This is gonna be a little big longer comment with tons of nostalgia in it.
I still vividly remember when I was a kid and all I was listening was Nu-metal and slowly exploring the corners of Deathcore and Metalcore... I still couldn't find a music that would suit my taste at the time because I wanted something new, something I've not heard before and as most of my early bands I've grown to love were introduced to me via. Runescape videos on youtube... the same way it was with early Hardstyle/Jumpstyle.
As a kid when I was really young, the only way I could get my hands on any kinds of songs was via radio or TV. There were plenty of choices but my older brother was really into Rammstein and Slipknot and System of a Down so huge portion of my childhood was mainly nu-metal and anything related to metal music, but when I had a not so joyful mood I always wanted to have something else to listen to and I shit you not my playlist of favourite songs (I'll just showcase the names of the artists/bands) was something like
Rammstein
Shakira
Basshunter
Slipknot
Gigi d'agostino
Madonna
System of a Down
and many others...
So even as a kid I could always listen to anything and find something I like about it, be it a voice of the singer, their live performance, the sound of the bass guitar or even something stupid like "HAHA THEY HAVE MASKS AND LOOK SCARY, EKSDEE I LOVE THEM" (yes I'm refering to Slipknot)
But back to hardstyle, I was watching this youtube channel called "LuckyBucket" with some numbers which I don't remember and he was doing videos called "RSMV" being a shortcut for
"Runescape Music Videos" which as they hint, were just a song playing over a overly edited Runescape footage fitting the song by the effects or cuts etc...
He was doing mostly Rock and Metal songs (most of them were just pure Emo bands back in the day like "30 Seconds to Mars, Bullet for my Valentine, Skillet, Evanesence, etc.) which I loved understandably, but one comment said
"Could you do one video on some jumpstyle song?"
To this day I would gladly invite this dude to a beer or a lunch because holy shit once I searched Jumpstyle on youtube I fell in love with the first song I've ever heard.
"The Highstreet Allstars - Rock that Beat" was that song and shit did I love it.
Played it over and over and over again and then I was searching for more...
All those remixes of songs I knew into Jumpstyle, DJ COONE and his old-ass tracks and tons of others... but then as I was listening to Jumpstyle more and more
people were always comparing it to Hardstyle which I thought is a something related to a genre in my country called "Tekkno" which is literally just a mix of Frenchcore, Speedcore and gabber usually played on unaprooved "tekkno parties" which were and are illegal, one time even it was all over the TV police stormed one of those parties and tons of people got hurt ... just bunch of junkies not having a single penny to rent a warehouse for one night and this is how it ended up.
But anyway as I searched Hardstyle
"Francesco Zeta - Fairyland"
"Noisecontrollers - Yellow Minute"
"Tatanka - Arabika"
"Showtek - The F Track"
"Headhunterz - Psychedelic"
and literally any old Headhunterz or Showtek songs you can think of...
As I was searching more and more, not many people knew about this genre so I had no one to enjoy it with... fast forward few years and some of my friends were introduced to the genre by me or they found it somehow on their own, but still it was something of like a "underground" music not having the mainstream appeal.
And look at it now.
Fucking tons of people enjoying themselfs no matter their nationality, believes and when I had the pleasure of visiting one Hardstyle festival abroad (because in my country there is not a single festival that plays Hardstyle to this day)
I went into a talk with some group of friends that visits the festival each year.
They never heard of Hardstyle before, because they were heading to a different one and mistook it when one of them was searching for the diretions ... so when they arrived they were tired and just bought the tickets to this festival and went there every year since.
Let anyone reading this be happy, be kind to each other and help others.
Sadly this year I was planning to attend to one festival in Netherlands, but my friend I was planned on going with suddenly passed away so I really couldn't go alone.
