Not only is $4.6 mil a life changing amount of money, he's also condemned his group to the hardest challenge. It would also be so easy to get swept up in feeling like the stakes are incredibly high during the games, especially since contestants are isolated in this squid game bubble...I found that episode such a hard watch and really felt bad for him :(
I know right :( I had to laugh to myself because with how anxious he was and even his yelp when his cookie broke I was like that's exactly how I would react in every situation

What pissed me off is that he was too naive and immedatlty believed the other guy when he told him he would help him. Like it's so obvious that nobody is gonna be able to help especially in a game like squid game. People are not hating on him, but it was extremely annoying how naive he was.

It makes it even more funny knowing that they got told the more dramatic they make their eliminations, the more chance they get of making the Final Cut
I actually like the parallel between the OG show and reality show when Darius said he would do it again. In the OG show, after the first game when people realized what the stakes were, they were allowed to vote to end the games or continue them. Half voted to stay, half voted to leave, with one odd person out (the old man, secret insider) who voted to end the game. However, once everyone got back to the real world and faced their struggles again, they realized that their situation was life or death for them and decided to go back to the game and try to win. Of course Darius would want to go back! Even with the real stakes of dying, the thought of winning millions of dollars and just taking the chance could convince a lot of people. I just thought that parallel was super interesting.
I totally agree, I feel like this reality show was a bit tone deaf to the purpose of the original show, but at the same time points like this are really interesting to think about. I think it's a testament to how well done the show was in regards to things like this and the idea of human desperation and risk. Though the reality show obviously didn't have the same risk factor to it, the parallel themes are fascinating to see play out.
@Ks-101 That's not what my comment meant. I meant that in the OG show, people didn't care if they died in order to possibly win millions of dollars. So for the reality show, of course people who competed would want to go back for a season 2 like Darius said, even though they had cases of hypothermia and poor diet.
I know this whole show is a fucking mess BUT... It was so fucking entertaining. So many villians popping up, people that we liked getting eliminated and just many other things. Just hope with S2, they learn from their mistakes from S1 to make the experience much better.
I don't think they are interested in learning from their mistakes when they are telling everyone that people are lying and they were completely safe and honest during the show, even knowing there are more than 100 people planning to sue them. But I mean, that's Netflix 😂 they don't give a shit, as long as the money keeps coming
This was good show I was invested and the final 3 all deserved to be there also we got great TV moments from people like TJ I like he's not straight bashing the show like another channel I watched review the show
@@mandyfigueiredoRight there are HORROR stories coming from here, standing for 10 hours straight with no food, using lube from condoms and brittle toothbrushes for basic hygiene, being in the dorms for up to 5 days without filming. It’s not a problem if they knew what they were signing up for, but for the sake of ratings they weren’t told. I think that’s the craziest and worst part of it
I just don’t really like that they played mini games in between the games. They just felt like filler and they could’ve just found other ways to eliminate people like make the dalgona harder
I hate to admit it....but I loved it 😭 They had those people falling out like they actually shot them which was hilarious ...the in-show drama was dramaing... I want another season 😬

As messy at it looks, it was still fun to be a part of. Lol I wouldn't do it again, but I'm glad I did it. But in defense of my friend Spencer, and well everyone else, I will say that we had quarantined alone in hotel rooms for a week prior to starting the games, and we were in the dorms for usually a day in between games, by the time we came to dalgona we were all fully immersed in the "squidverse" and the stakes felt super high right up until the point of elimination. And I am not exaggerating when I say that people were PISSED at him. The first season of this show was definitely a social experiment like no other. - Player Number 357
@@mooma0912 lol, get off your pseudo intelectual high horse. The original drama and the reality show based on it can exist at the same time without it being a moral “failure” of society. There are bigger issues at hand.

