** Lyrics **
It comes from the depths
of a place unknown to the
keeper of dreams
if it could then it would steal
the sun and the moon from the sky
beware
Human at sight, monster at heart
don't let it inside it could
tear you right apart
No guilt, it feeds in plain sight
Spirit Crusher
Stay strong and hold on tight
Spirit Crusher
Speaking in killing words
The vicious kind that crush and kill
no mercy, its pleasure to taste
The blood that it bled.
[Solo Schuldiner / Hamm]
When it's time to feed to fulfill
the need to consume a breath
some will rise standing tall
breathing out all the breath from
the voice of a soul.

** Song Info **
"Spirit Crusher" is taken from Death's 7th and final studio album "The Sound Of Perseverance" (1998). It is track 03 on the album. The band line-up for "The Sound Of Perseverance" below \/\/\/
Chuck Schuldiner - Vocals/Guitars
Shannon Hamm - Guitars
Richard Christy - Drums
Scott Clendenin - Bass
The drumming is absurdly complex and they played it way faster than the studio version. Holy shit.
Yep! First I thought "no you can't make it in that tempo", well I was wrong :) What a band it was in this line up! Monsters.
If I'm not mistaken, I read in my Vivus! CD booklet that Richard Christy had a bad cold and felt like shit during this show, so he ''rushed'' the songs.
Turns out he just made the tunes even more epic by adding a couple BPMs lol
@@7th-Son-Of-A-7th-Son I actually saw them during the TSOP tour. The show I saw was also played faster than the studio version. Richard had to be an undying cold since he rushed in at least 2 shows.
@@7th-Son-Of-A-7th-Son thats not possible.... no cold or anything can rush the show. Its an urban legend. Chisty was awsomefor sure
@@2000jago And probably making more money doing it too, lol.
The way he screams "crusher" is one of the most evil things i've ever heard.
This isn't evil, it's genius. Pure, unadulterated genius. Evil should be reserved for things that are genuinely abhorrent.
@@matthewgeorgemortimer3050 I got your point but I have to disagree. I don't think about evil as a defect or as something which doesn't allow you to express geniality (Chuck's nickname was, in fact, Evil Chuck). Your answer shows how deeply Christianity has influenced the way of thinking, the moral, the concepts of western civilization. Everyone (including myself) has to carry this weight which is not a metter of belief or faith. It's cultural. You wrote evil should be reserved to things which are abhorrent and this indicates what I'm talking about. Just to be clear, I'm not placing myself in an upper position or something like that, all of us (westerns) have to face this cultural fact.
sepultura influence
@@antoniosabato766 How is it evil when the song is trying to tell you how to spot evil spirit crushers?
@@holyhandgrenades5529 I was talking about the sound of that scream. My comment is all about that. I wrote "the way he screams crusher" is very evil (and badass), not the message within the song.
6:18 Chuck's voice went from the king of death to friendly neighbor LOL
your friendly neighborhood Schuldiner
@@ajgnexus More like Black Metal meets dm
@@ajgnexus or Melodic DM
@@ajgnexus what would you do if you had him as neighbor?.....
@@ELICARLO11 I would ask him to teach me how to play guitar?
3:44 Dave Mustaine laying down to control the crowd? :P
I was thinking exactly the same thing... 😂
My mother: what are you listening to?
Chuck: spirits crushiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhrrrr
This song is so rich and variable any other band would make 10 song out of it.
That's the beauty of this band.
I'm a big metalhead but only discovered Death last week (that might seem like an oxymoron, I know). I've been blown away by the intricacy and depth to their work and Spirit Crusher is just a perfect example. Holds up a big sign saying "fuck you" to the traditional formula.
@@mattmortimer6803 symbolic and deaths last album say “fuck the usual”
No one can deny that Chuck forged his own path with passion and fervor. He was one of the most hard-working, skilled and soulful artists in the history of metal.
5:33 Richard almost ran out of time but it's fantastic how he recovers it by listening to the very precise riff of his companions and waiting for the right moment to come in and resume playing that absurd part with all its fluidity. Superhuman levels of skill!!!
Amazing!!
He dropped one of your sticks.
That is that 👍🤟
I miss him as if he was a family member who parted.
ThrtFkr me too man.
He was cool apparently. He was kind man.
