If I'm not mistaken, I read in my Vivus! CD booklet that Richard Christy had a bad cold and felt like shit during this show, so he ''rushed'' the songs. Turns out he just made the tunes even more epic by adding a couple BPMs lol

@@matthewgeorgemortimer3050 I got your point but I have to disagree. Your answer shows how deeply Christianity has influenced the way of thinking, the moral, the concepts of western civilization. Everyone (including myself) has to carry this weight which is not a metter of belief or faith. It's cultural. You wrote evil should be reserved to things which are abhorrent and this indicates what I'm talking about. @@holyhandgrenades5529 I was talking about the sound of that scream. My comment is all about that. I wrote "the way he screams crusher" is very evil (and badass), not the message within the song.
I'm a big metalhead but only discovered Death last week (that might seem like an oxymoron, I know). I've been blown away by the intricacy and depth to their work and Spirit Crusher is just a perfect example. Holds up a big sign saying "fuck you" to the traditional formula.
No one can deny that Chuck forged his own path with passion and fervor. He was one of the most hard-working, skilled and soulful artists in the history of metal.
Richard Christy is inhuman on those drums. Probably the best ever, and I am not kidding around when I say that! Inspiring to see a musician with such refined skill 🙏
I went out of my way to find Richard Christy's email and tell him how much I loved his work on this and he actually responded and was really nice about it. Said it was awesome working with Chuck.
5:33 Richard almost ran out of time but it's fantastic how he recovers it by listening to the very precise riff of his companions and waiting for the right moment to come in and resume playing that absurd part with all its fluidity. Superhuman levels of skill!!!
Blasphemy. The drums on this beginning to end are the single most well enunciated and meticulously crafted drums I've ever heard and to this day remains my biggest inspiration as a drummer. I have all of their albums and love every one, but the drums here stand alone.
I love that riff so much! Death riffs in general, they have bunch of these progressive pedal tonic riffs and hands down they're the most beautiful kind of riffs.
I will not focus on 'what might have been', had Chuck survived his battle with cancer. I don't entertain it as a thought. In his 16 years creating music, from the raw intensity of "Reign of Terror" demo, to his final work with Control Denied, Chuck created timeless metal records that appeal to the widest possible swath of the metal underground.
I challenge anyone to find me a bad Death song. It's a shame that some of their material gets forgotten, but that's only because with Death it's either "amazing" or "messianic".
their only less-than-stellar song was "Painkiller" on the same album as this. And it wasn't even their song! it was a cover of a Judas Priest song and to be honest it wasn't even that bad.
Spirit Crusher is the Greatest Song Chuck ever wrote. This song is pure genius. I can't help but to marvel at its Brilliance every time I listen to it. If you listen to the Control Denied song (Breaking the Broken) it has the same words in Spirit Crusher. "The Blood that you Bled" and "Speak in Killing words the kind that crush and kill"
Still hard to believe we lost Chuck so young. By all accounts he was as kind as he was brilliant. Now we've lost Christy and Chuck's long time manager. Just thankful for all the good music.

Hey, I love Death, Hoglan, Christy, and especially Chuck's programming. But I wish they didn't have to rush the songs. They get a lot on the set list, but the mood suffers a bit. In my personal opinion.
Given how much this song is complex in the original tempo, seeing it played WAY faster than the original one is asthonishing. His death is a major loss for the whole music history.
amazing song, amazing chuck, amazing richard christy, but am I the only one that has trouble finding a live version where the second guitar solo doesn't sound as it is in the wrong key or something?
The drumming is absurdly complex and they played it way faster than the studio version. Holy shit.