tbh i understand why dude was freaking out during the cookie, apparently red light green light took 8 hours so i'd also be stressed if i get eliminated over a cookie
You were kinder to this show than me lol, all great points you discussed though. I think its existence is borderline evil. Especially that they recreated the conditions, no contact, poor living conditions, poor food, all to fight for money they could've simply given them. If execs were allowed to kill people on TV for the drama, they literally would. It's one step away from a real life Hunger Games to me.
i'm sure they wanted to with the red light green light game. they literally didn't wanna bring medics for the people passing out because of hypothermia cause it'd "mess with the continuity" (paraphrase).
“All to fight for money they could’ve simply given them” it’s a game show, not a charity. They all signed up for it knowing what it would entail. It’s a show where we watch 456 people do strange games to win money. It’s not deep. Stop complaining like a toddler. Also it’s not like the contestants were chosen for being poor. They signed up because they wanted to win money, like in every other game show.
This has got the be the definition of “it’s not that deep”. Nobody’s dying, nobody’s getting hurt, and everybody knows exactly what they’re signing up for. It’s no different than Survivor or any other game show where the winner takes home a cash prize.
9:21 - i feel like everyone ignored how the player 299 talked about how the other players from his line were calling him names, whispering at him etc. the show didn't show what they(other line players) were saying but i can only imagine what a bunch of money drove people would say to someone who screwed them over. also, on his "dramatic" reaction, i find it quite funny how it could come from a place from anxiety.
it really bothers me how capitalists co-opted squid game, diluted it into something that was just like any other reality show, but a different coat of paint. i really love the original show still, it holds up imo, but it kinda weirds me out how when it got popular it lost its meaning
I get this point, but I don’t think the original message has been diluted in any way unless it’s children watching. Commentary about the show online is literally all about the message, and what it says about our society
@@ngweso no cuz how did mr beast call it one of his fav shows the year it came out? how were there so many capitalists who loved it?? because they couldnt understand the deeper meaning behind it. not everyone can pick up on the meaning of the show, even tho its v obvious imo. i havent been watching ppls tiktoks or reading tweets abt it or anything tho, im not trying to say the everyone who watched the show was dumb, ofc not, theres a lot of ppl who understand the message of the show and thats great. but i do think the message got lost when the show blew up. i remember ppl crying abt the deaths, and the drama, and the aesthetics, but not the politics. but again im not trying to paint with a broad brush, this is just what it feels like to me.
@@unseenmolee Okay I can see what you mean, and I think algorithms/what different people watch online does play a part in terms of what type of content you see. So maybe my algorithm presented views that are a lot more critical/deeper in their commentary. With that being said tho, I think overall the message of squid game when it boils down to it is actually a simple one; capitalism is bad. this is something we know, the capitalists know, Mr beast knows etc. The creators of squid games all know this, we the viewers watching know how fucked up it is, the message still remains. But at the end of the day whilst still knowing that they choose to still make money over it. In a way it think this even magnifies the message rather than diluting it
I thought the show was stupid the moment I saw it. The whole point of squid games is that people compete for money with the risk of their lives so from an entertainment standpoint, it really didn’t make any sense. Also from a functional standpoint it didn’t make any sense because squid games was a way of saying hey capitalism sucks and this show kinda just seem like it was laughing at it.. I didn’t like that
A lot of these contestants live pay cheque to pay cheque and will live the rest of their lives in debt so in a sense by losing they don’t die but instead lose the chance to live. Forget about the symbolism and politics of the original Squid games because this is more about Adults playing children’s games for 4.56M than it is about all this Capitalism and being politically correct bs. This reality show was meant to be pure entertainment with 1 winner and 455 losers it doesn’t get much deeper than what people are making it to be.
Because this show is in proximity and direct comparison over the original show and it's intention, which is a critic of capitalism. Other reality shows aren't based off of that and for Netflix to create this reality show WHILE having the knowledge about the message the original was trying to convey as a "parody" in a sense, it's tone-deaf and just overall... ridiculous and a bit callous.@@jessecandiver3391

