    Beautiful Catt. and TY for letting us see it in natural light. Putting pot in pot is a great idea. I have no problem dividing but always thought it set back the plant for awhile, at least for me. Happy New Year. 🌺

      Yes, chopping definitely sets a plant back a bit! That's why I only like to cut when they become unruly.

    Good job with that huge nobilior. Is there a difference in fragrance, that you can detect between walkeriana and nobilior?

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  3 роки тому

      Yes, there definitely a difference. The nobilior is pleasant, but smells like a typical Cattleya. The walkeriana is intensely powerful and very strong with anise. It’s my favorite scented orchid!

    Now that I've successfully bloomed C. walkeriana .... I *WANT* a C. nobilior :) that lip is so Beautiful.

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  3 роки тому

      It's one of my favorites! The lip on this one isn't even very nice compared to some of the amaliae! They can be absolutely stunning.

    Hi Steve, I need to consult your opinion. I have been growing a nobilior for six years, and it has been attacked by spidermites multiple times. After several treatment but the spidermite episode recurs from time to time, the last growth I had last year was a stronger one, but the leaf ended up dropping off due also to spidermites. But when I inspected my plants this morning and I found that the nobilior has grown a spike with 4 buds. The spike is growing towards the window glass now. I remember you once mentioned that moving a budding nobilior should be avoided as the buds may blast as a result. I would like to ask until when should I move the plant (the buds are now peanut-size). And a root of it has grown into its neighbor's pot, is it ok to cut a root in order to re-orientate the plant? Many many thanks in advance for your kind advice :)

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  3 роки тому +2

      I’m happy you got some buds! Can you just pull the plant back from the window such that the orientation to the sun remains the same?

    • @BC-fh3jt
      @BC-fh3jt 3 роки тому +1

      @@SVKLOrchids Thx, Steve! I will try, or can I use wire to train the spike to grow a bit back? But I will try to first move it back a bit to see if there is enough space for the spike 😊

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  3 роки тому +2

      @@BC-fh3jt I don’t like to train spikes. I end up snapping them off! lol

    So tipo means typical. Always wondered what it means.

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  3 роки тому

      Well, it’s more like type, which refers to the first color variety described. As you can imagine, it’s the typical or most common wild color type. However, there are a few where the type is a less common variety!

    Does it freeze in Austin every year?

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  3 роки тому

      Yes, we get hard freezes most years. I think we didn't get one two years ago, but that's rare. We'll usually get a few days and nights in the mid to low 20's.
