The Eagles were great around this time but this was the beginning of the Giants 80s era which was known for its stacked defenses. This game was legendary on the Giants side because you had Bill Parcells as the defensive coordinator and Bill Belichick was the linebackers coach and this was Lawrence Taylor's first playoff game inside of his rookie season.
Absolutely amazing what a difference one player (lt) made in the history of this franchise. If he's not drafted in 81 they don't win any super bowls in the 80s. They've never been more in need of a player of that caliber to save this franchise.
The 81 season's playoffs in my opinion were the best playoffs, two absolute classics - 49ers vs Cowboys NFC championship, San Diego vs Miami AFC divisional, the two wild cards were great games, this one and Jets vs Bill's, also Bill's vs Bengals was a great game as well, Giants vs 49ers was really good too.
49ers didn't make the post season for 8 consecutive years leading up to 1981...a worst to first story after being the doormat of the Los Angeles Rams for a decade...

Great playoff game for a great time in the history of the NFL, Wilbert Montgomery ran for over 1,400 yards in 1981 and that was only 4th in the league, just there were great running backs back then and there was more emphasis on the running game back then too.
This was also after years of horrible Jet and Giant teams in the 1970s, culminating with both teams losing 19-17 on the same day, the Giants to the Miracle at the Meadowlands. I went to every Jet game because Giants tickets weren't happening.
Carpenter deserves more respect as a runner. His early years with Oilers he was not utilized as he should have been. Bum should have used Earl and Rob as a 1-2 punch. It could have kept Earl fresh and given him more years. Earl was over used. Rob was the perfect runner to mix with Earl.
Exactly right you are. The Oilers did the opposite of what they should have. After 3 seasons Earl Campbell was already starting to show some wear and tear. Rob Carpenter was a well rounded back who would have been a solid fit.
The Giant fans should hold this team in high esteem. It was the one that brought them back to being THE GIANTS New Yorkers wanted and got for well over a decade. Just 5 years after this the Giants were all the way back hoisting a Lombardi Trophy. Indeed, this was the team that gave the Giants their identity.
i dunno... I give more credit to the NEXT years team for spurning the subsequent success. They went 3-12-1, fired Perkins for what's clearly an anemic offense (even for the era), and promoted Parcells to the HC job. Big blue won this game in spite of the offense, and because Ellard couldn't catch 2 punts and no one could block LT before 1989
@@marz2one You make good points, however...Many of the players from that '81 team were on the '86 squad. They were the nucleus that endured. Remember HC Perkins didn't get fired, he left to coach Alabama, following Bear Bryant. That put serious pressure on the Giants FO. They didn't want to go for a Big Name, so they did the smart move, hire from within. After a rough, but character building and changing '83 the Giants caught the wave and in '84 had a winning season, finished 9-7, 2nd in the Division and even winning a playoff game. '85 the Bears were not going to be beat, but the Giants had a fine season. 1986 the Giants were primed and ready to face their destiny. A 14 -2 season showed everyone that they were as great as we thought they were. To be truthful, the Giants ascended to Championship status in a regular 5 year window, and it held up for another 5 bookend Championships, and a crazy, but wonderful decade of the '80s.

