It makes the same sound as those cars in the 70s scifi films
In Germany this will actually be even more so, because it makes a very nice spaceship like sound when driving slow to warn pedestrians. In the us that sound is not allowed and you have special laws which force car makers to use a certain sound which doesn‘t sound nice, it‘s more of a beep. Here is an example for that sound the car is making at slow speed in Germany: ua-cam.com/video/aw_YPNnuN2o/v-deo.html (it´s pretty quiet, so turn up the volume or use headphones)
It's been rumored that ever so often, the Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 will let out the suitable sound of a unicorn fart.
I think the Mercedes rep did pretty good trying to keep up with the language and syntax. I applaud him for that
Lol 32:54, hearing a German say "we want to electrify the people..."
Gasified people takes too long. Electricity is much faster and more eco friendly. Hahahha
But what is the Doug score?
Jay could change the oil and rotate the tires on a car before doug could open the trunk to show the quirks
Leno is genuinely talented and knowledgeable about cars....DeMuro...not so much.
I think of Jay Leno as a polite and less sarcastic version of Jeremy Clarkson
I love the clip of Jay Leno on Top Gear. JC looks infatuated with Jay. And Jay tells a great story.
Jay how a vast knowledge of cars, Clarkson has the help fired when his steak isnt perfectly prepared...
As I was watching this I realised that I really enjoy these episodes so much more when the spokesperson for the brand just speaks like a normal person. No silly marketing talk, hype and excessive self promotion, just informative and straight forward conversation. So refreshing for a change.
Jay lowkey trolling this guy with his old Mercedes memories. I love it.
18:34 his face when jay leno smack the bonnet. LMAO
@@Varsityathelete61 nope, I'm just an asian with a messed up British and American English. Sorry for your concern.
I'm glad there is more competition in this market.
@Retro Collected Ipace? Jaguar barely even sold any of those. Jaguar sales have been declining for a while, they aren't much competition for anyone. Tesla needs some real competition. That means more electric cars German, Japanese, and other American car companies.
@Retro Collected Tesla already has a little competition though, but its definitely not the Ipace. The Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt, and the Toyota Prius Prime all sold over 10000 cars in the US alone. Their sales are really close/above the sales of the Model X and the Model S. Not that many people are in the market for electric cars yet, so of course there is not enough competition for Tesla yet. But if the market continues to grow and the big companies start really start trying, Tesla will feel a lot more pressure.
Just love when you watch a review and the person that does the review actually knows cars and does not just talk about what you can read on the manufacturers webb site, thumbs up to you Jay and also to MB for this beautiful electric SUV
I like this engineer..
With no engine bay geometry requirements your limitation on design is pretty limitless.
So Mercedes makes a late-model MDX clone...
What the hell?
Could make a trunk with that aera like the Rivian pick-up or simply a more aerodynamic shape , but people like big front end instead of efficiency
@Phil McCracken THAT is what is revolutionary and will cut costs down eventually
Actually, us crash test requirements will always limit what you can do to the front design of a car. It has to pass multiple tests. 🚗🚗🚗🚗✅✅✅✅🚙🚙🚙🚙👍👍👍👍
@@MichaelLesesne
Correct, but you aren't limited by building around a giant engine and all it's bits there, you can put in a lot more structural reinforcement in a smaller area so you get more protection for less material, so you don't NEED to make the front AS dumb looking. Pedestrian crash regs are mostly what cause your front end to look like melting soap but other manufactures make interesting styles even with that limit.
Mercedes makes.....an Acura mdx
Nope. The limitations are safely laws. Thats why all cars are more and more starting to look alike. You aren't just allowed to make crazy designs anymore. And they should have brought the AMG Line version...
Looks like an Acura in front, and completely like a new Porsche SUV in the rear.
Mercedes did a great job! Waiting to see more in the future!
That is the best looking electric car that I have seen yet, especially the interior. Congratulation Mercedes-Benz.
"It's from our core compotences, like intelligence and emotion" 🙄 Never try to make a German engineer into a salesman. 😂
It's coming from our core competences erhm core values like intelligence and emotion. lool
You can that about an American engineer as well, or just about any other country's engineers!
My dear Mr. Jones, try to say this in german. You probably never ever become a salesman in Germany.
If you ever need a dead pan guy in an act with a comedian, get a German engineer.
I am German and I can confirm half of your statement. All it takes is a German, but doesn‘t matter if it‘s an engineer or anything else... No matter which job a German has you have a 90% chance that a German person does not have any humor.