Shut up and grow up. It has nothing to do with the original show apart from its set pieces and basic structure. It’s a reality show. You being disgusted about it proves how immature you are. Also, convenient how the people suing the show are the ones who lost. It’s literally 4.56 MILLION dollars. You expect them to just give that money away easily?
I will never get over being perplexed with the entertainment industry OBSESSION with not reading to room and recreating things that would go against the very thing they were told is bad in the OG movies/shows.
@@joelscottarnold not really mad at them tbh….cause while they DID sign up for the show after hearing how unsafe the set was and how people were gettting injured and health risk it was more on the studio and creator than them. Cause at the end of the day if money is involved no matter what people gonna sign up for a game show.
9:41 I actually think that this is realistic reaction from player 299 despite the amount of money. While yeah some people do need the money really badly I feel like the social preasure also plays part. As an very anixous person I would have honestly reacted the same way too because not only do you lose huge amount of money you also put others at risk of loosing it too witch honestly is terrifying for very very empathic people. As someone who's just as sensitive that would’ve shattered me. I hate conflict. I hate making people upset and hate how everyone is just like "oh he's stupid and overreacting!" When he's CLEARLY STRUGGLING!
I just find sad and funny the irony of the show criticizing capitalism, capitalism taking almost the exact product used in the show to make that criticism to sell to the masses irl and then the masses, knowing the previous criticism and the significance of this type of entertainment, still agreeing to buy their product. Hilarious but at the same time sad that clearly this cycle is never gonna end.
I really miss 2021 because it was when the show was at its speak. It’s so ironic how they made a game show about it. They should make a season 2 and it would be a little nostalgic for me.
I mean this is messed up and that is exists is tone deaf but a lot of what you're describing, poor quality food, condensing hours and days of filming into short episodes that are misleading or a poor representation of what actually happened, is what the vast majority of reality games do. Big Brother had contestants competing in tasks for the weekly shopping budget, and if they did poorly, they just didnt get enough money for food that week, Willam from Drag Race said they were just fed the leftovers after the crew ate which meant sonetimes all they were given which rice and ranch dressing. Shows that have contestant talking heads will have thrm wear the same outfits every days so thry can edit multiple days together to suit their narrative. This is just a few things off the top of my head.
Mai’s reaction to Chad did not feel real AT ALL. Some of the friendships that would suddenly pop up… and some of the dialog, yeah… Still entertaining though.
I liked the show alot though, the fact that it missed the point of the real show, and made it kinda original was actually nice. When everyone thought it was tug of war but it wasnt... I like how they strayed away from using violence and physical strength to win games. On top of that IT WAS SO ENTERTAINING. The suspense and unpredictability was amazing.
Especially no one got hurt and it was fan made. The creator of the show approved UA-camrs recreating it because he saw as people appreciating his show.
I was really confused as to why the contestants were acting so dramatic in the show but after reading articles and seeing the contestants describe the length of the games, it definitely made sense. But I also have trouble sympathizing with the contestants because they did choose to sign up for the show knowing what it entailed and especially after hearing Darius would do it again???
I think they signed up for a competition that gave them a chance to win a lot of money, not to be explored for hours, mistreated, starved, etc. A few participants said that when one person passed out, they received no medical help for more than 30 minutes, the Netflix producers just stood there and watched, and actually when they decided to do something, it was to put that person in a fake casket (just like they do in the show), to show that to the cameras; that person did not signed up for that. A woman that participated recently said she was sexually assaulted by one of the producers of the show, she definitely did not signed up for that. I think even watching the original Squid Game series, it's possible to draw real comparisons with this ridiculous reality show: people that are desperate will do a lot and go through a lot for the smallest chance of getting what they need (in this case, money), I mean, in the show people knew they were going to die and still came back to the games because to them, their lifes were already so shitty and so painful that death was actually worth considering if they had a chance to win, right? I think the biggest problem here is that Netflix knows all of that, they knew people were desperate and hopeful and they took full advantage of that, actually they decided to explore it even more. I feel bad for the people who just expected to go through a few silly tests and got treated like absolutely trash :/
The original Squid Game pointed out that for a lot of people, it really is a life or death situation. When you are deep in poverty and barely struggling to get by, of course you would sign up to participate in the Squid Games even with the knowledge that you may very well die. Even the thought that you may win the cash prize is enough to get someone to sign up. It's all about Netflix exploiting the impoverished for entertainment.
one of the squid game contestants on TikTok mentioned that if your death was super dramatic, then the higher your chance of having your death featured on the Final Cut 😭
Im scrolling thru these longer comments and reading their explanations and everything and then your comment just popped up as this very blunt- short-straight to the point- opinion and for some reason it's sending me😭idk why I thought this would be funny but it is. I enjoyed it as well
Agreed. It’s tripped out that they recreated it for funsies AND even more tripped out that people jumped at the opportunity to participate and be excited to be immersed in the fantasy.
I thought the main purpose of this show was to show how brutal these games were and how they manipulated the vulnerable populations and killed them to clean up society. It wasn’t to make you want to do it for real. But then again, the viewers were like the sicko rich investors who watched this sick game as entertainment so the IRL version proved that in a way. I am not bothering to watch it. Only here for the commentary.
Honestly releasing this show was a huge social experiment to comment on how our world works. We think all of these things are horrible and all say oh squid games is so vile I can’t imagine it happening. But we are up the show and when they made it irl we ate it up again. Truly shows how society is all about consumerism and how we don’t actually care. Very reminiscent of the hunger games where people would tune in to watch yet at the same time call the games cruel.