This was the first playoff game for the Giants since the 1963 NFL Championship Game (back when that game was unless division tie-breaker games were needed the week before the ONLY postseason game in the NFL, the Division round was not added until 1967). It was like a typical New York football Sunday back then with only the Jets and Giants games seen in New York, but unlike most instances, these were the ONLY games that week as this was the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
Amazing how poorly the Eagles played in this game, considering they were at home. Usually Veterans Stadium in the playoffs gave the other team problems.
Eagles were already on the way down as it turned out. According to what I remember reading a few years later in The Philadelphia Inquirer, several members of the '81 Eagles were on drugs and it was a front-page story when it ran, I believe during the 1986 season.
Not a bad comeback season for the Giants as they were 4-12 in 1980. Who knew they'd win a Super Bowl just five years after this? Rob Carpenter's last two runs which both resulted in first downs put the game away for the Giants. Summerall & Madden doing the play calling made this an awesome game to watch.
Great to have vids of yesteryear. Watching this you see how LT was great. You see Carpenter if under the right circumstances was a 1200 yard a year type runner. Wilbert Montgomery...was not Payton or a young Earl Campbell but I would rather have him than anyone else. Carmichael was underrated and in today's game he would be awesome. But one thing I realize watching this and remembering the eagles during this time. Coach Vermeil overworked this team in practices. I think he learned and he was perfect in his later tenure with the RAMS. The Eagles literally just needed to relax before this game. They were tight and played like it in the first half. The Giants were relaxed and it showed. Finally, Jaworski was too mechanical and has to throw to carmichael when Taylor was lined up against him. He didn't. He was a streak like Qb who threw too many interceptions annually. But was one of the toughest QB's ever.
This game was Wally Henry's worst nightmare. Its a shame alot of people only remember him from this game because he was a very good return man for the Eagles and was All Pro at one point.
Giants vs Eagles at the Vet in a playoff game from 1981? I can only imagine the amount of fistfights there were in the stands that day, back when you could get away with that shit and it was to be expected when these 2 teams played.
Thanks for including the score in the description. Never saw this game, now it's almost like I don't need to watch since you included the outcome in your description.
This would be the last time the NFL had a 3:00 PM ET kickoff for the late game when both were in cold weather cities (the early game on such days was at Noon ET). The NFL had to get special permission from New York State to move up the Bills-Jets kickoff to Noon ET as the Blue Laws in those days made it so sporting events in New York State could not start before 1:05 PM locally on Sundays (this was changed after a late 1983 spill at Aqueduct in the final race on a Sunday program that had a 1:05 first post causing such to be run in near-darkness forced such at first for horse racing and eventually all sports in New York State). Ironically, Beasely Reece for many years after his playing days would be a sports reporter/anchor for KYW-TV (Channel 3) in Philadelphia considering he was known from his days with the Giants.
@@kengelman1011 You're welcome. Ironically, the Giants needed the Jets to beat the Packers in their regular season finale at Shea the day after the Giants beat the Cowboys just to make the postseason. To that point, that Packers-Jets game was the single biggest game in NYC since the Jets won Super Bowl III 13 years earlier (January 1969).
@@kengelman1011 I'm sure. Of course, the week after this game, the Giants would lose to the eventual Super Bowl champion 49ers handily on a very wet field at Candlestick. The Giants in their first three playoff appearances in the 1980's would win their Wild Card game and then lose in the Divisional round to the eventual Super Bowl Champion before winning the first of their four titles in Super Bowl XXI in January 1987.

It would a few years later (remember seeing it in the Inquirer) be reported that several Eagles players from that 1981 team were on drugs and that was why they suddenly collapsed from 9-2 to 9-6 before beating the Cardinals and losing to the Giants.
From what Ron Jaworski, John Spagnola, and Ron Baker have said, a bunch of the players were at a party doing coke the night before this game. There was a cocaine problem on the 81 Eagles that only the players knew about at the time.
Oh dude, I enjoyed watching him play. Glad he got a couple good years with Giants where they gave him the ball. In Houston, Earl got the carries and Rob blocked. They should have used both and Earl might have lasted longer.
Brent Musburger said this was one of the earliest times in which both of the previous year's Super Bowl teams had been eliminated. In fact, it was the second straight year in which neither defending conference champion made it to the divisional playoff round. In both 1980 and 1981, the defending AFC/Super Bowl champion (Steelers/Raiders) missed the playoffs, while the defending NFC champion (Rams/Eagles) lost in the wild card round. Something similar happened in 1982, with the defending Super Bowl champ (49ers) out of the playoffs, and the defending AFC champ (Bengals) lost in the opening round of the 8-team conference "tournament."
I hated this game I was so depressed I thought the Eagles may go back to the Super Bowl again but it didn't happen hats off to the Giants any given day

In the visitors locker room. The New York Giants were celebrating 🍾 with "California, here we come", "we're going to California", "Going to San Francisco".