The engineering thing is just a good image we have lmao
@@timonxDlol i beg to differ... Germans have humour and a lot of times a much deeper sense of humour... just as Germans we are not usually a "LOL" type of ppl... we will find stuff amusing but barely break a smirk... so I do get where he is coming from with that "dead pan" statement
"Jay, my fuel light is on, will you fill me up?" hilarious!
That was about as much fun as watching a demonstration on a new fridge.
At least a fridge will keep your beer cold.
"We like to call it a sporty SUV", so its a Sporty Sport utility vehicle then. 😒
Simon Wood exactly. Love how the new electric SUVs can’t have a tow bar (except Tesla X, well done).
electric cars with heavy batterys arent that sporty. there are pretty mutch drag cars. sporty cars can run fast in cornor track. so there need a big spoiler and reduce the battery weight by -90%
Damn Jay you slammed the crap out of that hood, the German guys facial expression towards our American idol Jay was priceless 🤣
I think they should have sent someone else. Lol hes not a good presenter
@@TheBasher-_- He is engenuer not a TV show presenter! He is also a German and we are dont make stupid jokes!
One of my favorite quotes from Jay is that the last days of an old technology are better than the first days of a new technology. That was true with steam cars vs the first internal combustion engine cars. It is the same with ICE cars vs EVs. But the balance is shifting quickly.
One of The best shows YET! Everything except the rear cargo area was pretty much shown.
I saw this driving down the Las Vegas Strip Tuesday night for CES.
Thanks for a great look forward to sustainable electric automobiles.
I just got my factory delivered EQC on friday. Joy!
Thank you Mr. Leno, because of you I now know what a Chrysler Airflow is👍
Another reason this is my favorite channel.
American:we need cup holder. billy make 2 holes near the seats. Germans: Otto, makes gps guided vibranium cup holder that can massage your back .)))
Personality overload with this guy
What a great chap from Mercedes. Can tell he is a car guy first, and that he can appreciate electric for what it is, like Jay. I love me a good V8, but have to admit, I want a nice small electric car soon one day.
I like the cord plugged into an outlet framed in as the car left the garage.
Mercedes has built a beautiful CX-9!
Naahhh, the AMG Line Version doesn‘t look too bad tbh - our carporn proves that 😜
I love the way German engineers talk.
Finally the maker of the first automobile makes an electric production car.
Love this channel Jay. I dread the day you stop making these
Whats sad is.. his last day will come. Just like the Tonight Show which hit Jay hard.. 😢
Its nice that Mercedes sent an actual engineer over!
23:30 the cameraguy has a huge smile on his face. Looks like he enjoyed Jay punching the throttle.
Amazing. Loved this episode.
This video shows why big brands have problems with electrification.
anyway, the future is autonomous driving, so that was not a big deal with electrification. they just need to power the onboard computer
@@hyy3657 since the service of a electric car is not needed yes, that's a big loss for them. But they need to do this due to the regulations and huge fines that they will face if they as a manufacturer does not lower the total amount of emissions from the sold cars per year. Do not know how they calculate the emissions per manufacturer but in Europe they will get hefty fines.
If they honestly think their first electric can have 200 miles of range they are gonna miss the mark
@@tommihommi1 surely weight has a say in this, right? I mean a fully loaded EQC with four adults and luggage...what maybe 150 miles?
Not at all. They benefit from the decades of everyone else having run EVs, and significant advances in battery technology. Range is a function of start/stop cycles, maximum sustained speed, and terrain. (same as any vehicle)
Evan Kesel Range of a 2008 Roadster had 20 miles more
400 bhp; 150 mostly - 50 watt charging, up to 110 with no infrastructure;
“Top speed of 180km” means that’s under 120mph ... wtf?
no frunk or additional cargo space, no actual self driving software or hardware in place; nothing comparable to a tesla command centre ....
It’s still air cooled for crying out loud
Just a mercedes where they swapped the CE for an E.
Either mercedes goes back to the f*ing drawing board or they might as well hand elon the torch and go with dignity. Just like the e-tron - even that is way better - no match for a Tesla.
It’s 10 years behind.
This is just a prototype and it's awesome
An SS UV . Love it !
The AMG version will have speakers to make that signature rumble sound.I think.
Audi etc are already doing that for their diesels to make them sound better, first fake exhaust tips now fake sound 😔

Integrafreak1 , seriously I almost got run over in a car park by an electric car, the driver thought he was funny, I didn’t.
After 18 years, there definitely will be some gasoline cars left. Maybe new cars will be all electric in 18 years, but do people only drive brand new cars? No. In Finland, the average lifespan of a car is over 20 years, and most of new cars sold will not be electric for many years to come.
