On October this year I am visiting Japan , and Hiroshima , so I will visit Kure for the Yamato museum, it’s a dream for me since I heard about Yamato and am so excited about it 🤩
It was a dream for me, and i'd say my dream wa fulfilled, it was very impressive just make sure to bring a smartphone so you can listen to the audio guides if you don't know japanese
UPDATE: Sadly, due to logistical reasons, I won't be able to go to the museum or Hiroshima for that matter. Being it will be my first time in Japan, I've tried to cram too many things into my travel schedule so it won't work out. There's always next time. It least I'll still be able to see the Mikasa.
Thankfully these useless ships were built. Imagine if all the skill and resources spent on those three ships were used for correctly built aircraft carriers??? Not a pleasant thought at all.
Recently went to the Yamato Museum and JMSDF museum in Kure, Japan, both very good, but not much of the signs are in english so be weary of this, although as an alternative they both offer audio guides for each part of the museum (its alot bigger than it looks). Overall, very good do recommend.
The battleship Yamato... was a ship of the samurai of the sea... knew it would be sunk while upholding Bushido... and headed to the battlefield to defend Japan…
Its kind of sad that the largest battleship came at a time that they were becoming increasingly useless. The aircraft carriers ability to fight from well outside of their range just made them a big target. Even the German pocket battleship which was an improvement would suffer vs an aircraft carrier. Planes even played a big part in hunting down those too.
Tbh, I love the impressive of Yamato. But I wish IJN did give more love on Shinano making her as Full Fledged Carrier than just half baked Carrier. I bet Shinano become full fledged she is going to be literally a moving airbase.
I am not sure why they even bothered converting Shinano at all. They barely had enough planes let alone pilots and resources for an ambitious carrier of that scale. Then of course the decision to send the incomplete carrier with practically 0 flood protection to sea which only ended with the complete loss of the ship and valuable manpower
@ Tbh, it isn’t a bad Idea. Shinano is large enough for allowing some Land Based Aircrafts. They can just mod the Land Based slightly and you can just fit on Shinano.
Ship was engineered way before ww2... By the time WW2 broke out, battleships were already obsolete as plane carriers were implemented. Look at Bismarck. That ship took a beating from battleships but was crippled by one plane with just one torpedo. (I know there was many planes and many torpedos i just wanted to put that into perspective of how expensive battleships were compared to planes and torpedos). Same yamato. It was destined for one way trip as it was ordered to beach itself and to server as metal fortress with gigantic firepower... But it didn't arrive. Same Can be said about pearl harbour. Same for Japanese loss of carriers... Dismantled by divé bombers and torpedo planes... The whole concepts of these big drednoughts was outdated.
@@Vehehehe Last mission of Yamato was suicide mission during battle of Okinawa. By this point, Japanes navy was on its last breath as most of the carriers were sunk (21) only 2 were remaining thus their air superiority was no more. Further more battle of Okinawa was raging only few moths prior Japanese surrender. Knowing Japanese code of war, surrender was shameful and you should die anyway, either by enemy hand or your own. So it kinda made sense to sent everything you had left to try shift power dynamics but yeah, same as germans in late stage of war there was very little chance of changing course of it. Further more same as germans, Japanese were out of production materials, somewhere i have read that in the end soldiers were getting rifles without sights. So even if you scrap such a 38 000 ton behemoth, It would take at least 6 months to 2 years. And it was the pride of imperial navy same as bismarck was for germans. So there was no time for scrapping and also i am convinced that only handful generals knew that battleships are thing of the past and majority were still living in old glory days trying to relive it.
the two largest battleships ever built were horded instead of used when they might have made a difference. Imagine if it had been Yamato and Musashi at Guardalcanal instead of Hiei and Kirishima? Imagine if they had used those ships to support the New Georgia Campaign to take Port Moresby and isolate Australia? Now nothing would have in the end changed the outcome of the war but at least those ships could accomplished something to justify their huge cost in resources to build