There are certain tv shows that could be turned into real life adaptations and it can work extremely well, but “Squid Game” in particular as a real life game show does not work at all for a number of reasons. What made the fictional series so climatic and great was the ginormous stakes involved for all of the players, all of them living in massive amounts of debt and having their own individual things/people that they are fighting for, all of them being so desperate that they are willing to kill each other to be the last one standing that wins the money that would change their lives and their families lives, it is incredibly heartbreaking.. And in this reality game show there is nothing at stake for these players, they have absolutely nothing to lose because they aren’t at risk of being killed if they don’t win. All of them are just there to be on television, gain some clout, and possibly win some money but if they don’t they just return to normal happy lives.
Ashley was so ridiculous. "I just tossed Todd out because I did not want to be a part of the team" and then wondered why Mai hated her... it was comically bad. Then 228 and 179 were annoying af too. I enjoyed it, even if I do not think it was a great idea, but some of the people in there were so weird.
I am not watching this damn show BUT I will watch you talk about the damn show. I’m just patiently waiting for the actually SG series to come out with S2. And happy mfing birthday to you Rumi!!! I hope you enjoy your day and have loads of fun!
We really did not need it and we told Netflix it was a bad idea when they propose the game. They clearly did not watch the show and comprehend the message. I refuse to watch it
Actually I watched this with my 5 & 7 y.o kids and they loved it (i skipped the interview part). The fact that we know the eliminated arent dead totally change the tone of the game😂
I completely agree with the comments saying this reality show is tone deaf and goes against everything Squid Game criticized, yes that's true! But the only people that care about the message of the show are the people who watched it (not everyone who watched it, obviously) and people who wrote it, I mean, Netflix only sees the show as a major hit that gave them a lot of money and opportunities to make more, like, Netflix doesn't care that Squid Game criticizes capitalism and how disgusting it is to put people in need in terrible situations for the smallest chance of receiveing what they need, Netflix saw "iconic" tests they could apply in real life, "iconic" uniforms with big numbers on them and the chance to use the product that they own to make even more noise and money for them.
a lot of people just watched the show for the exitement of the games and rooting for the proganist to win lol, the only viewers who care about the message are those who have read some class theories or are already critical of capitalism, which are not a lot at least in the us
@@MENGRANRANRAN I know that, I wasn't talking about those people (specially because I mentioned the comments made in this particular video), and you don't need to read class theories or anything to care about the message of the show 😂 a lot of people around me understood and agreed without any of that, even my 16 year old brother understood it, it's not that hard to be critical of the capitalist system (not everyone is) when you are living in it and can see all of it's flaws, or watch a show and think how heartbreaking it is that people were led to that point because of the way their world worked and how absurd it is that the world actually works like that. I don't know about the people in the US, I don't live there and I'm not planning to, but even there I assume not everyone is blind to all of that, but yk, that's just me
Yeah I mean people can understand the message, but they probably don't really care and Netflix knows it. That's why they dare to milk the series by making a reality tv show that goes against everything Squid Game criticized. They believe even if there's criticism, it won't make a difference and people will still go back to watch when season 2 is out.@@mandyfigueiredo
When I was hearing about the show this week I definitely thought it was tone deaf and I wouldn't watch it, but then my bf put it on with no warning and we binged it lol still tone deaf, but so entertaining and every time things got real he would say "we're the problem" as we pretty much watched people go through it, like you'd think they were actually dying by how stressed out they were. Then a day ago when we watched the ballad of songbird vs snakes in the theater and serjanus or someone makes a speech about just sitting back and spectating the games we just looked at each other and mouthed "we're the problem" Anyway yayy Mai lol
It was exposed some parts are rigged.. the mother and son wasnt to suppose to go on after first game.. they say the mother didn’t make it but they wanted the mother and son combo
I tried to avoid reality tv for so long but I love the original show so was very curious. It's typical reality tv and pretty perverted. It punishes those for being too kind and noticeable then punishes those who didn't impress other enough to the point of faking a friendship. Like the original show, you realize that everyone supposedly is in this for themselves despite a few sacrifices by those who saw others as more worthy. That was very cool.
It was pretty good. I was just sorry to hear that the contestants were mistreated. Netflix probably thought that anyone interested in participating in such an extreme themed game would likely be purists looking to, expecting, or okay with the extreme conditions. Netflix forgot this is real life though and thus, the well merited lawsuits.
I think as long as we never get to the hunger games being broadcasted which I think in the next 100 years is a possibility in some shape or form, if its entertaining, people are gonna watch unfrotunately. Entertainment does not have a morality, just the people creating it.
I also questioned the ethical nature of the show but I’m hoping they combat this by ensuring people read the contracts and disclaimers carefully. They had a medial examination, physically and mentally. They were aware they could leave at any point. They hopefully had medics and mental health professionals on standby all to ensure a social experiment like this is as safe as possible. At the end of the day all it would take to cancel the show is for one mentally unstable person (me for example who has bipolar) to get through the interview process, someone not check my medical history correctly and allow me in. I have a mental breakdown during the experiment and commit suicide when I’m out. Then all the blame will be on the show just because one person got through the medical examination when they were not fit. Look at how much hate Ashley is getting over social media. What if historically she has been fine her whole life but the social media comments push her over the edge. It’s an entertaining show and I found it interesting. I enjoyed it but I’m super aware of the negative impact this can have on players.