Janne Väätäinen
Exactly right. And we all know now the most ecological car is the one you're NOT buying. Specially buying the ridiculously large and, most of the time, useless, gas guzzling Pick up trucks the Americans love so much.
Watch for the next oil embargo - not if but when - to hit us. Oh the tears and regrets.
The production capacity is far less then buyer demand. You are thinking too far ahead. It's not going to change overnight. It will be a gradual but massive change over the next 20 years where in 2040 slight majority 60-70% of road legal vehicles will not be conbustion engine based.
@Susan.Palet9 Screw that. They should be shamed by their inferior new machine. As long BEVs are all built powerful. This base performance BEV is 400hp & 564lb/ft. What base performance ICE SUV is anywhere close to that? Very soon BEV will be easily 600hp and 1000lb/ft. Screw pandering to Emission and Efficiency. BEV are awesome because they are Quick and Strong.
@Susan.Palet9
Probably an enforcement in some international (London) cities and states like California. The smog problems have been reduced dramatically for the last 20 years or so but with the huge number of cars down there, it's still unacceptable.
But remains a big problem : ecofriendly electricity production, mostly done with coal in the USA and China. Or in Atomic reactors.
Where I live, in Québec, Canada we collectively (no, we're NOT communists) invested huge money in ZERO polluting Hydroelectric Dams since the early '60s on many rivers up North and STILL do. We also did a lot of research and investments in wind powered plants in certain isolated areas .
Actually, we actually supply clean power to many New England states and New York.
So for us, buying an EV is a no brainer. Public transportation buses are more and more using biodiesel and hybrid drivetrains but will be full electric in the next 10 years.
@@Neojhun
You are right about the power of EVs. But you do not need to be rude to Susan.Palet9.
She just asked a perfectly good question. Please modify your otherwise correct comment.
Love the exhaust note.... Thought my phone broke and I had become schizophrenic and was (only) hearing voices. Thanks, I'm here all week!
Jay you're the best....you lasted 20 years in entertainment because everyone likes you...unlike the new guys on TV.
Honda design it...?? It looks like you could replace the Mercedes star with the Acura calipers and no one would notice.....
First Chinese designed Chevy, next BMW powered Toyota, now Honda designed Mercedes.
Aerodynamics. There were probably several designs that were tested through a wind tunnel and this design probably had the least drag. Compromise has to be made with EV’s.

Automated ATM
@@mike88g1 It is like saying Sporty Sport Utility Vehicle, Unidentified Unidentified Flying Object, and Automated Automated Teller Machine.
It seems by some comments like Jay Leno never seen a Benz before. “Is that here for a reason?” It is a Mercedes. Every thing on it is there for reason.
Mercedes is known for luxury and being different. I love Mercedes Benz
This guy needs to start taking this serious!
That’s a nice Ford Edge
You are right. If I want a silences car to go from A to B, I would go for a Ford Edge and save some money. When ever ford decide to makes an electric one.
Jay Leno sounds like me at a car dealer asking question to which I already know the question, waiting for an invite to test drive the car... then the awkward chat following during the drive.
Interesting to see that Mercedes chooses Jay Leno's youtube channel to first time expose a new model to the public.
""a sporty SUV" SUV stand for Sport utility vehicle, so its very very sporty!
Take the emblems away and nobody would guess it`s a MB.
Don't kid yourself Leno.
Thanks Jay!
I like it. Have an E400 Hybrid and might be interested in this.
Mercs aren't what they were, they were the best cars in the world without doubt once.
People cant think that this kind of designs are mire appealing than the old SL design!?
I wouldn't say Mercedes in general were the best ....but they did have some models that were best in their particular class. In the past there were cars from Cadillac, Ferrari, and Bentley that topped what Mercedes had to offer. However, Mercedes is a mass-producer that makes a wide range of vehicle types at different price points - whereas brands like Ferrari or Rolls-Royce only build products at the most exclusive level of the market.
Mondo It also just depends on your definition of “the best”. That can mean very different things to different people because people will contribute different factors. To many, including myself, Mercedes really was the best back in the day. It all has to do with perception.
@@modfus Mercedes was always the manufacturer who mixed quality, reliability and luxury in the best way imo
I wonder if any of the visitors get annoyed at Jay making fun of their accents...🤔
I'm German and I don't mind, certainly not when it's good-natured ribbing by a congenial fellow like Jay. This PC stuff is getting out of hand.
@Mirko Meyerhoff, I'm German, speak German at home, grew up in an English-speaking country. My dad never lost his accent, one could cut it with a knife. :)
Bastion is a totally enjoyable spokesperson for MBZ. His accent gives him and the brand credibility, even though so much of their production has moved outside of Germany.
