Hello everyone! I watched my video recently and I realized this video could use some help! To my defense, I did the whole thing through my phone lens at the time 😂. I would love to remake this video to show a simpler breakdown of everything with easier instruction. Kwikset has changed a few things and I’d love to show the different style of cylinders and even some better tips and tricks. Thank you all for your positive feedback and for patiently watching one of my first videos I’ve ever made. Things have drastically changed in my life since then. We now have a retail lock shop, 3 employees, and 3 mobile vans! Thanks again for watching. Hope you have an awesome day!
Excellent instruction video. Worked like a charm. Bought a used door for a shed project. Came with a Weiss lock and no key. Since I already have Weiss smartkey locks around the house I was able to salvage this used lock and have it join the family. Thanks for saving me 50 bucks.
After watching several others, This is the best smartkey reset video out there! Everything was explained step by step, and the video was very clear to see small details, ,and i got it fix.. THANKS
Worked like a charm!!! There was one change that Weiser did to the little bar with the two springs. Now, there are two little black clips that hold the springs in place over the bar. So, the bar goes in, with the two notches up to fit the tiny springs. Then the two little black clips snap over the springs. I can't believe how easy this was to do with your EXCELLENT instructions!!! No pins were lost in the process! LOL!!!! I also can't believe that, if I was on the outside of a house, with some basic tools (allen wrench set, tiny screwdriver to pop the clips, I could put in any Weiser key and re-key the lock and gain entry in about five minutes?? Really? So much for security.
Thank you good Sir! I bought a new house which had two kwikset digital keypad locks. They both didn't had a working key I have just rekeyed both of them through this video and If had to change those lock it would have costed more than 400 bucks. Thank you once again !
Awesome video! You are right, kwikset has changed a couple things inside the cylinder but your video was still very accurate. My side bar was retained with 2 small black c-clips. I had one lock in my new house that the builder has been dragging their feet on keying so I figured I tried to do it myself. Thanks for this!
Thank you! Easy to understand and follow. I messed up my Weiser lock yesterday by attempting a key change with the supplied tool. Lock became unusable and hopefully i can now bring it back to life.
Been meaning to see how a lock work for ever. Bought a new Weiser Smart key lock and tried to rekey with my other Smart key locks and something got bound up. Watched your video and now I understand it . Thanks great job.
Thank you! I've been struggling to rekey my weiser lock after it jammed when first trying to rekey it. Weiser was less than helpful, but after watching your video and taking apart my log and aligning those little wafers, it worked flawlessly!
Thanks so much for making this! I fouled up a reset and couldn’t get it to reset again. This was super helpful and saved me having to buy a whole new lock just to replace a tumbler.
Programming the smartkey failed on my deadbolt and not the original or the new key worked, your fix took less than 10 minutes including removing the deadbolt from the door and putting it back. Key things to watch out for: I had to push in the pins in order to slide off the housing as you demonstrated, pushing the shuttle back and forth was necessary otherwise the pins wouldn't set properly. Thanks again!!!
Thanks so much. I tried the re-keying package from Weiser first, and the new key got stuck inside, as a result none of the keys (old or new) was working, and I could not lock my door anymore. This video was very helpful and my deadbolt is functional again!
Thank you for posting the video! I needed to do this today and it turned out fine thanks to your detailed explanation. I had discarded the original key from a double sided deadbolt and only programmed one side not realizing I had to do both.
Thank you, I got a replacement Weiser tumbler and accidentally recoded it while converting it from 980 to 985 as per their instructions but I picked it up off the table at the wrong time and it all slid out. Rekeyed it and all is well. Thank you.
Awesome video!! Mine is a Weiser that has a different removal procedure, but essentially the same idea. Bang on with your tips and now is working like a charm. Took probably half hour to do. Thanks again for posting.
Dec 14, 2020. Thank you! You saved me like 40 bucks on a new deadbolt! I made a mistake during re-keying. I never tried this before and actually did it! Thanks so much!
❤️❤️❤️THANK YOU!! Saved me from a locksmith visit and judgy parents who would've lectured about a 40 dollar lock and a trip to a locksmith on top of it 🙄❤️
I had my first in the field reset without a reset tool and had to do this very thing. Lesson Learned: Be sure to turn your key all the way to the left and right when setting the new key.
This is strange. My Quik Set cylinder did not have a removable side bar. The bridge just snapped off. It also had the plastic cover that I removed to check it out. That was a mistake as one spring and bushing got loose and were a little tricky to reinstall. I was able to line up the wafers, reinstall the bridge, and insert my desired key. It wouldn’t turn, so I tried using the smart key tool and that put it in program mode. I don’t know if they changed the design of the cylinder since you made this video, or mine was just missing a part which may explain why it never worked in the first place. But I somehow have it functioning now. I reassembled everything and it works with my new key. Although not quite like your tutorial, it worked. I never would have known where to start without this video. Thanks. As a side note, I just replaced several locks and deadbolts on the house. One lock didn’t work with the program set up. And another one came with no original keys included. Qwik Set sent me a new cylinder for one, and I fixed the original to work in the one with no key. I killed two birds with one stone and no money involved.
Heck, ur procedure won't help on my Kwikset Smart Key. Mine has a brass round knob on both side of the door. Not the dead bolt type. The cylinder betwn the knobs is of sheet metal shrouded w long tail where the half round hole to stick the half round shaft from the other knob side. I.e., u can't use the cradle tool. And all of my other doors are the knobs on both sides of the doors. Any suggestions?
Just did it myself, but had a ball bearing left over from somewhere. In the video at 3:23 one falls out, I’m pretty sure that it goes back directly on top of the other ball bearing, just before you pop the whole thing back into the cradle and attach the larger of the two clips.
I was having trouble doing this and ibthinknk now know why but looking for confirmation. I think my side bar springs are missing and the key won't come out. What do you think? I also have the crafel but wanted to under stand how these work.
Thanks man, I have two cradles in my van, and they as poor quality as these locks. Managed to reset the locks at a clients site without having to replace the cylinders. As a back up we always 2 or 3 spare cylinders in the van, but the finish didn’t match this time.
I know what you mean! This method has worked well in a pinch for me as well. They constantly have issues when you reset them and constantly need resetting. Sad Kwikset had to make a separate tool just to reset them. Kinda says something about the engineering of the product. However I do like the pick resistance of these suckers, they are awesome in that case.
Nice video but what kind of garbage system is this? Mine totally stopped turning. Doing this did nothing. Snapped the key trying to do this. One year, maybe 30 uses and the lock is totally useless. Next time avoid chinese import locks and buy a proper brand that doesn't "forget" how to work.
These locks have all kinds of issues, a lot of times the little tabs on the key pins will bend and completely ruin the lock. The smart key is convenient when it works, and has excellent pick resistance, but does have its draw backs.. sorry to hear your key broke.

