  • In this kids learning documentary, I’m going to teach you 12 really cool facts today, some that may be very different than what you’ve heard. Some of these facts are going to really surprise you…some of them are really neat and you’re going to find it really interesting.
    1. The Stegosaurus was a dinosaur that lived about 150 million years ago during the Late Jurassic Period.
    2. The word “stegosaurus” comes from Greek words which means “roof lizard” Although it was first found in the U.S, fragmentary remains unearthed across the pond strongly imply that Stegosaurus also roamed Portuguese terrain 150 million years ago.
    3. The Stegosaurus was about the size of a bus, 30 feet long and 14 feet high. It probably weighed around 10,000 pounds.
    4. It is most famous for the diamond shaped plates that are lined up and down its back. These plates could be as big as 2 feet by 2 feet. It also had 4 sharp spikes on its tail that were 2 to 3 feet long which it likely used for defense. This fact is based on the poor condition (damaged tips) of the spikes in nearly all found fossils.
    5. Stegosaurus had a small, flat head and a turtle-like beak. Despite its huge size, Stegosaurus had very small brain, roughly the size of dog's brain
    6. Stegosaurus walked on four legs. Its hind legs were much longer than its front legs, giving it a rather odd, ‘head down’ appearance. This would also have meant that it wasn’t very fast-moving. Scientists think that its top speed may have been around 3.5 or 4.5 mph).
    7. The purpose of the stegosaurus' plates is much debated by scientists. Some think that they were primarily for defense against larger predator dinosaurs. Others think that they were for display to intimidate enemies and to attract other dinosaurs. Still another theory is that they were used to cool off the dinosaur.
    8. Stegosaurus had cheeks which were used for chewing and storing of food.
    9. The Stegosaurus was an herbivore meaning that it ate plants. It likely ate plants like mosses, ferns, and fruits. But Here is something funny that has baffled some scientists. The Stegosaurus swallowed rocks intentionally as a part of his diet. The rocks helped it to churn the huge amount of food in the stomach.
    10. Tyrannosaurus Rex, Iguanodon and Stegosaurus inspired the look for Godzilla.
    11. The state of Colorado in the United States has named Stegosaurus as its State Dinosaur.
    12. Some paleontologists believed that Stegosaurus has its brain in its butt. This is because they found some grey matter in its hip region but of course, this theory was proved wrong later on.
