I had always wondered what happened to them after they almost broke into the mainstream. And I just I love that dude from Metal Blade totally skips telling what really happened so that Warner Bros just dropped Fates like a hot potato. Watch his eyes get all shifty... And yes, all prog bands - especially Dream Theater - owe Fates big time... At the end of the day, if the last thing FW ever did were Disconnected (2000) and FWX (2004) that would have been a shame IMO but with Darkness in a Different Light (and its 'sister' release Sympathetic Resonance) it just goes to show you never know when your favorite band will come back to blow you away twice over.
I'm not sure if Teen Spirit had come out right around there or not. I thought that Fates just didn't survive the purge that came along with grunge. Since then, I've heard and read different things about Slagel and Metal Blade. I can easily see him asking for $X and, when not getting it, refusing to let them go. Any delay at that time would've been fatal.

FWX and Disconnected (especially) were stunning records in their own rights, tho.
Greatest Band In this Galaxy !
Grunge came and wiped out some of my favorite bands. But I still listen to the same bands. So happy I kept all my vinyl records!
The labels were idiots... basically
Nirvana killed so many incredible bands when they broke out.
Check out Alder Zonder..... excellent!!!
Turn the damn music off so we can hear what they are saying