That 3:38 moment when you want to argue, but it's with Jay Leno. :) Funny
I want to know the range when using heat or air.
It all depends on the temp my model 3 can get the range cut in half when it is below 0°F but above freezing the range loss goes way down
Funny to watch the guy squirm as jay made of fun of German stereotypes 😂
The guys seems clueless. Lol Jay "wow Germany sure has made strides and embraced electric technology"
German guy "I dont know"
😂😂😂☁️😂
It is interesting to watch the presentation of this MB prototype to Jay 4 years ago.
The cinematography in these videos has really improved over the years.
Don't know what's "revolutionary" about it - the Model-X (with it's falcon doors) and the Jaguar i-Pace (cab-forward styling) are more "revolutionary" than this. It's just a normal Merc with the IC engine taken out and an electric power train put in.
Rich ppl will buy it they don’t care what anybody on the UA-cam comments has to say.
mike88g1
Intelligent people, rich or poor, ignore totally what is said on UA-cam comments.
I do, and I live very well doing so, doing my own thing. Why should we care?
Especially that most of them comments come from uneducated morons, pure idiots and/or frustrated low lifes !
I think it’s a pretty great car and seems like it’d be a much better deal than the model X. He said price should be similar to GLC43 and that starts at the mid 50’s. So that’s a considerable amount cheaper than the X with an arguably better interior. Also performance should be about the same as the X 75D. Similar range too. I think the front is quite odd, but the rest of the car is beautiful imo.
Fully Charged test drove it before Jay did. Mercedes may be very late to the electric car game but I wish them luck. Thanks.
I really appreciate that Mercedes has sent a real engineer to represent the car instead of some bobble head marking exec that spews the same five trendy catch phrases over and over again. You can tell that he is not embellishing anything about the car, even correcting Jay when he overstates one of its features.
I currently drive a Hybrid (Diesel Electric) E-Class and am completely converted to the way of the electric car, Mercedes did a great job on my hybrid so I'm sure this pure electric will be a brilliant drive - let's hope the longevity of the batteries proves to be OK....only time will tell! Great vid as ever Jay and the team, thanks for bringing us a look at the future! .....I wonder if Elon has anything to fear??
the hybrid works well because of the diesel, not the presence of electric motors
This only has a top speed of 180 km/h?? That's not gonna sell in Germany lol
Well, that's faster than the average Autobahn speed in the unrestricted speed zones, it's a more top-heavy vehicle, and range decreases with speed, so...
Thanks Jay and Bastian. Interesting to read how many comments are negative about this vehicle and this video. I appreciate the variety in the Garage videos and reading the comments is part of the entertainment. The luxury EV market is going to do well since many of the folks that can afford these expensive vehicles don't have to commute very far, and they will have chargers at home and at their business location. 200+ mile range will be adequate and eventually a new battery technology will replace the original batteries and give much longer range.
This one is lovely
It's definitely quieter than his 57 Corvette :-)
look like fridge on wheels
Yep that is the point of a German SUV. It's a transportation appliance for the whole family.
Still no as bad looking as the Model X which looks like a egg is on wheels.
This guy looked surprised at some of the technical info Jay was asking about, you would think everyone knows how crazy leno is about cars and how extensive his knowledge is on the subject.
For 30 years or better Automatic Swinging Doors has used Dynamic Braking in their function. There's an internal spring which closes the door, the DC motors turn producing electricity which is shunted through a series of circuits which slows the closing swing speed, known as sweep and latch.
200 miles on the euro cycle? Not available till 2020?
Revolutionary? Give me a break.
Just another car company forced to play the game. It'll sell well to all those who just want to do the school run, and crucially, it's nicer inside than a tesla and has that three pointed star on the front.
A joke indeed... Just like Audi, with gimmicky "mirrors", the iPace with the engine sound, this doesn't do enough with over 100 years experience in car making. My Model S 70 from 2016 is more advanced than this 2020 concept car....
@@AKA001 Well yes and buying a Tesla makes sense if you live in Los Angeles. I think Mercedes and Audi is playing the we are old card. there are HUGE tax benefits of buying electrics cars in my country. Tax on a mercedes s class is %200 while on a tesla model s its about %15-20. Yet I've never seen a tesla here. Because If the car brakes you need to take it 3000km to the nearest dealer. It maybe better in other places but the basic reason stands.
It doesn't matter how good of a Tesla car is. Tesla Brand isn't as good as Audi or Mercedes, until they become equal people will buy them.
