One of the things that I really appreciate about Origins is that the solo/coop rules feel much better fleshed out and not as an afterthought as was the case with the first version of DS. I also really appreciate the hybrid tile/game board system as digging through a stack of fiddly tiles for each new room could get old.

Backed this. Legendary Edition. Got it just before Christmas. Haven't opened it. Hoping maybe it will be simple enough for the fam to play on a Saturday or Sunday evening when it's snowing outside or none of the other neighborhood kids are around. Have a non-gamer wife and two young kids (8 and 6) that like games - having cut their teeth on Catacombs of Karak, Quest Kids and Ghost-Fighting Treasure Hunters. Thanks for the review, Rob! Gives me hope that it might just be basic enough for the fam.

Like you, I loved the book/boxes and I played a lot of DS with my group in the day. This game I’ve introduced to some work colleagues for a fortnightly evening session. They’re loving it, and I’m loving being the bad guy. They were very disappointed when I forgot the scenery (which I got when I went all-in first time around). I’m looking forward to playing this through to the end, and it’s playing that motivates me to paint the minis. These are a larger scale than DS and I would add, identical if you wanted some additional minions for HQ… or indeed vice versa.

This is a really fair review. I always enjoyed your previous videos of dungeon saga! Having never played or owned Heroquest this game really peaked my interest as it feels very heroquestish from what I've read from comparisons. I'm hoping this can be my "heroquest" that I can play with kids, and friends for a light, but fun dungeon game!
I really wasn't sure which to get Heroquest or Dungeon Saga Origins.... I ended up choosing Dungeon Saga Origins because I had no nostalgia or connection with heroquest. I liked the way the tiles, and minis looked for Dungeon Saga Origins. I have enjoyed painting these minis so far! I like that it is an entry level dungeon crawl that perhaps a bit more meat that heroquest from what I've read.
I did have the original dungeon saga and an expansion for it. I wanted to love that game so much, but there were a lot of fiddly things that just made it so I played other games instead. I think a lot of the changes they made here make it easier to play and get to the table, and fix a lot of the gripes I had with the original.

It’s basically HeroQuest 2.0 in my opinion with better fighting mechanics and more strategy without over complicating things. It fixed everything that I didn’t love in Dungeon Saga Dwarf Kings Quest such as the time limit, no exploration and fiddly tiles. Home run for Mantic. This is amazing as a family weight dungeon crawl. Very nostalgic classic fantasy feel.

Thx Rob. I really like the new DSO. It is more streamlined and better quality than the original. It also has better co-op/solo rules, and when the app is out of beta, it will be really great.
I still hope that you will have time to follow up on the original Dungeon Saga one day, and show us some of your house rules to make that game better.

How do you stack this up against HeroQuest in terms of ease of play or getting your kids/nieces/nephews interested in playing games like this? Do you like the systems better than HeroQuest? I like that your heroes in this can grow and become more powerful both through loot and the boons like you mention in this video!

The game is definitely designed to play with kids. It is somewhat more complicated than heroquest but still very manageable.
I have been considering this game for a while. Not building minis is very attractive to me .

I have just started playing after getting all the minis painted. You definitely don't need the scenery pack and I haven't bothered to paint this yet. The cardboard tokens are more than adequate for this type of game.

Sorry you paid inflated ebay pricing for the ultimate stuff. It was a good value upgrade during the campaign. The legendary edition is not going to stay available for long so if people are interested they shoukd grab it. The miniature market price is close to kickstarter value. The retail releases are break that box into a core box then expansions. Each box is pretty reasonable i think but it will cost more buying them all seperate.

@seahawk8601 original DS gave characters varying wounded status resilience based on those hearts which I think was cool. Wounded status gone from origins.
The mini s r always good but who needs more fantasy stuff unless your a new player...mantic didn't want to pay m artist this time so for the tiles they got the sone kid to copy n paste tiles n change the colors..very lame n eyesore on the table.. Plus half the amount from the original....
