Re: The Captive Curse, the monster is actually on the cover if you zoom in on the reflection of the necklace’s jewel. The angle suggests that the creature is looking down at the girl holding necklace, about to kidnap her. A very subtle hint at the monster plot.
Great video Carter! I really enjoyed this. I've got a couple small things I'd love to add, if you don't mind! :) SCK: The first cover you showed was indeed the 1st edition of the artwork. I actually have a copy of it and it's the coolest thing! There was another cover style that came in 1999 when STFD released which bore the same design layout as the first version for STFD. In 2000, HeR started working with Mark Tolleshaug to create the cover arts. He created the 2nd version of the SCK cover that you showed in the video back in 2000! From there, he created the cover art for the rest of the games including the Dossiers and The Hardy Boys: Treasure on the Tracks! He also put together the covers for the Double Dare and Triple Threat packaging materials.

Omgg I didn't know you did youtube! I've been watching ur reels on ig for like a year. I got introduced to nancy drew way back in '05 when my mom was playing it on a clunky old as heck computer. Ever since then I was hooked, I started taking my obsession seriously around 2012-2014 and it has only gotten more intense since. During the pandemic I finally decided to find a community of nance fans bc I had never met one irl or even thought that their was a community bc of how no one knew about the games when I would geek about them growing up. It's so chill to find fellow nerds like myself, FIGHT THE POWER!
I love those original game covers where they each had their own color scheme!! This is such a great video, keep doing analysis videos on literally any aspect of Nancy Drew games and I will watch them all. Haha

Love this video and the in depth analysis! Quick clarification - MHM was my first Nancy Drew and I got it for my 10th birthday in November of 2001. I believe I got SCK and STFD for Christmas that year or in early 2002 and the covers has already changed to the second version. I just wanted to throw that tidbit in there! For SCK it looks like the cover changed in 2001 from the OG in 1998. On the Nancy Drew Wiki for STFD it shows the OG cover art and says, “When HER got a new designer for MHM they had him redo the covers for the previous games.”
Can I just say for a minute Abbie was ahead of her time thinking that hauntings would attract customers to their bed-and-breakfast because like this came out like 2003 you know UA-camrs weren’t like seeking out haunted locations to blog about yet

I absolutely agree that the covers have been very consistent throughout the games’ development! Before making this, I honestly was pretty indifferent about the covers, and then once I started talking about my initial reactions to each one, I actually didn’t realize that I had certain covers I loved over others 😂🤷🏻♂️ I was like, whatttt. And it honestly wasn’t as much with the style, because that always looks pretty similar among each one, it was really more of certain features on the art itself that I found confusing or misleading 🤔 But still overall, I do really enjoy them!!! I want a collage like that ND blanket from the HeR Store with all the covers on them 🤩🤩

Re: The Final Scene cover, I always thought it was supposed to be a magician wearing a turban holding a crystal ball (or possibly the flash paper that Nancy uses during the end game challenge). But it makes little sense because none of the suspects is a magician in this game. You could say it’s a nod to Harry Houdini, but he didn’t wear turbans as far as I’m aware. Overall, it’s a great cover, but def doesn’t make you think you’re solving a kidnapping case.
Oh that’s true!! I’ve always thought that the cover could have displayed more of a magic-theme too. It just seems like something that could have been more advertised, like a magic wand 🪄 or a 🎩 or something?? And yesss you’re right, you definitely wouldn’t know about the story-line just based on the cover. It would have been cool if they could have made some kind of classic-ND look, maybe Nancy peeking around a corner and witnessing the kidnapping… but it could be dark so we couldn’t really see the kidnapper. Very interesting to see the old covers for Secrets Can Kill and Stay Tuned For Danger, I didn't know they existed. My favourite cover is Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake. I remember I was very young when I first played the game and the yellow eyes still haunt me. My least favourite would be The Phantom of Venice, which is weird because the game is my one of my favourites. Something about the mask just seems garish to me.

I apologize in advance for this long comment, I just have a lot of thoughts 😅: Am I the only one sensing a correlation between how interesting/well-written a mystery was and the game’s setting? My theory is that most of the games where Nancy goes abroad are not as strong in the mystery plot aspect because they were hoping that the allure of an exotic location would be enough to get us to buy it. I remember how fans on the HER message boards back in the day got so excited for upcoming games simply because “Nancy’s going to ____!!!” And then they were disappointed because the plot wasn’t that strong. But most of the games that are set in the continental US have to rely on a really intriguing mystery to draw us in since they’re not necessarily exciting locations by themselves. Then again, maybe it’s more of an era thing-HER didn’t send Nancy abroad until CUR, so maybe I’m just more partial to the earlier mysteries in general. What do you all think??
I have thought this before too, especially with games like MED. They tried so hard to implement different elements of New Zealand… like “look it’s sheep and you can go underwater and explore… look at the mountains and the caves!!!” It was just so over-the-top that it really watered down why we were there. It’s less of a mystery and more of Nancy just traveling to somewhere exciting. So I definitely see your point, Carolina, and agree! I also think the era does have a factor that plays into it as well, as those early 10 games carry a lot of nostalgia for players. The games where it took place in another location that I always thought did soooo well in terms of storyline were CUR, TRN, SAW!!
Um dude I think that was Jake and that second cover actually that cover actually came out in 2001 because that was when they changed their website and of your what talking about when there is a shadow on every cover it's supposed to be an indicator of someone that you least expect it to be and that's why it's supposed to be a mystery game series
Technically Nancy’s first international game was Blackmoor since it was in England but I really enjoyed in danger by design international travel how we got to go out in Paris and change locations a lot where Blackmoor we are stuck in the Manor and didn’t really get to explore England