Same
Richard Christy is inhuman on those drums. Probably the best ever, and I am not kidding around when I say that! Inspiring to see a musician with such refined skill 🙏
I went out of my way to find Richard Christy's email and tell him how much I loved his work on this and he actually responded and was really nice about it. Said it was awesome working with Chuck.
I agree...he’s got so much originality and insanity in his drumming. A big inspiration to me as well
Blasphemy. The drums on this beginning to end are the single most well enunciated and meticulously crafted drums I've ever heard and to this day remains my biggest inspiration as a drummer. I have all of their albums and love every one, but the drums here stand alone.
Richard Christy is a god
Hunter Vex Sadly he doesn’t get the respect he deserves because of his insane sense of humor. But he was immensely talented.
Listen to The Art Of Dying. Mario Duplantier is amazing.
Hell yes
I will not focus on 'what might have been', had Chuck survived his battle with cancer. I don't entertain it as a thought. In his 16 years creating music, from the raw intensity of "Reign of Terror" demo, to his final work with Control Denied, Chuck created timeless metal records that appeal to the widest possible swath of the metal underground.
The riff at 2:17 brings tears to my eyes. RIP Chuck. Amazing musician. Amazing Person. I think it's the most beautiful riff he ever wrote.
I love that riff so much!
Death riffs in general, they have bunch of these progressive pedal tonic riffs and hands down they're the most beautiful kind of riffs.
My fave is 4:48, such an incredible riff!
@@consonaadversapars Yes, eargasm in the purest state
I feel the same about this riff, by the way fav from Death, and one of my fav of all time. Chuck is a genious.
Also one of my favorite riffs ever. Chuck was so ahead of his time, this particular riff reminds me of metalcore.
This song is one of the most brilliant metalsongs i have ever heard. What structure, surprise, buildup and power.
this is "DEATH"
One of the most complex and beautiful things I have heard in my entire life.
R.I.P. Chuck....such a great musician.
This one and "Scavenger of Human Sorrow" for me)
I just discovered Death and I’m so amazed by among things the Singer’s voice. His screaming is so powerful
A morte de Chuck foi uma perda irreparável para o cenário metal... a voz dele é incomparável...
Excelente música, uma de minhas favoritas...
Chuck you had so much to give in this music!! RIP
2020...yup, this is still beyond badass.
Most! Amazing!
Miss you Chuck, your music continues to inspire me daily. May your memory live on forever!
The drums here are simply divine, this performance is better than the studio recording. Just awesome stuff.
RIP Chuck and Scott!
richard christy was my faaaaaavorite druuuuuummer in deeeaaaath
Don't forget Gene Hoglan brother
Sean.
That ride cymbal is so F HAUNTING! What a performance, I'm in awe and shock!
Holy shit!! That scream!!!!
I challenge anyone to find me a bad Death song. It's a shame that some of their material gets forgotten, but that's only because with Death it's either "amazing" or "messianic".
their only less-than-stellar song was "Painkiller" on the same album as this. And it wasn't even their song! it was a cover of a Judas Priest song and to be honest it wasn't even that bad.
@@nicholasgrijalva5842 what?? That painkiller cover was fucking awesome
Each riff in this song would be the best riff on any other band's entire album. Every song on TSOP is like that... RIP Chuck.
4:13 Awesome shot of angry Chuck right there!!
Most Amazing!!
Absolutely incredible performance of this song. Drums are alien Richard Christy
GOD of metal, proudly did shake hands with Chuck once back in 1988
there are no "metal gods", metal isnt a polytheism. there is only one metal god. Chuck.
what about Lemmy?
@@laguna2869 No doubt chuck is god but Lemmy is all father !!
Metal is polytheism now, fight me
Judas Priest would like to have a word with you
@@Andre232323232332323 shit 😂😂
Thanks fot your Music Chuck , The Desth Metal' Father
Never realized they were playing this so fast, absolute beasts!
I came here to see how Chuck using his diaphragm so well, and his vocal really inspired me. I wish i can, but I'll try.
Always getting goosebumps when he screams crusher. R.I.P Chuck
Wonderful to see this in a glorious 60fps.
Perfeição ❤
0:49 RIP little dude
Everybody talks about what a great guitarist chuck is... but nobody talks about how fucking badass are his vocals!🤘🏻
Thank you so much for upload!
spirit crusherrrr que cancion! pura crema. Hace 20 años cuando era estudiante de la preparatoria me gustaron los riffs de guitarra y la aprendi XD
Thank you for posting
Love you Chuck!!! You are a huge inspiration to my guitar style.