I haven't watched it but honestly I'm just uninterested in the whole concept. That being said I don't really enjoy reality shows/competitive prize winning shows so I'm likely not the target audience.
18:00 The contestants in the og did have that vote though and a majority (I think it was) of people still chose to return even after knowing the risk of death.
honestly the show was boring and i really didn’t care about the contestants. i remember when they casting for the show and i thought it was gonna be stupid then.
As a Reality Game Show junkie... I had fun with it! But actually I wish it was toned down more. I didn't like the over-done drama, because there's enough drama in just the games. I also thought some of the gameplay was unfair, but with 456 contestants I get why they had to do some things the way they did.
there is a Russian youtube show called "rat race" which is based on Squid game as well, but the contestants are popular personalities and each of them put an equal amount of money into prize so the winner gets all of it. i think it's a better way to make such reality cuz it's still entertaining but not tone-deaf
The funniest and most ingenious play . was when after an African-American guy won a pass to the next gar, an African-American girl has him eliminated !!
Every time someone was eliminated I died laughing (pun intended). I definitely needed the comedy to lighten the mood. All game shows exploit people’s need for money so I am not against another game show amid hundreds.
it's funny because friendships are being valued so much in the show, yet at the end of the day, only one person is able to succeed. in a game like this, you should be making alliances, not friends.
If they had a problem they could have quit the show. There was an interview with one woman on Inside Edition who said conditions were horrible but she would still sign up for it again if she could.
I think about that sometimes! but the financial stakes are So much higher for this show And survivor has a much much smaller cast, therefore a higher chance that each participant could actually win or even benefit from the exposure
Love this analysis. I have not watched the reality show version but i really resonated with your point about this show being another example of poor people struggle over money for the literal entertainment of others and to make the wealthy wealthier. The thing is, the other examples were set in fiction (OG season and new Hunger Games), but now we're bringing it closer into reality?? I feel like these stories were meant to radicalize people, not bring about a new level of TV dystopia.
I’m ngl i did enjoy the show but after seeing this it did give me perspective cuz this was exactly the thing the OG squid games was critiquing and the fact that all this crazy shit happened like the food and conditions on the low is wild but idk it still have a realistic pov but it was a good show and I just wanna know what really went down