It took me longer to watch this video than it did to reset my cylinder. Thank you for this upload!!!

Thank you so much for such detailed instruction on how to rekey a key cylinder.
The best smartkey reset video out there! Everything was explained step by step. Thanks to this man I’m using the key I want with this lock. Thank you!

Thanks for mentioning the cradle. I bought one and had my lock rekeyed in less than 5 minutes.
Thanks my homemade reset tool messed up the lock and neither the old or new key would work ,oops. I got it all straightened out . Very well explained.
Great simple video. Re-keyed two locks in the new house in 15 minutes.
Thank you! Easy to understand and follow. I messed up my Weiser lock yesterday by attempting a key change with the supplied tool. Lock became unusable and hopefully i can now bring it back to life.

Welp, that was the first time I've taken a key cylinder. Thanks, worked out well and I think I know how the mechanism works somewhat...
Thank you so much! This was easy to understand and very well explained :)

This video saved me $70. Thank you.
Thank you for making this video.
The best of several I watched
Awesome video!! Mine is a Weiser that has a different removal procedure, but essentially the same idea. Bang on with your tips and now is working like a charm. Took probably half hour to do. Thanks again for posting.
Thank you! This helped tremendously!
Terrific video! It contains enough details to relay Kwikset smartkey lock on my first attempt.
Très bien expliqué. Bravo monsieur.

You're a genius. I learned something new today! 👍
Perfect instructions, took about 8 minutes to reset my lock!
milka010907 That is amazing news and excellent job! Thank you for viewing 👍
Thank you very much. Great step by step instructions. Worked great Thanks again!👍👍👍
Thanks, rekeyed a lock I thought was trash.
Thank you so much! This was a great video. I’ve watched some others and this one was most helpful.
Great video. It worked. Thank you.

most excellent video!!! thanks much
Gracias a tu video he logrado reparar la cerradura. Había perdido la llave. Gracias

This worked video worked perfect for me to rekey a lock! Thanks for putting this together!

Thank you so much for this video it saved me having to buy a new lock 🔐💯
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Love this video help a lot and very detail explaining the whole process thank you so much!😭❤️
Thanks! This video saved me from having to replace my expensive locks! Did two... both work great now.
Heck, ur procedure won't help on my Kwikset Smart Key. Mine has a brass round knob on both side of the door.

Huge help after my re-key didn’t work and I had no keys and a new deadbolt was 10days away.

My bad, it goes on the other side, opposite to the first bearing that shouldn’t have fallen out.
I was having trouble doing this and ibthinknk now know why but looking for confirmation. I think my side bar springs are missing and the key won't come out. What do you think? I also have the crafel but wanted to under stand how these work.

Thank you!!! Worked perfectly. My lock was a little different, the top bar wasn’t removable. Maybe that’s a newer design.
In need to do another update on the 4 different generations of the smart key. But overall all 4 generations are similar. Thanks for your comment!
I used rekey tool and now bith the old and new keys work. Any idea what I did wrong?
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you
Thanks you saved me yesterday
Outstanding video!
Lloyd Morrison II Thank you very much! Hopefully it worked for you smoothly. If you have any more questions please let me know

Cesar Yanez you’re welcome! Glad I could help
anyone can save money with this knowledge
Thanks!!
Nice!
Those cradles aren't much better. I just learned to sight read until I could get a working key than rekey it.