New into the band Death and I already love their style! RIP Chulk!
This is just another example of just how awesome this band was. Beyond insane.
hard to believe how well these guys performed those songs live. i am amazed and listening all the freakin time.
that bass in the beginning is amazing
Absolute Masterpiece.
Thanks for this Pro shot,!.
Amazing composition
Pause at 1:25, THAT is a great scary shot of Chuck!
Darkened eyes, flesh of the pale plague, feast upon our souls.
That’s the true “evil Chuck”
During the first CRUSHAAAAAAAAR! Is the true form. Veins in the head like budding demon horns. That is the face of death
Beautiful!
gorgeous machiiiines!
He was fkn waaaaaaaay ahead of other bands... young as f and the music and riffs just awsome!!!
The music!!!
My brain can't comprehend doing these types of complex rhythm parts and then doing syncopated vocals.
My spirit is crushed, what a band
till this day those melodic dm riffs eith proggy and black metal vocals still make this song brytal as hell
One of my favourites \m/
Wow!
My inspiration, I want to be like chuck even though there only will ever be one chuck nobody can beat him
exelenteeeeeeee.........
HEAR THAT FUCKING BASS
Magnificent
Spirit Crusher is the Greatest Song Chuck ever wrote. This song is pure genius. I can't help but to marvel at its Brilliance every time I listen to it. If you listen to the Control Denied song (Breaking the Broken) it has the same words in Spirit Crusher. "The Blood that you Bled" and "Speak in Killing words the kind that crush and kill"
This is metal
Buena música...!!!
I've only just noticed the crew who get on stage and get in the way of the performance - funny!
нет слов.. огонь..
I forget where I heard this, but I seem to remember that Richard was sick with the flu (or maybe a hangover) when they did this show, so he was trying to get through it as fast as possible.
Hey, I love Death, Hoglan, Christy, and especially Chuck's programming. But I wish they didn't have to rush the songs. They get a lot on the set list, but the mood suffers a bit. In my personal opinion.
Özledik seni be ; hem de çok. Allah rahmet eylesin !!!
RIP...
death metal bu allahı karıştırma
Amin
...
**TO this music!!
True Legends Live Forever
We Fukn love you Chuck !!!
Legendary performance
One of my favorite Death songs, (Symbolic has more favorites of mine in numbers, but) The Sound had some of the highest peaking moments, although fewer of them for me. Those which did peak, damn soared at times higher than any other instances.
Good god !!!! - the best band ever
Nice and fast ...
I love 💕 death and chuck I always will me and my bros always used to listen to them in the car whilst smoke in ganja and drinking on the way to the pub you Will never die 🤘👿👹🎃🔥 you are a true brother of metal 👿👿👿👿👿🤘🤘🤘🤘👹👹👹👹🎃🎃🔥🔥
Really special moments...
Still hard to believe we lost Chuck so young. By all accounts he was as kind as he was brilliant. Now we've lost Christy and Chuck's long time manager. Just thankful for all the good music.
Richard Christy is still alive
chusk is just the best, period
It's a "crushin' " song!!!
Uma pena nao ter-los juntos hoje, garanto que seria cada show mais lotado.. \m/
Its sad that what killed him ultimately was being an american citizen
Magistral, magistral
A drummer who makes good use of cymbals on this type of drum will probably not be in the metal world. Also known as Richard Christy, the technique is a drum technique that is groundbreaking in the metal world. Best drummer RICHARD CHRISTY 🤘
Shit that bass sounds crisp as fuck
I love how his hair gives him horns! Righteous dude
Hahahha
❤
Alejandro Silva on bass
So goddamn tight !
R.I.P Chuck
FUCKING AMAZING
amazing song, amazing chuck, amazing richard christy, but am I the only one that has trouble finding a live version where the second guitar solo doesn't sound as it is in the wrong key or something?
Happy birthday shurk
I didnt know Dave Mustaine was a security guard
Fajnie się przy tym obiad miesza
SPIRIT CRUSHEEEEEEEEER📣
🤘🏻🤘🏻
Given how much this song is complex in the original tempo, seeing it played WAY faster than the original one is asthonishing.
His death is a major loss for the whole music history.
