it, but the website I ordered from lost my order/package 2 times! Once I finally got it, I can breathe some fresh air again! It's amazing how much crud you find in those filters! Good point on vacuuming out the housing. I will do that next time!
Just did mine this morning. Not too bad but it was much harder than it had to be. The little screw brackets kept slipping out of position making getting the plate back on difficult. It was also a real cow getting the lower filter out of the housing. I suspect mine had never been changed. Is it easier to change when they are less full of dirt?
missed 420 d@ I had the filters sitting on a shelf in my room for a while now, I know what and how to do it but also I think there are a bunch of fuses in there I didn't know about again great info thanks for sharing...
Thanks for the video. This looks like the right hand passenger footwell. Do you know if it's all the other way around for a right hand drive car - so the filters accessed from the left hand passenger footwell?
I love my i3 and I hate the BMW dealership prices on anything. So I would do this ahead of the next inspection. Is this normal in other cars, too, or does it not only look to me unnecessarily overcomplicated like exchanging the i3‘s 12 V battery?
BMW definitely overcomplicated this. I had a Honda CR-Z before I got the i3 and the cabin air filter was accessible inside the glove compartment - no tools needed.
I'm learning that everything on the BMW i3 is somewhat over-engineered and over complicated, but it's not too bad. I've changed filters on all of my cars over the last 15 years and this and my BMW Z4 are the 2 most difficult ones. A lot of other 'common' cars do not require any tools to replace this filter and it can usually be accessed via glovebox.
Jesus, I can't believe it how hard and complicated it is to change this air filter on my i3 compared to my previous car Mazda 6. Why you, BMW, didn't find any other easy place to install this filter 🤔
Weird. My 2016 i3 RHD was is not like this at all. That foam thing is all one piece in the foot well. Also there is no indication there is a filter door behind it. Oh wait. This video is for a LHD car!! Anyone doing this on a RHD car it’s by the foot rest.
This is why you should be careful about content on UA-cam. This job is way easier if the door is removed prior to installing the video, otherwise the filter gets mangled trying to position it into the bay.
BMW i3 Interior Air Filter: amzn.to/3k8Zijm
Torx Socket Set: amzn.to/3Kc9eTM
Appreciate all of these i3 vids lately! Right to the point, no fluff, and great instruction. 👍
I'm try to make video I would want to watch when I'm in a hurry and just need the info quick! Thanks for the feeback!

Great tips, thanks!
My God. The devil himself was in the air filters of my car. Glad to have replaced them with your help!
😂
Awesome video. Took me 15 minutes like you said. Piece of cake and a huge savings over the dealership.

The BMW filters were like $80 on Amazon. I got a cheaper $12 option. They ship on Tuesday. I will let you know how that goes.
Does every interaction need to have a sexual / political component these days? Im pretty sure there are douchebags in every sex 😄
Changig the filters is part of standard service.

Great video! Got the OEM filter and the install was easy enough. Thank you!
omg is this all there is too it? I thought it was supposed to be very difficult. thanks for the vid!
That is difficult compared to other cars, but nothing you can't handle at home in 15 minutes! Thanks for watching.

This helped me change the filters on my wife's i3 😊👍 Thank you!
Cool, I'm just about to change mine for the first time (as soon as the dust settles a bit).
Perfect timing!

Thanks my brother! Shirt and simple.
Thanks for the video.

Can’t wait to see how you will renew the damaged car paint.

can't believe they charge like $180 for this!
Doable but not super easy. It’s not a lot of room in there
RH drive versions much worse!
Worst service design ever