Season 2 would be better with less ghetto contestants
I just don’t really like that they played mini games in between the games. They just felt like filler and they could’ve just found other ways to eliminate people like make the dalgona harder

THEY WOULD!!!! That's a major part of why this freaks me out!!!
Normalizing this Is The Path towards more exploitative entertainment practices.
i'm sure they wanted to with the red light green light game. they literally didn't wanna bring medics for the people passing out because of hypothermia cause it'd "mess with the continuity" (paraphrase).
Lmaooo this is hilarious
literally, I have this same gripe with most game shows
“All to fight for money they could’ve simply given them” it’s a game show, not a charity.

I don't understand why people keep making this point. It's literally no different than any other reality show competing for money.

No surprise that it was a mess 😂
Unless they paid me, I'd just shrug and sit down. There's no way in hell I'd embarrass myself for free lol
the entire thing is so dystopian

I liked the show alot though, the fact that it missed the point of the real show, and made it kinda original was actually nice. When everyone thought it was tug of war but it wasnt...
The unseriousness of the “deaths” had me cackling the whole time! Like it made watching the whole show worth it
one of the squid game contestants on TikTok mentioned that if your death was super dramatic, then the higher your chance of having your death featured on the Final Cut 😭

I saw the notification from Netflix about this show I was like ' No way any of this is real'😭
some of the contestants said that if they pretended to actually 💀 the 💀 is more likely to be shown on the show
The fact that this exists is proof we live in a dystopian timeline.
432, 065, and Ashley were fighting for who can get the most hate
Ashley was so ridiculous. "I just tossed Todd out because I did not want to be a part of the team" and then wondered why Mai hated her... it was comically bad. Then 228 and 179 were annoying af too. I enjoyed it, even if I do not think it was a great idea, but some of the people in there were so weird.

you say we watch and poke fun of people and their need for money but isn't it the whole point of every reality game show, ever?
Not every person needs the money like influencers or TikTokers cuz they are a least rich

Then a day ago when we watched the ballad of songbird vs snakes in the theater and serjanus or someone makes a speech about just sitting back and spectating the games we just looked at each other and mouthed "we're the problem"
Anyway yayy Mai lol
It would be cool if you could interview a few more contestants

I tried to avoid reality tv for so long but I love the original show so was very curious. It's typical reality tv and pretty perverted. It punishes those for being too kind and noticeable then punishes those who didn't impress other enough to the point of faking a friendship. Like the original show, you realize that everyone supposedly is in this for themselves despite a few sacrifices by those who saw others as more worthy. That was very cool.
What I find bad about it is that you don’t see all the same contestants throughout the show, so you’re still learning about the people every episodd
What I find bad about it is that you don’t see all the same contestants throughout the show, so you’re still learning about the people every episode
I’m early! I love your channel!

The funniest and most ingenious play . was when after an African-American guy won a pass to the next gar, an African-American girl has him eliminated !!

it's funny because friendships are being valued so much in the show, yet at the end of the day, only one person is able to succeed. in a game like this, you should be making alliances, not friends.
Idk man the chick who fucked the girl alliance over won!
If they had a problem they could have quit the show. There was an interview with one woman on Inside Edition who said conditions were horrible but she would still sign up for it again if she could.
I mean think about survivor! It could easily be made into a horror show
I think about that sometimes! but the financial stakes are So much higher for this show
And survivor has a much much smaller cast, therefore a higher chance that each participant could actually win or even benefit from the exposure
When are they going to make hunger games: the challenge?
Love this analysis.
I have not watched the reality show version but i really resonated with your point about this show being another example of poor people struggle over money for the literal entertainment of others and to make the wealthy wealthier.
The thing is, the other examples were set in fiction (OG season and new Hunger Games), but now we're bringing it closer into reality??
I feel like these stories were meant to radicalize people, not bring about a new level of TV dystopia.
I mean its 4.6 million dollars i would risk my life still😂
I’m ngl i did enjoy the show but after seeing this it did give me perspective cuz this was exactly the thing the OG squid games was critiquing and the fact that all this crazy shit happened like the food and conditions on the low is wild but idk it still have a realistic pov but it was a good show and I just wanna know what really went down
How they had condoms but no chapstick lmaooo. This sounds like a LARP (live action role play) of the squid games tv show.
I enjoyed it. Ppl are hating for no reason. Can't wait for the next squid game challenge.
There are multiple reasons and you are just ignorant
