SEAT Leon Cupra 300 Drive and Review - A Credible Golf R Alternative for Young Drivers?

  • Today I'm driving a SEAT Leon Cupra. To many, this is just another face for the VW Golf. But, keen finance deals and a peppy engine mean that this is a very tempting alternative to the "R" for younger petrolheads, so is it just as good without the all wheel drive? Let's find out.

The numbness to the steering could be due to a control module setting called 'straight line running' which is common to many VWAG cars. This enables the steering motor to automatically compensate for camber changes, cross winds and torque steer, but in doing so takes away the interactivity most enthusiasts enjoy. I don't know if most VWAG cars with dynamic suspension also have this enabled by default which could explain the correlation James has found, but it wouldn't surprise me. It can be switched off using VCDS and in my opinion is one of the best tweaks this software can do. Quite why their sporty cars don't come from the factory like this is beyond me.

@JayEmm, I _might_ have the answer to your fuel consumption query. When I first heard this, I double-checked the calendar date. So, my 210bhp car will easily do high 20s around town, but only on cruise control will it do a tad better than 34mpg on a run. Just how dare it drive better than me! The reason being that when you wind up the engine speed, and its attendant heat, you need something to happen to help cooling on over-run. The engine will run a fair way at high revs with throttle closed. What happens is that raw fuel (I understand that as neat, rather than a with-air mix) is drip-fed into the combustion chambers without firing it, and this performs the best heat regulation option - obviously, all the electronics are doing their magic too.
It's the main reason that on my R5GTT I can get a lovely, near perfect grey/brown shade, deposit on the exhaust, whereas on the 205GT it remains permanently black and sooty, which grinds my engineering senses to dust! It's probably also the reason why the R5GTT has hot-start issues and needs it carb-cooler to boot. I've come to the conclusion that these days Renault know all there is to know about turbo petrol engines and I doubt much of it is now secret. I have avoided getting a re-map because no-one can seem to answer whether better fuel economy comes because this over-run drip-feed is impacted. That and it reporting itself as a Megane - oh, the shame!

It doesn’t has the GTI engine but the R/S3 engine in combination with the GTI drivetrain. 2. The diff is not electronic, it’s an electronically controlled mechanica LSD. -> unless this is different for UK spec cars than the rest of the world. 3. I bought this car at age 22 and it was extremely expensive to insure all risk (just one insurance company didn’t refuse me) because of the power. I wouldn’t actually recommend this car to young drivers. It’s also just to fast for young drivers (it’s in reality as fast as a stage 2 mk7 GTI dsg, and except the launch it’s faster than the R/S3 because they are awd). Speaking about the lack of awd, in 1st gear you can’t do anything without wheelspin. Also in Cupra mode, the sound from the speakers is very annoying. Traded it in for a Alfa Romeo Giulia which is 10000X more (a driver focused) car for about the same money.

    Jesus,
I thought James was going to say 23k!
    33K! That’s huge money!
Who actually pays these prices? I wouldn’t give 20k for it seriously.

It's the finance deal which will be important to 90% of buyers

Absolutely James I completely agree well for mainstream cars, people want a 1k - 3k deposit and monthly of £350 pcm - £500 regardless of car
I’m trying to get an Elise 220 s at the moment, they aren’t selling as a. They are to expensive b. you need a massive deposit to get a reasonable monthly c. Luxury car tax.
I’m probably going to end up buying cash as I want to keep long term.

Mr Boggy robably because they are end of stock. Making way for the next gen. 30k is cheaper than usual. But you’ve got the best of the last gen. it’ll prob hold its value once it’s gone for good

I wouldn't recommend a young driver to buy a fast hatchback