Rookie LT being a beast on punt coverage, too. My goodness!
44:27 A very young looking Parcells helping Jaws up on the sideline.
Wow
Great choice, thanks for posting this!
33 carries 161 yds carpenter
The NFC was a tough division to play in back then
Giants vs Eagles at the Vet in a playoff game from 1981? I can only imagine the amount of fistfights there were in the stands that day, back when you could get away with that shit and it was to be expected when these 2 teams played.
Rob Carpenter and the "Bull Elephant Backfield"!!
This is so depressing. I remember this game in on a rainy winter's day. Last year of college at the University of Delaware. Drank a lot as I recall.
On the other hand, its good to see Scott Brunner, a fellow Blue Hen playing.
Why is it depressing? The Giants won. 😉
@@mrufino1 If you can't guess, I can't help you.
As a cowboy fan I did like those eagle and giant uniforms.
LT on punt coverage as a gunner is scary
The best Eagles uniform
78 uniforms
Best Giants ( away) uniforms too.
Yup
Nah
Thanks for including the score in the description. Never saw this game, now it's almost like I don't need to watch since you included the outcome in your description.
Great memories. Thank you.
CBS forgot to mention the Giants needed the Jets to defeat the Packers to get into the playoffs after defeating the Cowboys.
Good intel, Walt. Thanks for posting!
@@WaltGekko yes sir. I was at the Cowboys-Giants game that Saturday. We were chanting "Let's Go Jets!" leaving the stadium.
I loved pat summerall as a broadcaster but he seemed three sheets to the wind at the top of the telecast
I was enjoying the game as I had actually forgotten who won. Then I read your description and saw the Giants won and it spoiled the fun even though Im a Giants fan. If I dont know who won its like a new game :) Remove the score and make it more fun for people
Watching the eagles 81 season highlights brought me here... r.i.p john Facenda
It would a few years later (remember seeing it in the Inquirer) be reported that several Eagles players from that 1981 team were on drugs and that was why they suddenly collapsed from 9-2 to 9-6 before beating the Cardinals and losing to the Giants.
Classic upload. Great job.
There is always special about playoff NFL Football 🏈 especially teams in the same division ➗.
This game was a tribute to tough, smashmouth football by LT, Carsons et.al.
Thank you Wally Henry.
A SCRUB
Wally Henry rumored to have been playing with a hangover.
From what Ron Jaworski, John Spagnola, and Ron Baker have said, a bunch of the players were at a party doing coke the night before this game. There was a cocaine problem on the 81 Eagles that only the players knew about at the time.
@@superbuick Actually it was Wilbert who brought it up to Vermeil.
Y’all probably won’t believe me but Rob Carpenter is actually my old highschool gym teacher. My family is very close to the Carpenters
Oh dude, I enjoyed watching him play. Glad he got a couple good years with Giants where they gave him the ball. In Houston, Earl got the carries and Rob blocked. They should have used both and Earl might have lasted longer.
Could I get an autograph, I know I’ve got a Topps football card here somewhere?
Eagle Flying if you can make i down to my town! I’ll have to ask!
Lucky bastard
I was at the Dallas game at the end of the season before this one. Great game.
1982 was a weird season due to the strike. Some teams never recovered from that during that season.
Wow. 26:50 I haven't seen that bonehead F up since it happened. I was a very pissed off 9 y/o when I saw that live back then.
I hated this game I was so depressed I thought the Eagles may go back to the Super Bowl again but it didn't happen hats off to the Giants any given day
Thank you Ken go Giants!😀
The Giants were on their way back
Thank you very much for uploading this video. What did we do before UA-cam? Go outside?
I remember that little horn band in the end zone 2:04:40 that would play during timeouts and they would play the fight song too. The nfl was different back then a lot of electricity in the air before games and it was just more classy back then. Now....idk
In the visitors locker room. The New York Giants were celebrating 🍾 with "California, here we come", "we're going to California", "Going to San Francisco".
THANK YOU!!!!
Man I love the intros
LT great on special teams in this game!
Commentators:
Pat Summerall & John Madden
Jaworski was #63 He wore #7 on his front and #56 on his back LOL !!! LT was on his back all day every time they played
Young Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells both assistant coaches on the Giant sidelines...
6:28 “Hi: I’m Lawrence. Terrible punt, isn’t it? Well, whatever you do, don’t drop it.”
Hope we have the same result on 1/21/23'...the good old days of ground and pound...Nice shot of the Big Tuna @ 1:42.00...
RIP Ray Perkins
This is real football sports at is it finest
Anyone know what happened on the missing Giants TD before the half?
Carpenter had a couple of more beastly runs, and then Brunner passed to Mullady in the end zone for a TD. Madden predicted the strategy too. :)

My god the vet turf was an even bigger disgrace here..a bunch of 2x8 boards wrapped in carpet Nd stuffed down in the gaps around The bases..home plate and The gaps near the end zone where they rolled back The stands for football.that endzone and a few yards out..where the turf was darker..had NO padding under it. I can't concentrate on watching a play a on that end because I just keep starng at the seams..wow
Wendell Davis in 1993.
After that they should have changed to grass.
At 44.25 Probably the only time Jaws escaped a would be sack by Taylor. God I am enjoying this memory from my childhood
I’m gonna take the risk and go on a wild drive to the channel 6 viewing area because they’re telling me it’s the right and fun thing to do! Lol!😂

Man, painful game to watch at the time. Eagles were 9-2, then fell apart.
What caused them to fall apart?
It is hard to believe that there was a time when the Giants actually beat the Eagles ( in the postseason no less )
Ahhh....stomping on the Eagles. So sweet. So, so sweet.....
Introduced by Don Robertson.
What number is mark wahlberg??
