Took me and my friends about 50 hrs to get the hang of this game and get our first win. Some tips:
    1. every class can appraise. Appraisal is based on your appraisal skill level and perception attribute level. With 0 appraise and 0 perception, you can appraise limited items, like mouldy cheese, and the more you do it the more your skill increases, doing this a few times will gain you one level in appraise; allowing you to appraise different items and appraise more often. If you roomba everything up on the first few floors and appraise it in this feedback loop and then throw it away, you’ll be set, and if you do this all game, any class can reach 100 appraise. The monk class is the only one that plays different, since he starts with 0 appraisal and -1 perception. You need to level up your character, at which point 3 different attribute points will be awarded randomly, based off the class bias (e.g warrior is more likely to get STR, wizard INT, as one of their rolls). Monk needs to wait to get a level in perception, giving them 0 perception so they can start appraising low tier items. This can happen as early as floor 1 or as late as like floor 3-4 depending on if you are full clearing or not. Afterwards they do what everyone else does. Monks appraise just comes online a bit later, but you are trading that for insanely good gains in strength (damage), and constitution (amour and health). You should never equip or use unappraised items, even as monk (monk is very strong and tanky and blocks with torches early on, and uses only his fists all game so you shouldn’t even need to use floor 1 stuff anyways).
    2. A tip is to do all the secret levels (except maybe hell to start) so you get the maximum amount of XP and enter each level at full strength. They will be challenging at first, but are the same every run so you can practice and get good at them. If you are full clearing all the levels, somewhere around the swamp you will become an unstoppable snowball. Once me and my buddies learned to clear gnomish mines (first secret level), which is absolutely mandatory in my opinion, we enter floor 3 of the mines 10 levels higher, 1000 gold richer, with an artifact, and pickaxes and lightning staff for breaking through the levels to access future secret levels, and blasting things to death.
    3. Trading hits with enemies is a death sentence as you will only get through 2-3 enemies doing this. Learn how to kite (needs high movement speed to hit and run), hit enemies around corners, learn to block/hit trade (needs highish AC), attack from a range where you know the enemy will die before reaching you, etc and you’re golden. For melee I personally don’t do the blocking play style often and rely on high movement speed to hit an enemy at max range and then flee out of range before I can be hit back. This is most important for melee though, if you are doing ranged characters this is less important but still extremely useful (e.g wizard should be whacking certain enemies with his polearm to save mana).
#3 can be kind of hard to get the hang of without seeing someone do it first, so don’t sweat. You don’t have to play perfectly to get a win but avoiding a few hits every interaction goes a long way.

I wish I got my friends to play when I started. Played the game for like 200 hours which means any time I get friends to play our skill levels are completely off TnT

I’ve been playing it solo for a few days now and I can’t get past the swamp area. I think on average I die before I even make it to the third level. I’m slowly figuring everything out though. Monk and Conjurer are my favorite classes

Monk is the first class where I started to really get the game. That high block was so nice when you don't really know what you're doing lol
