    As amazing as his Belmont was, to me the move he made at the first turn in the Preakness is the most amazing thing I have seen in fifty years of following sports. He passed those horses like they were standing still. Unbelievable.

      That move was a duplicate of his move in the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga in his juvenile year. He went 5 wide around the turn doing a 22-1/5 seconds going from the back to the front and kept going. Phenomenal

      And those weren't $3,200 claimers he was passing in the Preakness, either. They were Grade I stakes-winners, and he just sailed right on by them and still had enough in the tank to win.

    So glad for the internet. I get to re live watching this Beautiful Horse . I was 6. I remember every race. We were all around the TV. Cheering. He truly was a celebrity. Well deserved. Still holds th wss records, I believe. It's been so long. Surely there would have been another Big red. NOPE NOT YET. 2019. They said his Heart was 5 times the size of other Horses. Explains why he could run so fast for so long. ONE OF A KIND

      @gorgeous6737 4 роки тому +3

      Twice the size

    • @justiceprevail1552
      @justiceprevail1552 3 роки тому +2

      Actually, his heart was 2 times the size of other horses. A necropsy report after his death in 1989 stated his heart weighed between 21 and 22 pounds. The average thoroughbred horse's heart weighs between 8 and 9 pounds.
      Also, Secretariat's hindquarters were the main source of his power, with a sloped croup that extended the length of his femur. When in full stride, his hind legs were able to reach far under himself, increasing his drive. His ample girth, long back and well-made neck all contributed to his heart-lung efficiency.

    I'm in my 70's now, and I've seen 3 of the most incredible sporting accomplishments ever; Secretariat at the Belmont was the first. The Miracle on Ice in the 1980 Winter Olympics was second. And Jack Nicklaus winning the Masters at age 46 with a 30 on the back nine was the third. Secretariat's was the most incredible of all; it's been nearly 50 years and he still holds the record time for all 3 races. I don't think anyone's come within 2 seconds of his Belmont time. And 2 seconds is 10 lengths.

  • @julieenslow5915
    @julieenslow5915 5 років тому +9

    First, just to keep us all on the same page, the announcer at the end misspoke when he said Secretariat would retire to Claiborne (which was true) where he was born (definitely NOT true - he was born at the Meadows).
    Secondly, I think he had another gear most horses lack. Listening to those that rode him, they talk all about how while running in a race, he would suddenly just stretch out more, seeming to drop the jockey down about 6", and then he took off. You can see it dramatically in the Preakness when he made the run from last to the front while on the turns.
    Thirdly, has anyone ever figured out (if it is even possible) what his time might have been in any race if he not had to go to the outside on the turns so often? I mean, really? That adds a lot of distance!

    • @Psyfi85
      @Psyfi85 Рік тому +2

      Correct, surprised they got his birthplace wrong. Sham was foaled at Claiborne, maybe they mixed up the two. And yes, he seemingly had another gear whenever Ronnie, Eddie needed it, like to think he knew how much power and stamina he had but held back partially due to rider error/instruction. As far as his constantly going outside there’s no telling what would’ve happened in Preakness for example had he switched post position with Sham, would’ve been interesting to say the least.

    Meadow Stables didn't win the coin toss. They got Secretariat because of it, since the other party thought the other foal in question had better breeding

    • @sohillsvettech1624
      @sohillsvettech1624 8 років тому +7

      But in fairness if penny had won the toss she was going to pick secretariat

    • @salicemccool9268
      @salicemccool9268 7 років тому +2

      The winner of the toss got the first pick of foals born in '69, the loser the first pick of the '70 foals. But there was no choice to be made re the '70 foals, as one of the mares involved didn't conceive in '69. Ms. Chenery, as the "loser," automatically got the only foal produced, Secretariat. If she'd have won, she would only have gotten one '69 foal, and Ogden Phipps would have gotten the one '70 foal, Secretariat, by default. The coin toss took place in the fall of '69; it was known at that time that one of the mares hadn't conceived that year, so both parties wanted to lose, as it meant getting two foals vs one.

    Please not, Secretariat was NOT born at Claiborne Stud. He was born in the foaling shed on the grounds of The Meadow. That shed is now a Virginia historic site. Ronnie Turcote did use the whip a couple of times in the Derby. Seattle Slew raced against horses of less calibre than Secretariat did. Sham was an excellent horse and was Anglelite. Secretariat was just better. His progeny who have come to the track have been the same. Lady's Secret won the Derby and the Belmont. Terlingua had an excellent racing career.

    I just recently learned that Secretariat and Sham were related to one another on the dam side, and he dam side is where the "big heart" came from. Both of their dams were daughters of Princequillo. Sham's heart weight 18lbs and Secretariat's heart was estimated to weigh 22lbs.

      You just have to give it up to Secretariat and Ronnie Tourcotte! He knew his horse. At the Belmont, they were cropping the hell out of Sham, but Ronnie just let him run! I truly believe that Secretariat was a thinking horse. He won his way. I get chills and cry when I watch him run the Belmont. He was just exquisite! I believe that Penney Tweedy really opened the door for woman in racing. She was smart, collected and gracious. Lucian Lauren knew his stuff. As humans, there were foibles, but the end result speaks for itself! RIP Secretariat, you will never be forgotten! I don't think that I will see another horse like him in my lifetime, but genetics do make their rounds. It may be in 100 years, it could be tomorrow. I have to believe that he will come back even stronger!

      Mike Rodriguez Well, if your goal was to get a rise out of somebody with that comment, you got it. That's the most ridiculous thing ever. Barring injury or illness, he would have cleaned house. The only times he ever lost, he was sick and was run anyway.

      Mike Rodriguez Your 'honesty' is an arrogantl pursuit to display your 'perfect' knowledge in public. In the case of Secretariat, his 'perfection' as seen by admirers is relative to what is seen and/or expected of racehorses in general. It's not just his races. It's also his conformation, constitution, attitude, and desire to run.

    • @kwgrid

    He was NOT BORN in KENTUCKY!!! Secretariat was born to a modest horse farm in VIRGINIA. He was “syndicated” and MOVED to stand at stud at Claiborne in Kentucky.

    Been watching horse racing since 1970 an out of his 16 wins i would say about 6 times he raced no horse on there best day could have beaten him . The great horses have one maybe two days were they look incredible but this horse had too many days were he ran insane. The greatess horses usally burn out after a mile an a half this horse ran faster in the last quarter mile in his 2 mile an a half races, the belmont n the man of war stakes thats not suppose too happens ,he would beat theses horses today in a mile n half race by 30 yards.

    Small query...The commentator said that "SECRETARIAT" retired to stud at his birthplace "Claiborn Farms", but I have always understood that "Big Red" was born at the Chenery stud, "Meadow Farms"...? Which is correct , please....? Either way he is Legendary....Immortal...He was and always will be "SECRETARIAT" That is simply enough...!!

    whats a shame is sham wouldve been a triple crown winner any other year. He also broke the derby record and was 2/5 a second from the preakness record. Secreteriat broke his heart he didnt race again. Lost the will to run. Sham also had 3 teeth knocked out coming out of statrting gate in derby, who knows id he didnt

    • @elainemarsden8488

      Secretariat did not lose his will to race. He raced again and won. Being a lover of his you mentioned sham knocked out 3 teeth and all my investigations no one other than you has said that. Sham lost you must have lost yourself still got the tote?
